MxPx plans 80s-themed covers album

MxPx drummer Yuri Ruley recently spoke to ThePunkSite.com about some of the band's upcoming plans. Along with mentioning a new recording session in January, he band is planning on putting the finishing touches on a covers album. While he was unable to divulge exactly who they were covering, he did drop some hints:

I can tell the theme. I know it sounds like a very overdone theme but it's songs that we kind of love from the 80's. Its not necessarily chart topers from the 80's; well some of them are but not all of them. Should be fun.

The band released Secret Weapon in 2007.

At least Mxpx and New Found Glory are somewhat respectable bands. Mxpx a little more. They never got too huge during the blink 182 early millenium pop punk craze like everyone else did. Who like good charlotte?

I'm a sucker for "Melt With You" by Modern English. I love that song so much (guilty pleasure I guess) that I can tolerate just about any of the covers by bands I tend to hate.

i actually think its a good move.

covers albums are essentially for super-fans.

anybody that's a super-fan of mxpx probably doesn't give a shit about their new material

therefore superfans get something they might give a shit about.

It's possible, but we both know they mean "new wave" 80's music. Plus, I'm not sure I wanna hear pop-punk versions of hardcore punk. PLUS, I don't see a Christian band covering Minor Threat (a not so Christian band) likely.
