The Riverboat Gamblers, Mariachi El Bronx and Of Montreal are some of the artists confirmed for an upcoming Spin-curated tribute to Prince. Titled Purplish Rain, the record coincides with the 25th anniversary of Prince's Purple Rain and will be available as a free download to Spin subscribers. It's due out June 23, 2009.

Season 7 was the last above average one.

I stopped forever when the "Tommacco" episode aired. I remember it vividly, it like FREAKED me out. I was like "Why are none of the characters acting like themselves?! WHY ARE ANIMALS TALKING!! Homer fell down a flight of stairs obnoxiously FIVE times!! Horrifically breaking the 'In-Threes' law of comedy!" I felt like unclean or something.

I watched that episode last night. It's not bad, but yeah the tractor bit isn't funny. I feel like, especially in the newer episodes they increasingly rely on cartoon violence, comic-book-esque cheesy puns, pop-culture flavors of the week. It's not funny.

i think 7 is excellent, actually. 8 is uneven but has a few really good ones. after that it's basically unwatchable. i also remember seeing the tommacco episode after all the OMG SO FUNNY hype and it boggled my mind that people could watch that and actually think it was good.

My cousin, who back in the day was kinda like my fellow Simpsons enthusiast, lasted a few episodes longer than I did, and he said there's an episode where Homer encounters "Singing gnome jockeys". I almost thought he was lying, then years later I caught some of it, and almost wanted to cry at how stupid it was.

I think you misunderstand that rule. Have you ever seen the Mt Everest sketch on Mr Show? When he falls into the thimbles, it's hilarious. Then he does it again and it's a little dumb... he does it again, and the joke should be dead. Then he keeps doing it, and it alternates in newly established peaks and valleys of hilarity and irritation.

Every now and then someone'll go "Hey, you should've seen the Simpsons the other night, it was actually almost as good as the early years", and I know for a fact they are wrong. I don't even have to see it.

The movie was actually pretty decent though. I got dragged to it, and ended up liking it. Then I found out later on that it was written by a brain trust of many of the old writers. Then it made more sense.

I think later seasons' quality varies greatly per episode. Max Power is one of my favorite episodes.

...And seasons 7-10 are way better than 1 and 2.

Season 1 was admittedly pretty bad except for a few. But no way man. Season 2 is probably my favorite. So many classics.

Season 2 had "Bart The Daredevil" if I recall, which had, at that point, the funniest thing I'd EVER seen. When Homer falls all the way down the gorge on the skateboard, then is put in an ambulance, then the ambulance crashes into a tree like 5 feet in front of it "off-camera" and Homer falls out of the back and right back off the cliff.

I think I broke my VCR rewinding that back then.

oh my god. I can't even begin to tell you how much I laughed when I saw that. One fish, two fish, blowfish(something like that) is still for some reason my favorite. As that article you posted said, the story lines were just so much more back then. Reading that thing made me really miss them. I know they are cartoons, but damn, I miss them.

i don't remember which season it was, but that goddamn kid rock spring break episode was the nail in the coffin for me.

i'd say the best run of the entire series was season 3 til about season 7. my favorite episode of all time was homie the clown, the one where homer goes to clown college. and even that one was on the tail end of the decent run.

This past season they have jumped back on target.........and there were a few episodes in the past 6 years that rank up there with the best (the perfectly timed episode bagging on post-9/11 "patriotism" was comic genius.) Sure, there have been plenty of duds....but there were a few gems too. Still better than 99% of the crap out there. It's like Family guy- some of the stuff is laugh out loud funny, some of the political satire is sharp and hilarious....while other stuff is just "swing & miss" stupid...but thankfully the good outweigh the bad by quite a bit.

I think seasons 3 to 8 are gold, and even bits of 9. 10 through like, uh, 16 were just horrible, and some of the most recent ones have been mediocre, though others are just terrible.

The movie was enjoyable enough though.

Anyone else play this Simpsons game? One of the few games I never beat for my SNES. So fucking hard. I felt like games back then were harder than the ones of today.

Yeah. That game was awesome but hard. Maggie's temple was nearly impossible.

Nope. So close, but I would die immediately on the Maggie round. I should reaquire that game. I remember a map being published in Nintendo Power for that round that told you which bricks to jump on, but I never used it.

Agreed. Seth MacFarlane can sometimes build funny, short sequences, but they should be youtube videos, not a primetime show, half-hour show.

Family Guy is such a strange show. I technically hate it, but some side splitting shit has popped up occasionally on there. When I've been forced to watch it, I usually cringe, cringe, cringe, laugh til my face hurts, then right back to cringe again.

Yeah it's really trendy to hate Family Guy.....and the Simpsons for that matter. But the fact remains that both shows are consistently funny and entertaining....at least far more so than anything else on television. Get your own ideas kids.....don't hate something just because you're afraid to admit you like it.

Did you not see how I own the first 7 seasons of The Simpsons? And how much I agreed with the website posted above about how great the Simpsons used to be? How I owned a fucking game? The Simpsons had story. It had emotion. It had smart humor. They didn't have comedy that was "oh yeah...it kinda reminds of a time when this happened" then a random 5 second clip played. I don't like Family Guy. It lacks any sense of story.

Don't be such a ignorant dick. If someone doesn't like something, then they don't like something. If they are saying it just to sound cool, then that sucks for them. I'm not one of those though.

funny that they announce it a couple weeks in advance, since that gives him plenty of time to start suing everyone involved. and don't think for a second that he won't.

this does sound pretty cool as prince is actually pretty goddamned incredible and i like some of the bands listed on here
