MTV plans to show music videos... at 3am

MTV is currently launching a program called AMTV which will feature music videos between 3am and 9am. The network, which began in primordial times in this fashion, later changed their focus to reality TV and are currently best known for shows like The Hills, My Super Sweet 16, A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila, and Paris Hilton's My New BFF.

According to the NY Times report, the network is also bringing back "Unplugged," its series of acoustic performances by artists. Critics of MTV say that its music brand is all but irrelevant now, since countless music videos and songs are only a click away on YouTube and other Web sites. The network canceled "TRL," its long-running video countdown, last fall after years of sagging ratings.

i haven't watched mtv since 1994. i just took a stab at what i thought were two current "artists" that were up their alley.

I understand all of the money is in reality television now, but I always wonder if MTV brought back a few more DAY TIME music video shows, if bands would start to sell more albums again. It seems like everyone focused on the downloading killing music rather than music not being on TV anymore. I've never had any cool premium cable channels so I've only seen FUSE like one time.

If major labels are complaining so much about losses over the years, why don't they try to use their power to get MTV or at least MTV2 to try and bring back a countdown or something.

well, things like MTV are a double edged sword, because even though it might encourage SOME people to buy the album, the whole idea of MTV and MTV-like channels (like Fuse) are still SINGLE-BASED. so kids (i'm assuming it's the 12-19 year old set that still primarily watches shit like MTV) will know of the hit single, and probably download it from somewhere (not even going into whether or not they do it legally), but not buy the album.

i'd support MTV if they brought back more things like the 120 Minutes or Unplugged live performances, which focus more on the artist/band's entire catalog rather than just the single.

actually, if MTV brought back 120 minutes supplemented with say, three 15-minute performances by three different bands with videos in between, i'd totally back something like that.

Sure it would be cool if there were shows that celebrated a bands whole catalog, unfortunately it is "music television" and they can only really play videos that the bands actually make which, more than not, are the singles. As for unplugged, they could just rename it "frontmen that went acoustic that are/were in great punk bands", that would be tits indeed.

Yeah, especially with iTunes making huge sales on "singles" alone, I guess it would still kind of be that market promoting the "hits" rather than everything else.

I miss back when you had to buy the whole album instead of being able to download the one single you hear. There are still a lot of people who do that, but I guess it pales in comparison to the amount of mainstream people who just buy one song from iTunes.

If MTV really wants to get any sort of real tv audience again, bring back 120 Minutes!!! I would watch that shit every sunday night when I got home from work after smoking a bowl and cracking a beer. My roommates and I would always be stoked on who was guest hosting, and who was performing live.

Miss that show alot. Matt Pinfield and Lewis Largent era's were the best.

It's night quite the old show, but VH1 Classic has its own 120 Minutes now that's all videos and no live performances. It's not on a whole lot, but when it has been I've seen a lot of different stuff on there, including The Jam, Frank Black, Morrissey, New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen... it's really good.

I remember my dad, who's kind of a metalhead, watching it MTV a lot in the late 80's and early 90's and annoying the hell out of my mom who just likes to listen to pop music. Ten years later and the roles are reversed: he can't stand it and she would listen to it all the time.

Was Undergrads a MTV show? I think it was really good and it's a shame that they cancelled it after only one season, especially since there's no real conclusion at the end of the last episode.
