There are lots of bomb-throwing fundamentalist nutjobs on both sides, but there is FAR greater support among Israelis for "left-wing" ideals like plurality, equality, secularism and international law than is reported in the west. Just look at polls on even the most contentious issues like sovereignty over Jerusalem. Israeli government policy is appallingly authoritatian for an industrialized country, toward non-Jews especially, but it's really not reflected in the populace opinion-wise. Non-fanatical young people despise Netanyahu and want all this Zionist bullshit over with and two peaceful, open states alongside one another.

Then again, right-wing Zionist extremists are a bigger problem than is reported over here, too. One well-armed Israeli nutjob is a lot more dangerous than a year's worth of those laughable unguided coffee-can rockets the Palestinians randomly and fruitlessly lob acros

I was referring more to the government policies than the population. I want to say there was an article about some band getting arrested in Israel for something very minor, but I don't recall. And your last little bit always comes to mind when I hear that Israel "returned fire" on the news. I'm sure the fighters aren't using equitable fire power.

Is it really that fun to trash people's taste in music -- and I've been accused of being pretentious. All these lists are good because they're personal opinions; sorry there's no Larry Arms, Dear Landlord, or Banner Pilot.

My complaint is that some of the lists -- including from staffers or editors -- are completely inappropriate for this site. Would it kill them to compile a punk top 10 list .. there is still plenty of variety and more than enough releases to choose from

I honestly don't see how that's a problem. These lists aren't: "the best bands relevant to punknews", they are "people who volunteer to punknews tell us their favorite records of the year, and if there are some records you have never heard of or find irrelevant, maybe someone who listens to punk music could appreciate it because chances are you're being a presumptious asshole for thinking the music sucks without listening to it." Personal opinion. That's all it is. If you're expecting people in bands, your friends, or punknews to have an agenda with their favorite music, that's just lame.

I'm glad they're soliciting and posting list from so many different people and am not trying to box in what they choose.

But I also don't want to read 20 lists each picking 20 bands I've never even heard of, which is what it feels like some of the Staff Picks devolve into as their tastes move in different directions over time, Which, again, is fine -- but I don't care to read about it, really.

So, yeah some of the staffers do deserve to catch some shit for their lists IMO.

Fair enough, but there are only so many records that everyone knows, and I don't want to see everyone saying the same thing. I like seeing bands I've never heard about, it makes the lists useful -- gives you new music. Who cares about year end lists? Like really? What's the point if you aren't discovering something new or getting an argument on whether an underrated record deserves a higher score. That's productive. Otherwise, it's just to show off how cool you are. Of course, there will be a majority of bands that go on everyone's list, though.

Yeah, i think it's weird how it all came about. Someone gave Jimmy Fallon the reissue of it, and he had never heard them before, but after he listened, he was talking to his producer, and he said, "Wouldn't it be cool if we could get Jawbox?", and so they went after them, and the rest is history.
I hope they keep it going.... it was really cool to see that. I got weird, nervous jitters right before I saw it..., the same ones right before I saw Murder City Devils, Dinosaur Jr. and Jesus Lizard reunions....
It's gotta happen as a tour
