Gym Class Heroes frontman arrested at Warped

Gym Class Heroes lead singer Travis McCoy was arrested last night in St. Louis, MO on one charge of third-degree assault. The band was just one song into their Warped Tour set when an audience member called McCoy a "fucking ignorant nigger."

The band's management issued the following statement:

Somebody in the crowd was taunting Travis with racial slurs. Travis invited him onstage with the intent of calling him out in front of the crowd, with absolutely no intention of a physical altercation. When he tried to help him onstage, the guy hit Travis in the knee area (which has been in a brace because of a recent sprain), forcing Travis to defend himself.

At this point, a scuffle broke out. This whole incident is unfortunate. Travis McCoy and Gym Class Heroes are anything but violent. Their message is about racial unity and having a good time. It's amazing that in 2008 there are still people out there that would say such ignorant things.

The band is supporting their 2006 album As Cruel as School Children and their upcoming 2008 full length, The Quilt.

Dude, I am white suburban middle class, and from growing up in that environment, I am fully aware of the level of ignorance and prejudice that exists among my former friends I hung out with in high school and the people in the community. Clearly, my comments were inappropriate given the context of this particular incident, but I stand them from a more general perpective. I grew up in it, and spent years going to the warped tour and seeing it.

I avoid subscribing to stereotypes in which I have no solid frame of personal reference for, but in this case, I certainly do, and will proclaim it. Yep, you are right, 'it's everywhere', but it's also extremely prevalent in white-middle-class-suburban communities, and I have a wealth of personal experience to draw from.

I don't believe that for one second. Ever heard of photoshop? The first photo is blatantly one of the shittiest photoshopped middle fingers I've ever seen. Second of all, when did you see the lead singer WITH the black male picture in the first picture? I think somewhere around never. i have a feeling that word stands out more than most, even among a bunch of noises. plus if the dude was in the front row theres a chance that in a down moment in between songs, or maybe he red lips. If the guys shouted it multiple times, im sure he would have caught one or two.

im sure people tried to say stuff to get him to shut up but they may not have gotten physical with him knowing that if they faught him they would get booted

Anyone notice that the article first says Travis went after the person and hit him in the head with the mic. Then the bands spokesperson says they got in a scuffle and it was self-defense.

I found that funny.

And don't matter what someone says, it doesn't justify assault. It clearly wasn't a threat, and even if it was offensive, he still had no right to hit said fan in the head. Freedom of a speech doesn't mean following it allows people to assault you because they take offense to your opinion.

In any of the videos I've seen of this, that kid who got hit was nowhere near Travis's legs, and it hardly looked like the singer was trying to "pull him onstage". It looked like he was trying to jump off stage and keep kickin the kids ass. He should have just stopped the show and asked the crowd to get the guy out of the crowd, that way all those kids coulda kicked his ass for him and his dumb ass wouldn't be in jail.

Eminem called out the guy and the guy came forward to go at it and Eminem leaned down and smacked the dude and then his boys all got in front and protected him. Eminem sucks. Its been the same pattern for 60 years now.Nanny state do gooders("liberals") want to "Do something" and once something is enshrined in law and/or their is a focused shift in enforcement strategy,it becomes fodder for the goon squad(the right wing douchebag element of society) this way they can blame each other yet symbioticly feed off each other at the same time and the people of the discarded middle and off the fucking chart are left with an increasingly repressive society over shit that was filed under "thats life" a generation ago. The plus side,and Im old enough to have noticed, A LOT LESS overall violence via fighting,the minus...The Man can and does nail everyone for every fucking thing. The cops are more by the book than ever. Its the book thats fucking rotten.

fugazi, minor threat (possibly youth crew), most anarcho punk (debateable how punk those bands would be), folk punk, the list goes on, would also disagree.

oh, and i thought punk was supposed to be about individuality and independence. just because you dont want to fight anyone that bumps into your girlfriend doesnt mean your some free loving hippie.
