don't make a mix. don't do it if you don't know how she feels. seriously. do not do it.

that said, about 45 mins to an hour is good. resist the temptation to fill all 80 minutes or whatever. sometimes less is more

Strongly disagree. I've been making mixes for ever. There is an absolute art to it, down to how you present it. Lots of people suck at it. If you do it right, you fight with yourself over the end being cut off and you wanting to put one last amazing song on there. Having to decide what to leave off is the hardest part.

well, as long as we've been privy to music, anyway. i think that's why we're all here. and trust me, i've made some goddamned epic mixes. mixes that are lloyd dobler boombox over head outside girl's house worthy. the intention, composition, lulls and crescendos are always there for me. whether they work or not is another story.

the last mix i made, well.......didn't work out so well. but i'll post the tracklist at some point if i can find it. it was documented on the org about a year ago. there was even a mini-meme involving shook ones that even sprang out of it, much to my chagrin. anyway....yeah....

I hear you, I just know that at the end of a good mix, your workspace looks like a fucking trainwreck detonated a bomb in whatever room you were preparing it. It's a labor of love. If you aren't feeling it, the end result will suck. There have been epic ones I didn't want to part with. It's a bit different now that's it's all digital, tapes had starts, stops and sides.

i suppose. but the fact that he made note to say "making a mix for a girl" as opposed to "making a mix for a friend" makes me think something more's going on there. and if this is just some girl he sees in class or has hung out with a few times and just has a crush on or something, the mix is a potential landmine.

this was my mix to shooks chick last year. long story short, we worked together, she looked like kaylee from firefly if she was 5'1, she listened to hip-hop and knew next to nothing about guitar music, was curious about what i listened to, and i freaked out because a cute girl was mildly interested in me. this is what happened:

i think we .org'ers, actually music lovers in general tend to put too much emphasis on mixtapes. we can't always verbalize our emotions, so being music lovers we tend to let the music we love speak for us in ways more eloquent than we could ever hope to do.

i think "normal" folks tend to go "oh. hunh. this is a cool song. that's a cool song. thanks." but for us, it's like a little piece of us we're giving to somebody.

I usually shoot for twelve or 14 on a cd most people don't have the patience to sit through much more no matter how awesome it is, I haven't been able to dub tapes for a few years now.
