Time to cut your moppy hair and take back them big thick glasses 'cause emo is not going to be "hip" by next summer with all the attention it is getting from these shit mags. Read on.
In the August 2002 issue of Seventeen magazine, there is an article by Mara Schwartz entitled "Am I emo?" This article includes a full page on how to dress "emo," and even some "emo" pick up lines. Suggestions on how to look emo include toting "deep reads" from authors such as JD Salinger. There are also really annoying references to "emo" bands. For instance, "Black Hair Dye: Because blonds don't really have more fun (not at the Get Up Kids show, anyway)." The whole article is filled with "witty" remarks such as this. There is also a two page article on some "emo" bands. Bands included are Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, the Rocking Horse Winner, Onelinedrawing, Thursday, and Desaparecidos. Offers links to "emo" websites such as fourfa.com, makeoutclub.com, vagrant.com, among others. I guess all the 12 year olds realized Nsync isn't cool anymore. The following quote was probably the one that annoyed me the most:
"But the one thing these artists do have in common is that they're all independent-minded rock acts. Some, like Jimmy Eat World and Thursday, have already been snatched up by major labels eager to make emo the next big thing. We kinda hope it's not." -And that's why they're publishing this article in a teen magazine?

If the fact that this article is in Seventeen surprises you, you're an idiot.

Mainstream has always sucked the big one anyway. Most non-mainstream emo sucks as well- althouhg there are a few great emo bands. Most are whinney girl music though. I'm not sure if Hot Water Music is "emo", but I've heard that and they rule- especially the new album "Caution"- it's gonna be awesome, but more punk than emo.
Someone (July 2, 2002)
seventeen magazine? what the fuck is this doing on this website? seventenn is some 14 year old girlie magazine- if someone put me in that mag i'd murder them. And that wasn't a "punk" comment. Comercialization hurts every form of music, not just "punk" people.
Someone (July 2, 2002)
Much love to JD Salinger, but if Catcher in the Rye is "deep reading," then I was a pretty deep 14 year old. But as long as this lame magazine gets kids to read, who am I to complain?
Someone (July 2, 2002)
It'd be cool if they gave some props to other good writers like Bukowski and Huxley...just a thought.
Someone (July 2, 2002)
hahahah, this is too fucking funny. it will blow over though. bands will break up, go back under ground, make completely uncatchy albums.emo as a style of dressing is lame anyway. so's most of the music.i hope this makes emo kids quit being lame. i like alot of 'emo' band but certainly you wouldnt guess by how i dress. i wear whatever the fuck i want to.always remember that badreligeon and rancid were once briefly mainstream.don't let that dissuade your opinion of a band. dorks that surf to makeoutclub are fuckin dorkus malorkus' too. so who cares. anyone else stoked for hte new afi?
FAKESMILE (July 2, 2002)
:) :) :) :) :) :)!!! Smileys really suck, but so does dashboard confessional... There are way better singer/songwriters around, who do not need to call themselves emo to sell records... Emo is nothing... (Almost) Every kind music contains emotions... So why call acoustic rock emo??? I don't understand this stupid expression... Emo is an expression made up by people who don't understand music... I think....
KirbyPuckett (July 2, 2002)
Don't get to excited, this fad (if it is a fad) won't last long. Hip-Hop culture is what's popular and will be popular for quite some time. To many kids put way to much money into their cars, clothes and jewelry. Plus emo doesn't make ya look cool when you're driving down the street in your hooked up Civic.
Someone (July 2, 2002)
emo was a joke term man...used in the beginning for bands like indian summer, embassy, navio forge and all that kinda stuff...ironically, the link given in the article for fourfa.com might do some good for you guys to look at...it's a very informative site actually...for GOOD music

What is this fucking obsession with emo, who gives a shit? why does every one of your shit magazines want to classify emo? I live in England and I'm sick to death of it. I love some *emo* bands but I don't feel the need to right some fucking essay about what it is. argh pisses me off. like that girl with the emo website, it's nice she writes about it but who gives a rats arse?stop this fucking anal classification it's not even punk and it's been big for like a year so now that the novelties warn off can this shite stop being posted on punknews.org I'm just tired and have had a shit day. grr.and I know that the news was trying to say that its wearing thin.
GeetarChick (July 2, 2002)
Hahah...
One of my friends told me about this and when I was at her house she showed me the article. Its funny becuase they said that girls should have "Jet black hair" but the girl in the picture doesn't have jet black hair, its just brown. Also, guys are supposed to wear "vintage shirts" from thrift stores... but the one that the guy is wearing is from the clothes line "Golferpunk" (i think thats what its called.. I personally never heard of that name, but my friend told me its a brand name). Oh and my personal favorite is that emo girls carry around backpacks to "hold those 12 inch vinyls". Now, if i'm not mistaken, LOTS of people use back packs... so that makes everyone at my school "emo". And girls are supposed to wear thick headbands... and girls are supposed to carry around discmans with their emo albums in there, and they're supposed to roll their pants up ONLY show rest of comment

