As Friends Rust Name Change Confirmed

According to a journal entry from asfriendsrust.net, the band has changed it's name to Salem. This was rumoured for awhile, but it's confirmed as of the 12th of September: "We are not breaking up or changing the sound of the band anymore than we did from the Won album to the most recent E.P. [...] We are simply looking forward to a fresh start and a name we can call our own. We will continue to tour and write under the name Salem. We will also continue to play songs off the 2 most recent releases Won and A Young Trophy Band..." They can change their name to Maurice for all I care, I love that band.

Well looks like I won't be seeing them live. I don't really like those last two releases. Fists Of Time and the s/t are where it's at.

Oh for fuck's sake. I was just making a comment that I prefer a different era of their music. It's not elitism, it's taste. And how am I a superfan? I don't even like half of their output. Dumbass.

agreed. the last two releases are dangerously close to being alt-rock... i think that the name change is good because the band is going in a totally different direction. it's the responsible thing to do. having said that, i would like to say that the guys in the current line-up are some of the nicest guys that i have ever met. they are really down to earth and super cool. i guess to sum it all up, i will miss as friends rust (i wish that i saw them play with some original members) and i wish salem the best of luck.

I don't know for sure, maybe because they got a new singer, that's just a shot in the dark though.

That really is the only logical explanation that anyone can come up with. Normally its the vocals that people use to distinguish one band from another. I am a very new fan of As Friends Rust (or shoud I say "Salem?"). I didn't realize that they had a different singer earlier on (I first heard them and fell in love with them hen I heard "A Young Trophy Band. . ."). I mean, I think that the new EP kicks some fucking ass, but between that, and the couple other mp3s I have downloaded, they sound like the same guy. Must be a chance thing.

Actually, the new lead singer came after they recorded the new EP. There is barely anyone in the band right now (possibly no one) that was there when they recorded the Fists Of Time EP. And the Fists Of Time was recorded with a largely different lineup than they began with. As Friends Rust has changed lineups more than would seem possible or even logical, so it's weird that they'd decide to change their name now. If that's the reason for the name change, it would seem more logical that they would've released Won and A Young Trophy Band as Salem. But that's those wacky Floridians for ya. There is division......

i know where they were trying to go with the name "as friends rust" and its a unique name and all, but i wasnt really a big fan of it. they're a pretty cool band...

OK Aubin, you're probably as big a fan of the Rust as I was, but you have to admit that the new singer sucks, I'm REALLY sucks. Maybe I was just spoied by how awesome Damien was, but that guy makes them sound more whiny and less edgy. -sickboi

Sadly, I've never heard him so I can't say, but I do agree that Damien was an incredible singer. I think his vocals on "A Young Trophy Band..." really blew me away.

Since damien's gone, im glad they changed the name. He left right when they peaked, i haven't heard their new singer but I haven't heard anything good. Why doesn't the other singer that usually sings other than damien just take over fully? I suppose they need a screamer for damien's parts, but its a thought.

i'm pretty sure damien did both voices, so they had to get a new singer. i am very frightened by what the new stuff will sound like. i love the ep, and i dont think it can go uphill. i also like "as friends rust" much better than "salem" salem is not as original.

This band is not even close to having the same members as the original line up. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as it stands now, I believe that the only O.G. Rust is the drummer. Now, I liked this band with Damien singing, but I can't get past that douche bag of a new guy trying to lay claim to what I always took to be personal and intense lyrics reflecting on one person's experiences. There is just no emotion when the new guy sings. He seems to be more concerned with his pseudo-hardcore, jump around dance moves than with delivering a solid vocal performance. Did anyone ever see him try and perform "Encante" from the Fists of Time album? It was quite possibly the worst thing I've ever subjected my ears to, and I've sat through sets by Midtown and Saves the Day.

Damien sounded awful live always and a $6,000 recording budget was his only hope for redemption of his awful voice. He was boring and self-centered and easily fooled pathetic hardcore kids that are still stuck on the "Fist of time" as what the band was all about. The new stuff is a million times better and the new guy seems to be doing his best. Lay off. This is why "hardcore" sucks so bad, kids with potty mouths and boring rhetoric.

Damien was also the original singer to shai hulud (a little known fact) They give him credit in the liner notes to the profound hatred 3 song. Chad took over and sang damien's "personal and intense lyrics". Worse yet, chad changed the line "this one's for the world: I HATE YOU", damien had originally written "I love you". So it seems like maybe damien is a starting point for bands, but he gets out when the market gets larger, I cna't blame him, I would too.
