Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) talks to Graphic Novel Reporter

Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance recently sat down with The Graphic Novel Reporter to talk about his popular comic book, The Umbrella Academy, and his even more popular band. The comic itself picked up an Eisner Award last year, which Way describes as "better than a Grammy."

Way discusses his involvement with the forthcoming film Watchmen and why they covered Bob Dylan for the soundtrack:

For those that aren't aware, Bob Dylan plays a huge part in Alan Moore's Watchmen. It's not just Dylan; there are all kinds of quotes of lyrics, from Nat King Cole to Jimi Hendrix. There is all kinds of music in there, but Dylan is one of the most important artists that Alan Moore quotes in that series. So Zack wanted to bookend the film by having it open with a Dylan song and end with a Dylan song, and he wanted those feelings to be very different. So he wanted a modern band to cover a second Dylan song that he could use at the end of the film.

if there was a gaslight anthem comic, i bet they'd team up with slam bradley and the (original will eisner, non-frank miller) spirit, and a bunch of other hard-boiled detective type dudes, kicking down doors all LA Confidential style.

it's alright. if you liked hellboy, it's somewhere along the lines of that. but more "sisters and brothers fighting amongst each other like the writer watched the royal tenenbaums too many times" kinda bickering going on. some of the ideas/character designs are pretty cool though, and the artwork is reminiscent of mike mignola's, very blocky high-contrast kinda stuff.

Yeah, I said I got laid off (which is true) and I can't afford the $50 increase (not totally true), they said they couldn't do anything, I said I would have to cancel then, then they said "how's $99 sound" and I said "good."

I don't like My Chemical Romance at all, and for obvious reasons. I haven't had a chance to read the Umbrella Academy, but when I see this dude talk about comics I respect him alot more. Like a notch one scenario.

Since Watchmen comes out soon, I have to ask if this is going to be worth it? Like Dark Knight hype? II just watched the trailer and was wondering is that batman in the trailer?

The hype is nowhere near Dark Knight. I think it might be ok, but it can't come close to The Dark Knight hype, I've never seen that much hype around a movie that actually lived up to it.

No, that is Nite-Owl. In the comic, he was a parody/tribute/similar to the golden age Blue Beetle, who had a bunch of gadgets that were beetle-themed.

True that. I think Stan Lee is a better writer than Grant Morrison in the same way everyone on this site thinks The Ramones are better than My Chemical Romance.

Cant stand MCR. I didnt want to read umbrella academy either. I tried to. Its not bad but not my cup of tea either. To be fair Im also not part of the group that goes crazy for Grant Morrison. I thought his New X Men run was good at first,then turned to crap with all that xorn/dr sublime stuff.

kinda surprised someone in the comic book world would participate in this movie, seeing as alan moore is beyond furious that its coming out.

that being said, a friend of mine saw the first 15 minutes at the nyc comicon.. and said it was fantastic.. and for those who aren't aware.. its pretty much universally held as one of the best stories not only in comic book history, but is consistently ranked as one of the top 100 novels of the last century

I have my doubts about how good this movie will be. Watchmen's bound to be a tough thing to adapt, and I don't know if Zack Snyder is really the caliber of director to undertake it. I thought 300 was enjoyable (albeit poorly acted), but I wouldn't call him a "visionary" as the ads do.

I hate the term graphic novel, except when it means a comic story that was not first published in serialized issues. People who don't know anything about comics and poeticize Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman and couldn't name any other writers say it all the time. Basically, anyone who refers to themselves as a "graphic novel fan" is probably a douchebag.

As a comic book fan, I agree. I hate the hipster fucks/typical grad student types who say it just to sound cool.