am i the only one who saw the emo boom coming a mile away??????? guess what, ska is gonna be booming again in a couple years. i can already see it starting. it's gonna take a couple years but it's on its way to another boom. am i the only one with enough foresight to see this?
Someone (July 2, 2002)
i feel bad for the people who always liked this music and who always dressed that way. now thell just be lumped in with the posers. JoSH
Someone (July 2, 2002)
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahaha hahaha! emo sucks! and now that its "hip to be emo", it sucks even more! got to start whering my "punk rocks, emo sucks!" t-shirt. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahaha im such a crazy fuck -sayne guy
lockdown59 (July 2, 2002)
It's great when people write about shit they know nothing about. So "emo" is all the craze, soon, no one will give a flying fuck. Let it ride. Seventeen and its employees are fucking losers. This is so fucking rediculous. "Am I emo?" No one give a shit if you are.
Someone (July 2, 2002)
wow if salinger is considered emo then i've been emo since ebfore it was emo to be emo.
Someone (July 2, 2002)
I never thought I'd say the day when Desaparecidos would appear in Seventeen. Ok, maybe Thursday and JEW (who suck anyways). But how the fuck did a shitty girlie mag find out about Saddle Creek Records??!!
Someone (July 2, 2002)
Kay... first of all, if everyone is so punk, wtf do you care what some 12 yr old kids are doing? Everyone knows that article was mad commercialization but WHO CARES... They aren't changing your mind. Thats what matters. Besides, if these kids are stupid enough to follow that (they all are of course) then that just creates fuel for future punks of North America. Lets just thank sweet jesus they aren't doing any punk articles... for now. Oh, yeah. They'll get us too. XxvanessaxX
Someone (July 2, 2002)
Come'on all...emo is now what ska use to be....image + scene....identical...every emo band is now not an emo band but a rock band....kind of like all the ska bands talked about how they are more rock. soon the fad will die and we will be onto our next musical genre. the emo genre has been saturated with so many aweful bands its makes me sick......death to emo..woohoo
Someone (July 2, 2002)
I heard this one band called Expecting the Worst. They are awesome. here's the link to their site. http://www.expectingtheworst.cjb.net oh yeah, and uh.... emo
Someone (July 2, 2002)
Who cares, emo sucks my sack anyway. Hopefully now all you losers will die out.
Someone (July 2, 2002)
Shut up all you guys! There's a lot of valuable information in this article. You guys are just jealous that the crew at Seventeen has managed to crack your secret code and find out how to become emo just like you. Look out emo scene, here we come!
Someone (July 2, 2002)
By the way, here are my tips on how to become emo: Step 1: Buy an "emo" album. Step 2: Enjoy it. I'm sending this to Cosmo Girl. Now all I have to do is wait for the checks to roll in.
xowenx (July 3, 2002)
emo sucks shit. heavy metal rules all that emo shit sucks. it doesn't belong in this world... it belongs on fucking mars man.
Someone (July 3, 2002)
LETS GET SOME SHIT STRAIGHT NOW!! Hot Water Music and Fugazi ARE NOT EMO u fuckin' idiots and if they are than Dashboard and Get Up Kids are not Emo- because they have nothing in common anywhere- lyrics or music. HWM sounds more like hardcore melodic experimental punk rock to me- but giving music a genre is really stupid- there are only two kinds of music- GOOD and BAD- Dashboard and Get Up Kids are BAD Music, HWM and Fugazi are GOOD music.- it's all in your opinion though- but quit being little girls about the whole classificaion thing- it's music, each band SHOULD be different- even though a lot aren't. I could swear that new found glory, blink 182 and sum 41 were the same shitty band!
Someone (July 3, 2002)
You bunch of ignorant dicks! You trash on bands that people call emo. If theyre werent called emo you wouldnt say anything about them. It's not like they call themselves emo. And if they did, who cares, it's still music. How revolutionnary, I listen to "emo" bands, some i like, some i dont like, hmm I like some punk and some i dont. I like some ska but not all. Wow and I also listen to hip hop, reggae, jazz, blues, rock, folk. Now some of you will say im an idiot cuz i listen to music they dont like. So for some people I'll be stupid cuz I listen to jazz. Other cuz I listen to HipHop. Music stays music. If you get pissed off for stupid shit like that. You seriously need to get a life. It's just music. People have different tastes. The only thing I have against some music is the message their sending to the young people. Like being a slut or killing people. Besides t show rest of comment
Daegan (July 3, 2002)
When will they be satisfied? Have they not already ruined half the shows I actually enjoy going to? What next, are they gonna throw Rancid and NOFX on the cover and send their legions of screaming girls to those shows too? Fucking hell! Yes, I do enjoy music that could be classified "emo" (although I still stand by my assertion that Saves The Day and Get Up Kids are not emo) and I've even been in a band that played a couple of "emo" songs ourselves, but none of us ever went out of our way to attempt to "look" emo. It's a musical subgenre, not a fucking clothing style. Tommy Hilfiger is never going to make an "emo" sweater or "emo" jeans (hopefully). Still, the simple fact that now I'm going to have to put up with all these insolent fucks trying way too hard to be "cool" and acting like idiots at the shows I go to during my entire senior year is a big fucking downer... show rest of comment

