In the August 2002 issue of Seventeen magazine, there is an article by Mara Schwartz entitled "Am I emo?" This article includes a full page on how to dress "emo," and even some "emo" pick up lines. Suggestions on how to look emo include toting "deep reads" from authors such as JD Salinger. There are also really annoying references to "emo" bands. For instance, "Black Hair Dye: Because blonds don't really have more fun (not at the Get Up Kids show, anyway)."

Time to cut your moppy hair and take back them big thick glasses 'cause emo is not going to be "hip" by next summer with all the attention it is getting from these shit mags. Read on.

There is also a two page article on some "emo" bands. Bands included are Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, the Rocking Horse Winner, Onelinedrawing, Thursday, and Desaparecidos. Offers links to "emo" websites such as fourfa.com, makeoutclub.com, vagrant.com, among others. I guess all the 12 year olds realized Nsync isn't cool anymore. The following quote was probably the one that annoyed me the most:

"But the one thing these artists do have in common is that they're all independent-minded rock acts. Some, like Jimmy Eat World and Thursday, have already been snatched up by major labels eager to make emo the next big thing. We kinda hope it's not." -And that's why they're publishing this article in a teen magazine?

Mainstream has always sucked the big one anyway. Most non-mainstream emo sucks as well- althouhg there are a few great emo bands. Most are whinney girl music though. I'm not sure if Hot Water Music is "emo", but I've heard that and they rule- especially the new album "Caution"- it's gonna be awesome, but more punk than emo.

first of all, i would like to comment that dashboard does not suck. actually, he's pretty much teh best person playing out there. im sure u dont kno neone who can play riffs as good as him, and think up of songs that describe everythign so perfectly. secondly, he never called himself emo, that came upon him because that is the kind of music he plays. chris carraba was in a band (that was not emo) before DC and then developed DC. aanywa, emo IS a kind of music. if emo is an expression made up by people who don't understand music, than why is there punk? wouldnt punk just be rock? why is there pop-punk? because there's ppl who want to call themselves punk but they're really pop? you're right, everyk ind of music does contain emotions, but emo is strictly about emotions, and how those emotions affect a person's life. that is why they call acoustic rock emo.

Hahah... One of my friends told me about this and when I was at her house she showed me the article. Its funny becuase they said that girls should have "Jet black hair" but the girl in the picture doesn't have jet black hair, its just brown. Also, guys are supposed to wear "vintage shirts" from thrift stores... but the one that the guy is wearing is from the clothes line "Golferpunk" (i think thats what its called.. I personally never heard of that name, but my friend told me its a brand name). Oh and my personal favorite is that emo girls carry around backpacks to "hold those 12 inch vinyls". Now, if i'm not mistaken, LOTS of people use back packs... so that makes everyone at my school "emo". And girls are supposed to wear thick headbands... and girls are supposed to carry around discmans with their emo albums in there, and they're supposed to roll their pants up ONLY

I can see ska coming back as well. In one issue of the same magazine (seventeen), they had a review for an album from the Suicide Machines. Another one of those magazines has a "Top 10 List" of things to be excited about (i.e. new CDs, books, movies, TV shows, etc) and the new MMBosstones album was #4 on one of them recently. I have heard RBF played on several TV commercials lately. There was some teenybopper movie (that girl from Clarissa Explains It All was in it) and they had Less Than Jake playing during it. Let's not forget that movie that featured Save Ferris. it's coming back. Aeh.

Personally, I'm an Rx fan, a huge one. I don't think that they're a ska band anymore. I have nothing against ska, it's all I listen to and I love it. But I really think that they've moved away from it, added more. Yeah, they still have horns, but they've got their own style and I think that it's amazing to see them live. I definatly don't think that they've gone the way of the emo band. I know that just about every comment that I read on here trashes them, but they really are very talented and I love their stuff. im a big rx bandits fan, a friend of mine said they had a review in some magazine that made fun of them for being "progressive" ska, whatever i dont care if they are ska i think theyre a good band with a nice diversified style. i definetly see a ska revival on the horizon. i mean mustard plug and slow gherkin have albums in the works, the toasters have one coming out on asian man. lots of smaller ska bands still stay true (check out the diablotones if you havent because they rock www.diablotones.com). in the past year ive seen a lot of the ska stuff on tv and what not, and i know that many bands are still around (witness some bands that have come to LA the last year: skatallites, bad manners, the slackers, the isrealites). It's very typical for a mainstream media co. to skew something becuase they have no idea what they're really talking about. Anytime you hear a description of some underground scene of any sort it's always so off. What really bothers me about these things is they try to pass it off as something it's really not and it tricks the mindless readers. These 'emo' bands they talk about are hardly emo at all. Dashboard is not emo, he sings songs like the googoo dolls do. it's just a guy w/ a guitar...nothing like what emo really was. Songs about girls do not make you emo. Alot of it just trickled down into punk rock and now we have bands that are semi-emoish and semi-punkish and it all gets passed off by alot of people and now, media companies as a fashion and hip style. Like it or not, emo has fallen into being classified as a sub-genre of punk. Alot of people on this site will basically rant on any branch of punk that is, or has ever gotten popular, i.e: ska, emo, power pop, 'garage' punk. The site is 'punknews.org', so it has to cover all aspects and types of music classified as punk, wether you like it or not. Failure to do so would make this site lose its credibility.
