One of the largest media companies on the planet, the Universal Music Group posesses a market share of almost a quarter of all global music sales. The story of Universal is one rife with mergers and acquisitions, although it can be traced back to 1898 with Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft. The consolidation is too lengthy to list here, but today's Universal has been built on formerly independent companies like Deutsche Grammophon, Music Corporation of America (MCA), Polydor, Decca, Philips, PolyGram, Verve, ABC, Chess, Island, Def Jam, Geffen, Motown, Rodven, Interscope and Mercury among others.

Tom discusses his upcoming album and film, Love with Billboard and notes that the album will be free, thanks to "corporate underwriting": [Love] is the biggest release of my life, the pinnacle of my creativity. But it's not a rock opera.…No Doubt talks studio time, next album No Doubt spoke to Billboard about their long-awaited studio album. The band notes: "We feel really good about playing together again, and I do believe that's going to lead to a very inspired record as soon as we're done with this tour.
