L.A. Times interview with Dexter Holland

The LA Times has a lengthy interview with Dexter Holland of The Offspring.

The piece discusses Holland's hobbies which include three planes, a hot sauce factory and developing BlackBerry software as well as talking about Green Day's American Idiot. Both the Offspring and Green Day hit almost simultaneously a decade ago, so the article suggests that the Offspring need to deliver a "Sgt.Pepper" rebuttal to Green Day's Pet Sounds.

The difference is, love or hate Green Day they changed with each album. They evolved. No one can say Warning sounded like Dookie or any of their other material. Sure it was all Green Day but it was a very different sound than their other work.

Offspring have been attempting to churn out the same album since Smash (or maybe Americana). A few heavy skate songs, some song about someone dying and way too many joke songs. That isn't to say they haven't turned out some good (maybe even great) songs in that time but none of it has seemed to diverse. Thus the likelihood of them releasing something as different and expansive as American Idiot is very slim.

I kind of see where you're coming from, but i disagree.

Splinter had some different stuff then the previous two albums, although one can argue about how "good" they were.

And certainly with the new album, there is a decent step in experimentation, at least by Offspring standards.

Although i'll admit that Green Day in some ways can be more diverse, again with varying success levels.

Eh, I've listened to the new album and I'm just not that into it. There are a few songs that surprise me ("Fix you" though I dislike it, is a huge surprise), but it still seems fairly formula based.
I think the main changes in their other albums is mostly a lack of inspiration, hence they try anything to make it sound different, but it's just blah.

The Offspring changed a lot : they were great and now they suck. The last album is a horrible attempt a pop punk, but they are not good at that. Smash and Ixnay were not "a few heavy skate songs", they were "entire albums of heavy skate songs". Americana had a few of them and had fun poppier songs. Conspiracy and Splinter had NO heavy skate song, and Rise And Fall had one, Hammerhead. But the rest is totally different from the music one can hear on Smash and Ixnay.

in terms of corresponding records, Ignition beats Kerplunk. Ixnay is good but i've always been iffy on it being great.

I hope the words "Green Day" and "Pet Sounds" never appear in the same sentence again. Green Day could never orchestrate an album even 1/100th as brilliant as Pet Sounds. And I don't even mind Green Day that much...

Sounds good to me. I can see the other side on this one anyway, because as I mentioned, bad Offspring is really bad. Green Day's low points are not nealy so low.

i think it's totally pathetic how jealous dexter is about Green Days success..
and i'm with Dante.. Offspring are to bothered about there 'punk' credentials..thats why they write boring stuff these days,
where as green day never ever gave a fuck, and did what they wanted throughout.. thats why there as successful as they are, and thats why every record is completely different..
offspring fuckin blow.. done with there poor green day rip offs on the bag of shite new album..
