In Memoriam: Dead Milkmen bassist Dave Blood

Dave Blood, bassist of the near-legendary and now-defunct indie punks the Dead Milkmen, passed away on March 10th. His sister Kathy posted the news on the Dead Milkmen message board, saying:

"My brother was a smart clever and talented person. Inner peace has seemed to elude him for the last many years. Sometime last night David chose to end his life. He left a note that I don't know all of what it said,he was not elaborate-but he said he just could not stand to go on any longer."

There will be a memorial service in the Delaware County area in the coming weeks; we'll bring you more news on that as we have it.

Our condolences go out to the friends, family, and fans of Dave Blood.

I loved this band, this is extremely unfotunate. I wish nothing but the best for all of his family having to deal with such a tragedy.

The Dead Milkmen were the band that introduced me to punk back in 1985 and because of them I've grown to love many punk bands and what they stand for. This is awful news and my condolences go out to all who are related to Dave & all who knew him. Suicide always is rough because the picture is never clear to as of why, there's always unanswered questions. This is a sad day. I'm bummed, for lack of a better word. I'll always love the Dead Milkmen for what they exposed me to so Mr. Dave Blood, thanks and see you on the other side, I hope your pain has ended.

ditto- i havent listened to them in a long time but i still remember that they were the first live band i ever saw in 85 or 86 at a hall on penn state's campus-it was absolutely great- very sad news

This is just a shame and a pity. It's so unfortunate that he felt like this was the best decision that he could make. I wish friends and family the best and hope that fans can continue listening to the band for years to come, appreciating the music he made.

This is really sad. The Dead Milkmen were one of the first bands that I ever became truly obsessed with and were also one of the first "big" bands that I ever saw in a club setting. People seem to take their songwriting and musical ability for granted in light of the fact that their lyrics were silly and funny... but they really were a GREAT band. Their breakup was disappointing and this new news is just sad as hell. RIP

That's a shame. Like a guy above said, The Dead Milkmen were a great "gateway" punk band. Even kids who said they didn't like punk loved "Bitchin Camaro" and it got them listening to other stuff in the process. I don't think they ever got as much respect as they should have. even though they were a "joke punk" band. And "Punk Rock Girl" is still one of the coolest songs EVER.

The Dead Milkmen were the first "punk" band I ever saw live, as well as my first circle pit, my first stage dive, and my first small club show. This is very sad news - RIP. -SuburbanHeather

Like another poster above, they were one of the first punk bands I ever listened to, and I quickly went from them to all the other great Philly punk bands of the mid-80s- Ruin, More Fiends, McRad, Electric Love Muffin, etc. "Big Lizard In My Backyard" is imprinted on my brain forever.Condolences to the friends and family, his art meant a lot to us, and he achieved some immortality through it.

Having interacted with Dave on Rodney's board a few times, it is horrible to see this happen. However, perhaps this is the release he wanted...either way, I will mourn for a world that is now left with one less decent person.

I don't think I've ever heard any of their songs. However, they are well known and respected. I've only heard good things about this band. I too will like to extend my wishes and prayer that his family and friends may find comfort in each other , and that they can hold the great memories they have of him in their hearts. suicide is stupid, it's the worst option in any situation, as long as you're alive, there's always something you can do to change things. Once the gigs up, it's up. condolences to family and friends, they're the ones who suffer, not the deceased.

Friend, depression is something that is to hard to say cheaply that, you can just get over it. I understand how emotional it can be, and I won't be naive to say I know how you feel. but when it comes to suicide, it must be said that it is sad. It is just sad, because, without going too religious or spiritual, there are things worth living for. Love worth finding. When people get angry that he killed himself, it's simply because we wish that he could have overcome, and for every suicide, people start to think that it's not possible to overcome. With the right steps, you can change your life for the better.

Not as late as I! Just found out a few days ago when I got a tech-head at work to enter 'Dead Milkmen' into a search engine as a trial. Was a very weird scene, trying to explain why I had gotten so upset. Condolences and my thoughts to all of Dave's friends and family - you can never guess what's in someone's head but you always beat yourself up for not noticing when things like this happen. So very, very sad. I believe in the Beatles, except for Paul.
