NOFX talk PunkVoter, banned from Blockbuster

NOFX is "getting off the bench" to do interviews in support of Punk Voter. As part of their media blitz they'll be appearing in and on the cover of Alternative Press this month. Video rental giant Blockbuster is refusing to carry the issue because they find the cover offensive. On the cover NOFX mimicked the Dixie Chicks' infamous Entertainment Weekly cover " to show their support and props to the ladies." The original is viewable here, the NOFX one can be seen here.

The guy who owns hollywood video used to live in my city and the company is based where i am from and he built this huge mansion outside town and tried to build some manmade rock cove thingy to revert the willamette river and give him privacy from the rest of the river trash. The wall thingy was fucken huge! naturally the environmental agencies made him tear it down and now he scrapped the half finished house and skipped town.

I'm all for supporting independent business, but not when that support becomes a "duty". There are very few "mom and pop" video stores anymore anyway and the ones that ARE still around are generally either underground video stores (which is great if that's what you're looking for) or have piss poor selections. Wow, you're really the first person to try to enlighten people to independent business. Thanks so much. Maybe you can watch your movies on a DVD player made by a Mom and Pop home electronics manufacturer.

We have a really awesome local video store in Madison. Not only do they have a bigger selection than Blockbuster, but they're cheaper too. They have a whole wall of music related videos and twice as many foreign movies. It's too bad not everyone has a Four Star Video. -rgashley

The "silly" things were paying homage to what the Dixie Chicks had written on them for their cover story (ie Dixie Sluts = NOFX Sluts, etc.). They have a tinge of humor in that they don't take themselves too seriously or get caught up in self-righteousness, all the while dealing with a subject that they do take quite seriously.

What he was trying to convey was that even though many people believe something is okay, that does not mean it is. Slavery used to be an idea many people found to be totally fine because they treated the slaves as less. In modern times, many people treat gays as lesser people. It's not right to say to a gay couple that they can't have the same benefits of a married straight couples (taxes and stuff). In a way, government endorsed marriage that takes the religious view of marriage (man and woman) is unconstitutional. Seperation of Church and State may apply there, I'm not sure, but thanks to our forefathers, the Constitution is open to interpretation that best suits the needs of generations. Even though everyone has made it clear already, I would like to emphasize a couple of points. First of all Blockbuster is probably the worst movie rental chain in recent history, thus it doesn't suprise me they refuse to sell this copy of AP. Second the cover is absolutely hilarious. Third is my take on NOFX. I honestly believe everyone grows out of them, and if you didn't then thats fine too. They are a great band at what they do, but have little to no talent compared to a Bad Religion or Fugazi. No one told me to take NOFX seriously so I didn't. -intheshapeofawineglass

I feel ya, but I also get what this shape-of-a-wine-glass dude is saying... I loved NOFX in high school and love seeing them live, but it just doesn't connect with me anymore. Now the Queers are something else entirely! Love Songs for the Retarded is, if not the best, one of the best punk albums to come out in my lifetime! (On the way home I'm totally listening to it...) i remember hearing or reading a few years ago that blockbuster is owned by a conserative christian group or person and that they do or at least used to have a say in movies and wouldn't allow in movies and sometimes studios would have them preview a movie before it was even in the theaters so they could remove the "objectional content" they also rarely stocked things like directors cuts or in thier music store i remember them not having any artists with a pa sticker on them. this may have something to do with the objection to the mag, i guess naked men hanging out together makes jesus cry or something, but naked women make him smile ;)

I'm not a teenager, but I was when Punk in Drublic and Two Heebs came out, and let me tell you, NOFX will always have a place in my heart. Hey, I also like Lagwagon, NUFAN, Bad Religion, and a whole slew of other bands that the kids these days like to dismiss, because they meant something to me when I was their age. Of all those bands, NOFX is still putting out decent music too. War on Errorism is criticized for being political? Wow, thats such a problem with punk music these days, not enough bitching about ex girlfreinds and too much political lyrics (not to mention how a certain type of silly humor is just fucking everywhere, not enough people are taking their shitty bands serious enough these days). the criticizing wasn't due to the fact that the album was politically based. most criticism i read towards the album mentioned the fact that there is no way NOFX could even try to release a politically charged album, not only because they have little to no idea what they're talking about but also because very few people actually give a fuck about what these guys have to say.

Yeah, there are much more intelligent political-punk bands out there and even better bands, but how many people go on that hunt? If you're really that into politics and social issues, I doubt that your biggest source of information is music. Point is, it's a jumping off point for a lot of kids who aren't that into the issues of the day and are looking to find out more... And for all the badmouthing of NOFX, they have always pointed to their influences and steered kids to who they considered better bands then themselves (Bad Religion, Descendents, Crass, etc.) so they still deserve respect for that. Fat Mike and his crew are by no means getting on their stump and claiming that they know much more than you and because they're more versed in the issues you should listen to them. I agree wholeheartedly. I don't know when it became cool to hate NOFX, but I'm really getting sick of it. At least their proactive. Too many "punks" just sit around talking about why all the bands suck in a genre they supposedly love.
