The Flipsides flip out

The Flipsides have finished recording their debut full-length for Pink & Black/Fat Wreck Chords. They just got back to playing live in April after taking a few months off to record the album. The band also recorded a brand-new tune for Adeline Records' "Every Dog Will Have It's Day" Compilation set for June 18th release, and yet another new one for a Truepunk.com comp, set for release in August 2002. On the End Records/Truepunk.com comp. "Empty Hearts, Broken Bottles" there are unreleased (non-live) tracks from: The Flipsides, Arthur (MxPx +1), Slowride (ex member-Rev. Horton Heat, and ex member-Queers), Forty Winks, Darlington, The Gadjits, Dead Sexy (ex member-Saturday Supercade), Showoff, Armstrong (ex-Hagish and current member of GWAR), Red Animal War, Travoltas, Consumed, Lucky 7, The Charismatics, Audiocrush (featuring ex-members of Good Riddance, and Fury 66), The Gamits, The Line, and the Adderallics.

The Adeline Records comp. "Every Dog Will Have It's Day" there are unreleased (not pawn off live recordings, non-live)tracks from: The Flipsides, Green Day, The Influents, GC5, Common Rider, One Time Angels, The Flipsides, Thumbs, Plus Ones, Timmy Goes Boom, Fetish, The Pattern, Fleshies, The Crush, Vena Cava, Enemy You, Agent 51, East Bay Chasers, and The Frisk.

theres something about fat wreck that i dont understand. what is the advantage of having three different labels? maybe someone else has something to do with signing the bands, but thier still under fat and i dont understand. im not criticising, just curious. it seems almost counter-productive to have an all female-band label. it separates bands on a sexual basis, it just doesn't seem that cool to me. i think it would be better for all bands from honest dons and pink and black just to be under the fat wreck banner. although, im speaking out of my ass and do not know the logistics for fat having different labels, im just curious why. you would think it would be beneficial for fat wreck to do something like that. i hear a lot of people talk about a lot of fat bands sounding the same, i think merging all the bands from their subsidiaries would help quiet th

Seperating the labels is a result of different people wanting to do different things. Mike does Fat and focuses more pop oriented stuff to Don's, Erin does Pink&Black. Taxes and paperwork are another reason. Wouldn't it be nice to put out the bands you like but don't "quite fit" your label or sell as many cds, then be able to write it off your taxes as a loss? I think so.

I doubt its a tax thing... but I don't know for sure... This is from a Punkbands interview: PB: Honest Don's and Pink & Black are also under the Fat umbrella. How did they both form and who are they run by? How do the goals of the two sub-labels differ from that of Fat Wreck Chords, if they do? Erin: Honest Don's was started so we could sign bands that didn't quite fit on Fat, bands that were more poppy or not really that punk. Mike: I always wanted Fat to be a punk rock label and nothing more. Erin: Pink and Black was started for girl bands. I'm trying to build a label that supports female rock bands in a way that the mainstream music industry doesn't. Both labels are run by Mike and myself, same as FAT.
