The Los Angeles area, home to countless labels including Epitaph Records and Vagrant Records and bands like Bad Religion and Social Distortion, is apparently running into problems with the city's lack of support for underground music. According to an editorial written by Danny Dismal for City of Devils, over the last few months, the Knitting Factory has closed, the Black Castle has announced it is closing, the Relax Bar has reduced its schedule to just Saturday nights, Martin DePedro's warehouse venue was shut down, and even Metal Mondays is taking time off.

yeah, mentioning Epitaph and Vagrant isn't going to get my support.

i haven't lived in LA since growing up there, but evertime i'm back, which is usually twice a year, I manage to find 3 or 4 shows that I want to go see. 3+ Replies

When did the Knitting Factory close?! I'll admit I haven't been there since 2008, but I'm pretty sure it didn't close down, did it? 2+ Replies

That state is just diving straight into hell financially, can't say I'm surprised.

even the blonde-haired girl from the ModCloth.com ad looks sad about this.

I didn't realize you needed city support to put on punk shows 1+ Reply

The Knitting Factory was an awful place to see a show. How can a venue that isn't that old (like the Whiskey, The Roxy, et al) not have air-conditioning in Los Angeles? And who really wants to go see music in a mini-mall? I appreciate that they regularly booked punk and underground music of all stripes, but there's NEVER a shortage of bands to see and places to see them. 2+ Replies

We are from the LA area and it truly is tough to get a show booked in the area. The venues that do book local talent are all pay to play with an expectancy of a minimum of 60 tickets per band just to get on the bill, If your band isn't in high school or isn't supported by a label or a bunch of street teams to promote it, it is very hard to fulfill that expectancy on a wednesday night. As a result the only places that will actually book places for bands to play in LA without pay to play are either 21+ venues or places like the smell whose general audience couldn't care less about something that doesn't sound like it was recorded with a tin can in an abandoned concert hall. This isn't bitterness, it's factual information. I love LA, but I am very happy to play the cooler venues in the surrounding areas that actually support underground music and don't try to exploit it show rest of comment 5+ Replies

this is hardly news. ever since the mid-to-late 90s, LA has had one of the worst, most disorganized "underground" scenes in the world. there is literally no DIY scene to speak of. 1+ Reply
half_head (November 9, 2009)
yeah, i think there are plenty of places for bands on those kinds of labels to play. In hollywood alone without the knitting factory and whatever else they mentioned, there has to be around 10 other places to play.
smits (November 9, 2009)
There is still Spaceland, The Echo and all those type of venues. They are also cheaper because they sell tickets through ticketweb. The Troubadour will always be the best (Larry Arms on Saturday ruled). The biggest problem is places like Spaceland and the Echo are 21+ and the LA scene now compared to when I was growing up has run dry. Too many bands just skip LA now. With mostly every club being pay to play in any case I don't really blame them. Oh and The Roxy and Whisky have been run down for years, all that ever really goes through those places is complete shit, neither are worth going to or playing anymore. Death to LiveNation almost $20 in fees to go see any show in this town. 1+ Reply

Also the location of the Knitting Factory was odd. I would really rather not hang out on Hollywood Blvd. with all the tourists. I hope they try to open another Knit in a part of Hollywood that would suit it a little better.

The LA scene is a microcosm for what is occurring across the continent. People don't want to hear guitars anymore; they just want their mindless hip hop and useless unce-unce dance music. I find society painfully ironic. 15 years ago there was a broad interest level in music, which has considerably narrowed since. At the same time, peoples appearances have expanded and more punk rock rooted styles have been embraced by the mainstream (dyed hair, piercings, tattoos, etc.), w/o people absorbing the best component of punk rock: the music. As appearences have become more aggressive, personalities have converged, and people have become more uniform in thought. Not nearly as many kids wanna go and hear a band play when they are getting fed the joys of lying, cheating and stealing through hip hop which is getting further reinforced by its acceptance from show rest of comment 3+ Replies

It's always sad to see venues get shut down, but seriously, you're in L.A., that can't be as worst as in Quebec City. All the ''small'' all-age venues have shut down, most bar who books shows too. We've got like 3 to 5 venue left, and only 1 of them book all week long. The other are like on week ends or they have a show quota that they don't want to cross. House show and early show are quasi inexistant. So yeah it sucks for you guys, but this will never ruin your scene, here it's almost killing it.

Professor Bunkum here from www.cityofdevils.info, the blog that conducted the interview with Daniel Dismal. We appreciate all of you for reading it, but do want to respond to a few of the negative comments about the website, especially those that claim there is some big chasm separating the underground punk and metal scenes: -- we cover edward colver (www.edwardcolver.com), a punk legend, and believe what he has done should impact anyone that loves live music -- we’ve written about the adolescents, tsol, fear and the “old school” punk bands in our warped tour coverage, while completely ignoring all the crap at the warped tour -- we covered the meatmen show and motorhead shows and gave away tix to butthole surfers while showing pix of them nobody had ever seen. -- we interviewed dusty watson who show rest of comment 3+ Replies
