Adam Yauch launches direct-mail DVD company, Osclloscope

Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys and producer of the Bad Brains has joined ThinkFilm executive David Fenkel to found a direct-mail DVD program. The $150 subscription service, called 'Circle of Trust,' plans to ship a new DVD per month for its next 10 releases one week prior each film's official release to the public. Subscribers will also be able to purchase DVDs from the Oscilloscope catalog at half price.

Yauch told The Hollywood Reporter about his plans:

It's kind of like when you're a kid and get a magazine and you don't know exactly what you're going to get, but that's what makes you so excited about it, Hopefully we reach that level of harassment."

No word on what kind of films will make up the subscription services inaugaral lineup but the company owns the rights to Colin Beavan's environmental documentary No Impact Man and Oren Moverman's military drama, The Messenger. Along with his production and musical work, Yauch also frequently directed some of the Beastie Boys' more elaborate music videos under the name Nathanial Hörnblowér.

So this morning I wake up to the sound of my Carbon Monoxide detector blaring. Last time it went off over the summer we called up the Fire Dept. and they determined that it was a false positive, which are apparently pretty rare when you're using the newer LED light detectors. My mom unplugs it because she "can't have it blaring when she's at work". I don't know where she left it, so I am very possibly sitting in a house full of toxic gas.

How's everyone else today?

I have no idea why you'd pay this much for 10 DVD's. Can you not buy them elsewhere or rent them?

Cuz they're really amazing films, and most (if not all) are independents.

Wendy and Lucy, Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son about his Father, The Garden, Treeless Mountain, Beautiful Losers, THe Messenger, THe Exploding Girl...

All extremely well-made movies, and many have won awards at various important festivals worldwide. Why not support something like that?

I'm almost sure you could buy them cheaper used or online somewhere. That's what I do, and II haven't paid more than $10 for one movie in almost 3 1/2 years.

So you don't know what movie you're getting? I'd much rather kill the surprise than pay $150 for a DVD grab bag.
