What can I say. There are few bands out there that can hit you with such originality as Modest Mouse. The band has a history of putting together great, diverse albums that really give you your money's worth. The Moon and Antarctica is no exception. It's 60-70 minutes long, and it's well worth listening to all the way through.

The album is composed beautifully, starting with the poppy and easy to swallow 3rd Planet to get you into the mood for the rest of the CD. The next track is Gravity Rides Everything. This is another easy to digest song, but yet unique and incredible in its own right.

Sure, both of these tracks are pretty easy to listen to, but they hint at something darker yet to come. The Stars Are Projectors is just waiting to be played on the credit line of the right movie, while Lives provides a startling insight into any human's life. Frontman Isaac Brock manages to convey his lyrics in circular patterns that spin around themselves to convey a dark, yet somehow positive messages. In Wild Pack of Family Dogs, slightly disturbing lyrics are masked by a cheery guitar part.

I could go on for hours here folks, but really I can't do justice to the CD. Before this CD came out, everyone wondered how Modest Mouse would fare on their new, major label. Well this reviewer is glad to say that they came through for their fans quite well. A great CD, and a must-have for anyone who likes music.

Isn't Sony's label bigger than epitaph? Oh wait, that's why the cool kids give them shit right?

They're far more creative than Pennywise. But that doesn't mean everyone will like them more.

yeah, they'll never be as good as pennywise or guttermouth.

No?!?!?! My eyes decieve me! A brilliant record not getting abused for being '''un-punk'''??? This album is utter utter brilliance. For those of you who think MM aren't '''punk''', go download their older Dirty Fingernails. That will also prove how diverse they are. For me, however, this is their standout record. Stars are projectors, third planet and gravity rides everything are masterful

Frankly I'm kinda puzzled by all this, how is this record punk? why aren't people jumping all over that? And of course this band sounds like the pixies, name a present rock band that in some way was'nt influenced by the pixies, you'd have a hard time. And as for drive thru, fuck drive thru... And supposedly a modest mouse song is in a beer commercial now, I dunno I never seen it, oh? what? what's that? that's old news? kinda like this album, hahah, if you don't own this album by now I sort of pity you...

This sounds way more like a really boring Fugazi. Good, but not deserving of such a high score.

I love all the comments about Modest Mouse ripping off the Pixies. Whatever man, it's one of their influences. I'm sure you could compare any band you love to a very similar band. You like the Pixies, right? So what's wrong with SOME of Modest Mouse's song sounding like the Pixies? MM is pretty original.

    My Score:

    this CD is fucking awesome...

still, that comment about Modest Mouse having so much more talent than any punk band out there is moronic. i mean come on, they are two completely different kinds of music. Fat Mike couldn't sing as "beautifully" (why would we want him too anyway) as Isaac nor do i think Isaac could pull of Mike's snotty punk vocals. each of these bands is good at what they do.

and remember this, musical proficiency does not necessarily equal good music. after all, punk was the antithesis to all of the arrogant guitar wanking and of the 70's. Ted Nugent could outplay Black Flag, does that make him better?
britney spears can sing more beautifully than Jello Biafra, does that make her better? i don't fucking think so.

with that bullshit out of the way, i have to say this Modest Mouse cd is really, really good. everyone needs to get this.

    My Score:

Why are shitty Drive-Thru bands actually being compared to Modest Mouse??!!! Are you motherfuckers insane????!!! It's insulting to MM!!!

Modest Mouse are SO MUCH more talented than any punk band out there: NoFX, bad Religion, Pennywise. And before you start bitching, ask yourself this: could Fat mike sing as beautifully as Isaac does on "3rd Planet"?? Could Bad Religion pull off guitar solos as wicked as on "The Stars Are Projectors"? I don't fuckin' think so!!!!

And if you compare this band to Somthing Corporate I will strap you down on a table and hammer a twenty inch nail through your forehead, killing you on impact.

Buy this record and have a nice day.

    Fuck Drive-Thru!

I haven't heard this CD, but I might now. I just want to comment on JOE MOMMA's name...
C'mon, maybe in 1986 that name would be funny as hell, but it's been done over & over again. If you are over the age of 12, you should be ashamed of yourself for not being able to come up with a better name. You're just as bad as the uncreative fucks who think they're witty by coming up with stupid personalized licence plates. PLEASE, for the love of god, if you're gonna use some kind of "funny"(using the term VERY lightly) name on your posts, take more than 2 or 3 seconds to come up with one.

i bought this when national record mart was going out of business. and this is perhaps the best 7 dollars that i have ever spent. everything is expertly put together and it all has a real underlying feeling of sadness. but modest mouse doesn't feel the need to beat the listener over the head with it like some bands who're unable to do anything with any amount of subtlety.