It's very typical for a mainstream media co. to skew something becuase they have no idea what they're really talking about. Anytime you hear a description of some underground scene of any sort it's always so off. What really bothers me about these things is they try to pass it off as something it's really not and it tricks the mindless readers. These 'emo' bands they talk about are hardly emo at all. Dashboard is not emo, he sings songs like the googoo dolls do. it's just a guy w/ a guitar...nothing like what emo really was. Songs about girls do not make you emo. Alot of it just trickled down into punk rock and now we have bands that are semi-emoish and semi-punkish and it all gets passed off by alot of people and now, media companies as a fashion and hip style. I think people need to get a grip on what emo is/was before they use the word to describe anything in the ind show rest of comment

What the hell are you guys complaining about? I only wish that a popular girls magazine would publish an article about how cool my scene is, how to join it, and eventually how to get laid by some average guy who listens to the music. I openly encourage magazines that instruct young women how to attract and hook up with me. Does anybody know if Seventeen has a sister publication geared towards women who won't get me arrested for statutory rape?
Someone (July 3, 2002)
i swear i saw this coming!!! emo is the next big thing! why? BECAUSE IT INVOLVES LOVE AND WHINES! man... you bunch are fags! emo sucks! music wise, lyric wise, fans wise, and pit wise. oh now put me down for being hardcore on you kiddos. - n'deso
KirbyPuckett (July 3, 2002)
emo isn't really that big kids, you're all so fuckin' worried about shit. you blow it way out of the water.
Zeiter (July 3, 2002)
Like it or not, emo has fallen into being classified as a sub-genre of punk. Alot of people on this site will basically rant on any branch of punk that is, or has ever gotten popular, i.e: ska, emo, power pop, 'garage' punk. The site is 'punknews.org', so it has to cover all aspects and types of music classified as punk, wether you like it or not. Failure to do so would make this site lose its credibility.
Someone (July 3, 2002)
haha its funny, it also reminds me of the big ska trend a few years ago, i remeber this girl showed me a 17 or ym with a big article on ska and profiles of bands like Less than jake, reel big fish, mustard plug, and all the others who got big. -moldy
Someone (July 4, 2002)
emo is a big fad that will die off and there will be a few good ones left. and the rest will become nothing. kinda like the whole ska explosion a few years back, theres only a few ska bands people actually know.
Someone (July 4, 2002)
those bands that they call emo r much more intresting then those boring punk bands preaching about bullshit they know nothing about concidering they dident finish grammer school anyways emo or watever is much better then gay pop punk or street punk 1
eyeball_kid (July 4, 2002)
Don't worry, the emo trend will surely be usurped by the new Hip-Hop trend of wearing a plaster or a sling even if you don't need one.
Someone (July 6, 2002)
To start things off:
In a really big nutshell emo is just punk with feelings (i might be wrong, but that's my opinion) and now, if you are going to just consider certain bands that sing of heartbreaks, relationships, anger, happiness, sadness whatever then you're considering every god damn band in the world emo. I mean, every song by every band is based on some type of feelings or emotions. Sure, some people may say that Seventeen catching the emo scene very bad or whatever. But then again, it's somewhat good in a way, a lot of bands who've been working their asses off for a really long time are finally getting noticed. To you it may not be the right type of people (posers, blink182 freaks who only wear hurley and atticus because tom and mark do) but at least it's somebody. There's probably some bands who are really pissed off for getting noticed like that but yet, some show rest of comment

that "am I emo" article makes me fucking SICK! and it pisses me off they have to lable emo as some sort of a lifestyle, fuck that.
Someone (October 13, 2002)
my friend who is not into emo or punk (you know all that good stuff) had that issue of seventeen magazine and she brought it to school to show me b/c she knows im into emo. i freaked out. it was so fucking sad. they told you how to fucking DRESS... that's...GAH. so fucking trendy and commerical. and i also saw a small article on emo in ym magazine...i was really pissed b/c i just realized that emo is the new "pop".
Someone (December 26, 2002)
why do you fuckin dipshits waste your time worrying about some stupid shit you read in a Seventeen Magazine. (may i remind you that you were READING A SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE!!) dear god what the fuck is wrong with you people? all you fucking do is worry about being out of the "mainstream". in my opinion, that makes you know beter than people worrying about being IN the mainstream. why not live your life as who you are, not what you dont want to be seen as?
distillersfan (February 17, 2003)
emo is shit and emo kids are shit. seventeen mag can fall into that catagory too. but seriously, ''am i emo?'' no one gives a flying fuck if you are, and anyone reading seventeen wouldn't be emo. wait, maybe they would. a pussy mag for a pussy kid with pussy music. |
