Sub Pop to bring catalogue to Rock Band

Sub Pop Records recently spoke to Rolling Stone about their plans to bring much of their catalogue to Rock Band 2.

Sub Pop A&R executive Tony Kiewel says that the label is looking at converting its entire catalog, which includes early Nirvana, the Postal Service, Sunny Day Real Estate, Pissed Jeans, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Seaweed, The Shins and countless others. Kiewel concludes by noting that he sees Rock Band 2 as " a 'release' as far as I'm concerned. This'll be another format alongside vinyl and CD."

So you would pay full price, but would yu get a free download to accompany your rock band tracks? I am not paying for a format that i cant listen to outside of my tv.

It's easy to slam this move, since all these guitar games are declining in sales like crazy and are running out of time..but..

You can pay a 14 year old 5 bucks per hour to do this and he'll be able to do around a 100 songs per week. Apart from the few hundred bucks it costs to be a third party publisher -- That's 2 bucks per song in expenses.

To format them for Rock Band? It takes experienced programmers several days per song.

No, as I said,. A kid can do 20 songs in a day.
I did 5 songs in 3 hours while learning the ropes. Read the article and take a look at what you said, do you really think Sub Pop would do their ENTIRE CATALOUGE if it took days per song?

The new system is all via midi and it's very, very simplified and easy, you can even do it live with a keyboard/controller and auto quantize it to decent results.

Yeah but, as has been proven by games like this with user submitted content (frets on fire, custom guitar hero/RB songs)... People are TERRIBLE at mapping out songs.

You have to have some musical skill to do it convincingly.

Aside from this article, everything I've heard, including people who worked on Guitar Hero, has been that it's a pretty complicated process and is not quick. So days might be off, but this multiple songs in a day doesn't seem realistic, esp since it seems 3rd party programmers are getting a few hundred bucks a track.

The fucked up part is that you can only get 100% on Nirvana songs by smashing the bass into your face or by totaling the drum set at the end.
