Hold Steady's Craig Finn and Letterman writer to adapt Chuck Klosterman book

Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn is co-writing a script for a film adaptation of Chuck Klosterman's seminal first work Fargo Rock City along with Tom Ruprecht, a writer for the Late Show With David Letterman. The book is a collection of essays about Klosterman's love of metal while growing up in North Dakota. In a comment to THR Ruprecht downplayed the musical aspects somewhat

Heavy metal is kind of a common bond among a group of friends... It's the language they speak. But this will also be a universal story of dorky kids trying to be cool.

Klosterman's new book Eating the Dinosaur was released this month. The Hold Steady most recently released their live CD/DVD combo, A Positive Rage in April.

I've always been hesitant to pick any of Klosterman's books, although I generally liked his stuff in SPIN and the occasional article in ESPN the Magazine or on Page 2 of ESPN.

Are any of his books worth picking up? I fear he may get a tad wordy, which would lead to getting through a lot of rambling.

killing yourself to live is his best work.

downtown owl is a good effort at fiction.

just started reading his latest, eating the dinosaur.

sex drugs and cocoa puffs, fargo rock city, and IV are all good too.

he argues why it is impossible to interview someone who interviews people for a living.

He does get wordy, but it's literally always interesting, so you end up not caring at all that he talked way too much about one subject.

Killing Yourself to Live is definitely the place to start, with Fargo Rock City a close second.

It's got some of their worst songs ever (Can't Stop Partying) but on the whole, it's a lot better than Make Believe or The Red Album. Put Me Back Together is a GREAT song.

Being a Fargo resident, I've heard from multiple sources that Klosterman is a d-bag and remember a few years back he did some reviews for the local newspaper and they were pretty awful for his standards.

I don't like Klosterman's writing. He just seems like a Stephen Chbosky rip off. His whole schtik is over analyzing pop culture. I believe he grew up in Wyndmere if I'm not mistaken. I'm too lazy to wiki that. To me he comes off as a d-bag, though I've never met him. A lot of people say the same thing. Though, I also know many people who love his works. I think of him as the quintessential hipster writer, like if you were to parody how a hipster would write, it would be him. He used to write for this thing in the Fargo Forum called "React" which was the Forum's sad attempt at trying to make an "alternative newspaper" similar to that of the High Plains Reader. I think there are so many better writers out there right now.

Big Klosterman fan. I really enjoyed this book. I though Downtown Owl was a little meh though. Eating the Dinosaur's first chapter is boring, but the next few are good...that's as far as I've gotten.
