Beastie Boys finishing up new album

EW has a status update from the Beastie Boys on their new album. The album is their eighth and the magazine spoke to Adam "MCA" Yauch:

It's a pretty weird record. [The album will feature] a lot of rhyming and playing and sampling-all combined. We still have a good time working together. It's fun to be able to reinvent yourself every time

The record is headed for a Summer or Fall 2009 release. The group recently released a remastered and expanded version of their 1989 classic, Paul's Boutique.

"U Don't Know." What a great beat.

Jay Z is mostly filler, though. Super talented, but way too concentrated on busting out hit singles to make very good records. "Reasonable Doubt" was awesome, but everything after it is half garbage because of the pop singles. If "Blue Print" had been all street style, classy hip hop, it would be his best.

Agreed, they are not good. Some of their old stuff is a bit catchy but it still gets old fast. I find them grating on the ears.

I honestly dont think that rap would have taken off in the white community if not for the Beasties. They opened the gated community doors for groups like Run DMC and still managed to be one of the better acts during the time.

Definitely. Also, their attitude was pretty revolutionary in their day. Before them, rapping about drugs, sex, and violence was not done with the same irreverent pride. They really opened the doors for groups like NWA as much as Schooly D and Ice T.

It was a product of the time. There were worse NY Hardcore bands. While the record would have been completely forgettable if it wasn't made by these guys/and kate... it's not that bad.

I appreciate the band's talents, but the last 2 albums were pretty poor. I'm afraid of the downward spiral of my once-favorite group.

I'm with you on that. The mix-up is just background noise. I always liked their instrumental stuff that was mixed in with the punk and rap like on Check Your Head and Ill Com. Pauls Boutique was great and I still like to listen to Hello Nasty once in a while. I was not a fan of the 5 Boroughs at all. I lke the remix to Check it out but that's it. I hope this is not another one like that album.

I've yet to be really disappointed by these guys, but they really need to pick up the pace between albums; they're not getting any younger and no body wants to see someone in their mid 50s try and be "ill"
