I agree to a point but I think showing a lack of concern for endangered animals and the banning of books are of national concern, just in a local context here. But those are concerns for someone like me, those won't necessarily be negative aspects at all for someone that doesn't care about those issues.

I've only read bits and pieces about some of her scandals, but she seems to have quite a few skeletons in her closet for someone who's been in office less than 2 years. But I don't live in Alaska, so I guess I don't really know what her governing style is actually like.

i think everybody is against abortion, liberals are just for giving woman the right to choose and the option to do it legally, safely, and without moral judgement.

and yes, illegal immigration is a major problem, but i haven't heard a great solution from the right. how about making it a bit easier to get a work visa, requiring immigrants to pay taxes, and require that their employers do things more responsibly, pay them fair wages, and provide them with benefits?

You are very wrong. Many people are actually for abortion as if it were an option on a Soda machine- the moral equivilancy is a bit staggering considering that most people think its a child or not ie murder or not.
And since when is it safe just because it is legal? Do some reading- they stopped keeping substantial stats in the later 80s but it is definetly not the safest operation. Scores of women die each year and many more are physically altered in terrible ways. The problem is that we know more than 30 women die from "safe, legal" abortions in the US every year but we will never know how high or accurate the count is

To be fair though, there's plenty of other elective procedures that are far from 'safe'. The fact of the matter with the abortion issue is that people are going to be getting abortions whether it's illegal or not. In my opinion, at that point it ceases to become nearly as much a moral issue so much as a public health issue. Obviously, keeping abortion legal is far safer than the alternative. It's a harm reduction strategy, and it's how our drug policy should be structured as well.

I agree with some of what your saying but you cannot equate this to the drug issue. To reiterate what was said before, if you think its not a child then your case is made but if you disagree than its a civil rights issue being that your disregarding the rights of a unborn child and superseding them with the rights/inconvenience/choice/whathaveyou of the mother. It is a public health issue but that argument does not hold up- if its ethically and civilly wrong than you cannot argue for its legality because women will just have back alley abortions or fly to canada/europe. You have to take stand somewhere
In China they have forced abortions/sterilization and limit family size based on 'health' issues.

I see your point, but I still disagree with it because like you said, I don't subscribe to the 'at conception' viewpoint. I just don't really believe moral/ethical judgments have a place in the issue. I believe it's better public policy to have abortion legal and regulated than to not, moral issues aside.

And "We need more than two crappy choices" is in regard to our two party system that doesn't give people many options. And I'm not a McCain or a Obama supporter, so it makes choosing who to vote for very difficult (and Nader is joke, I'd never vote for him).

I just feel strongly that illegal immigration is a big deal. But I don't want to have to side with the Republicans. So I wish there were more options. I know plenty of liberals that agree we need to find a way to curb illegal immigration. But their party doesn't seem to make a big issue out of it.
(and I knew I was asking for it when threw in the "you're stupid" part, but I really don't see how someone couldn't see why it's a problem, try being an illegal in Mexico, they'd throw you jail and/or kick you out.)

Is it because I'm against ILLEGAL immigration? I have no problem with LEGAL immigration. I have a problem with undocumented people being in my country.
And if you don't think there are crimes being committed by illegal immigrants then you are mistaken (and I by no means think all or even most illegal immigrants are commiting crime, but it only takes a few bad apples to ruin it for the rest).

the problem with immigration is that it's practically impossible to get in legally.

imagine if you walked past a business with a 'hiring' sign in the window. and you walk by it again and again and again, and finally you decide to apply for the job so that you can feed your family and try for a better life. but when you try to go in, there's no door. you look everywhere, but no matter what you do you can't find a legitimate way in. so you break the window to try to get in.

was it illegal to break into the business? yeah, of course. was it wrong? i don't think so. if people were allowed to enter legally, pay taxes, and work towards citizenship, the country would be in a much better place than the current xenophobic fear culture that benefits neither americans nor immigrants.

Yup. Immigration needs to be controlled but the inherent demand for immigrant labor is a huge attraction to illegal immigration and just saying 'don't come' or building a wall will not stop it. Is it illegial? yes, but if you're hungry it doesn't seem morally wrong and you can justify coming over.

We need a system in which people can come legally without the huge waiting lists we have now and can earn citizenship points; like by paying taxes, keeping a job, staying out of trouble, joining American social groups, learning English, keeping their kids out of trouble etc. And since they're documented, it's easier to round up the bad seeds.

This type of system disproportionately benefits the employers in the labor black market. They basically have lawless reign over their labor. I think we need a major change in public opinion on immigration and need to start utilizing better ways of documenting people coming into the country. We need HUMANE immigration reforms.

There's also a book called "Reefer Madness" by the guy who wrote "Fast Food Nation", it's about underground economies. There's sections on marijuana prohibition, pornography, and immigration. I'd definitely recommend it, and the immigration section was very good.

the us is all bound up in the world economy as well as world culture- in fact it's at the very center of both. the only world superpower becoming less and less stable isn't good news for anyone- if the us loses its hegemonic control over the world, a power struggle will inevitably result. if you're looking for the next world war, that's probably what it will be fought over, unless we get turned around.

I listen to political punk bands, and disagree with most of them. The reason it's not a problem is because I'm not a moron. I agree. What pisses me off is the lack of empathy from some people. They do what's best for them and their families just like anyone would do who is trying to survive in our global capitalist economy. If you hoard resources and wealth like we do in the west expect the rest of the world to want in on some of the spoils!
