I'm a little perplexed by people talking shit about me cuz I'm not as smart
as Jello Biafra,
or I don't explain myself well enough, or I don't know
what I'm talking about. You all are missing the point completely. I may
not be that smart, but I am doing something.
Only smart people are allowed
to voice their opinions?
Most Americans aren't very smart when compared to
citizens from other developed nations. So what. It's not about who's the
smartest, it's about doing the right thing. You don't have to be a college
grad to know that we're getting hosed. George Bush's
policies are ruining
this country and if you don't see that, you're just not paying
attention. The election in 2000 was a worldwide joke and Bush did not
win.
He didn't win the popular vote and his brother fixed Florida. There
are books, movies, newspaper articles
written about it ("The Best Democracy Money Can Buy",
and "Unprecendented" are a couple of good ones), but no one seems to care.
Well I do care and I
just can't sit around and do nothing about it. Sorry if I'm not as
articulate as some, but as I said earlier, that's not the point. I'm just
a regular guy trying to speak for regular guys and girls everywhere. We
regular people are the ones who have to work together to make change. So
please stop wasting time pointing out what my flaws are. My brain may be a
little slow some days, but my heart's in the right place and I think that's
a lot more important.
thanx,
Fat Mike

Fat Mike sent us a little essay about the criticisms to his recent punkvoter.com and other political actions. I have to support Mike on this one, it's one thing to agree or disagree with government policies, but to admonish someone for expressing opinions at all just isn't right. The founders of the country explicitly designed the democractic process to include checks and balances, not the least of which was public dissent. Looking towards the government with a critical eye doesn't make you a bad citizen, it means you live up to the spirit of what the founding fathers intended.

Fat Mike you rule. 10 years ago I wrote an essay about how you were one of the people that I most admired for High School English class. 10 years later, it's still true. 5+ Replies

Did he send this specifically to punknews.org? If so you guys are develpoing quite the punk celebrity fanbase. Fat Mike, Mr. Brett....wow. Anywho, props to Fat Mike for being decent about this and not bitching. The one thing I don't understand about this people complained that Fat Mike was immature and and only talked about stupid shit, he tries to be political and still gets slack. I'd like to see him take a stab at spoken word. He's funny as hell and would probably be pretty entertaining. -sickboi 4+ Replies

Fat Mike kind of has a good point. He's probably not as stupid as people think but he seems stupid because he speaks when he's not informed. He says "Bush did not win. He didn't win the popular vote and his brother fixed Florida." First, the popular vote doesn't determine the winner in a presidential election and second, there is no proof that Jed Bush fixed the Florida election. I guess he is doing something like he says, he's just doing it without the right information. That my friends, is what makes him an idiot. You don't have to be smart to voice your opinion, but you should be informed. 8+ Replies

well george bush did win the election. he won 271 votes in the electoral college and he only needed 270 to win the presidency. all the populat vote does is decide which electors vote in the electoral college. all the candidates select, for example, 13 electors in VA prior to the election because the number of representatives (11 for VA) and the number of senators (2 for every state). so if a republican were to win the VA popular vote then republican electors would vote in the electoral college, but if a democrat won the VA popular vote then democratic electors would vote in the electoral college. sure bush didn't win the populat vote, but he won the electoral vote which is what really matters since that is what truly elects the president 4+ Replies

There is in fact proof that someone fixed the election in florida. What happened was they ran a database scan over all convicted felons in the state, to keep them from voting. But what also happened is that they did a name and birthday SIMILARITY match, which had a 33% rate of false positives!!!! Even the mayor of one city was told she could not vote because her name was similar to a felon's!!

BUT, i just thought id like to explain what those people speaking against him might have meant
no you dont have to be smart to have an opinion, but you should be educated. now it sounds like mike has done lots of reading, and thats good... but has he only read stuff from one side of the arguement? or does he just rean noam chomski?. if he doesnt read things from all ends of the political spectrum, then his veiws are biased and uninformed.
also, the CHANCES of his opinions being right are muchg less than those of an educated person who KNOWS how politics ACTUALLY works, and who realizes that politics can always work the way we would liek them too. just as id trust an engineer to build a better bridge than fat mike... and just as id trust a doctor to preform open heart sugery on me more th show rest of comment 2+ Replies

I don't remember many complaints about whether or not he was smart enough to get his points across. And I'd say that one would HAVE to explain themselves well in order to get people to listen. If I just said "George Bush sucks" no one would care. If I said "George Bush sucks for points a, b and c" people would probably listen a bit more. Finally, his "don't point out my flaws" reeks of George Bush-style spindoctoring. It's totally unpatriotic to question our leaders. In conclusion, Fat Mike has picked up on two minor complaints that people had and completely ignored the rest. (Party politics, the "good" Republicans like John McCain and, uh, you know, Trent Lott, etc.) Try harder, buddy.

I say that Mr. Burkett has done more than enough for most of us in the post-punk world.
No one else has provided such a forum for dissenting voices in a time of "Hush -- Bush isn't an idiot, he's our president. We're at war... shhh!".
The Not My President campaign will probably be one of Mr. Burkett's greatest legacies. It may not be the most intelligent form of debate and socially scientific manner of execution, but it does get out there to a lot of kids that wouldn't normally be exposed to that type of issue. If he can allign at least a portion of future markets into just getting out there and using your say to do what's right, then that is more than any one I know of in the punk rock world has been able to do. I don't care if Mike wants to speak sure he can, no problem. But he's not leaving any room for critics. His views are full of "us" and "we" I respect unity but the way he talks he thinks he's speaking for all of us. And he never really comes out and says what he would like to be done, he just insults Bush. I just don't think he's credible, Fat Mike has had an easy life and I don't think he understands or knows what's best for the country or the punk community. I know Bush has had an easy life too. A few things:
-Punk rock has always been about politics.
-Politics don't belong to politicians, but to people, like you or me or Fat Mike, so
-Fat Mike would be a moron not to express his opinions considering 1)He's right about Bush 2)People listen to him
-If Fat Mike was a sellout, he would have signed with MTV years ago, and he WOULDN'T talk about politics, but about dating girls in hi-school.
-Fat Mike is NOT pro-democrat, he's just anti-republican, and voting democrat is the only efficient way to defeat republicans.
-And at least as he says he's doing something else than just bitch at people on message boards about how uncool they are

I'm glad that Fat Mike dealt with this issue because he was taking a ton of bullshit criticism. First off, while Fat Mike is pretty modest about it, he is a smart guy. He did graduate from college and start a big indy label. Like he said though, that isn't important at all. He is absolutely right that you don't have to be smart to voice your opinion. You don't have to be smart to realize that Gore got more votes than Bush, that Bush is letting his oil buddies destroy our environment, that US foreign policy puts oil over human life or the possible war on Iraq is unnecessary and will kill thousands of people. The things our government does are fucking tragedies and criticizing someone for speaking up about them is ridiculous.
