To me and many people my age the shot gun blast took not only Cobain's life but also immortalized him and the band Nirvana forever. Because of this the band has become a sort of scared cow, one everyone would acknowledge as being wonderful, but no one was allowed to criticize or mess with his songs. That is why this tribute disc has been so long in coming, over eight years have passed since his death and the demise of the band. I have to say when Scott first gave this to me I wasn't sure how I would like it. I felt that no one should be allowed to fuck with these songs, they were sacred and any band trying to do them could never do Nirvana justice. As I was all set to rip this disc apart, something happened, the songs were done extremely well by a batch of artists whom I had never heard of. This surprised me a lot. I have been playing it a lot lately. This disc had a little bit of everything. Since between Scott and I, we didn't know a single band on this I've decided to do a track listing and give people at least an idea of what the bands sound like. "If it weren't for Nirvana, we wouldn't have _________." Dave actually did contribute more than just drums, he sang harmony live and is credited with writing merigold (u can get it in the singles collection) thats a damn good question, i think beacasue thats the city where the label is, and maybe most of the bands come from there. to the guy who couldnt find it, try the label's site, its linked here, they probably have a mailorder If you call a good cover putting it into power chords and adding a punk drum beat to it you've got some serious problems. By the way, I can't find this cd anywhere I just have one question: Why the hell is this album called San Francisco? I'm sorry but the only people that did those songs great was kurt and the gang. so i call this a joke and it should have never come out the only bands that are good at covering things are reel big fish, me first and the gimme gimmes and millencolin i seem to remember a interview he did for foo fighters saying that he really didnt do much guitar/songwritng work for nirvana, he may have helped on parts but he said he just let kurt do all the rest, he said theres the old joke: "Just so you know, Dave only did drums and some vocals for Nirvana, he never really contributed any guitar or bass lines for the band..." "Kurt Cobain is dead and I'm damn happy about it." Just so you know, Dave only did drums and some vocals for Nirvana, he never really contributed any guitar or bass lines for the band, at least among the released stuff, dont know about all the unrealeased stuff hidden away by Cortney. But Dave was a badass drummer. Havent heard this yet, this score is simply for Nirvana and the songs Kurt wrote. To whoever said that Nirvana were "not the best musicians", your an idiot. First of all, Kurt Cobain could play some fucking badass guitar lines. Second, Dave Grohl can play bass, guitar, drums, and sing all very well, just listen to the first Foo Fighters album, cuz he plays everything on that CD and it rocks there's been two standout mainstream bands to really change the music world for the better, the beatles and nirvana. err, there has been loads of tribute albums released. ive seen at least 3 in my local record store over the past 6 or so years first of all, there seems to be a lot of girls redoing these songs. how strange. Kurt Cobain is dead and I'm damn happy about it. Last Chance from Jacksonville, FL did a fucking cool ass cover of 'Sliver' for a nirvana tribute to be out on VMS records (never saw the light of day) but you can hear it at http://www.mp3.com/skapunk - its the ex against all authority guy's band and it has his girlfriend singing the song. I haven't heard of any of these bands except Hotbox. I'll have to check this out, it sounds interesting. This score is for Nirvana. Hey little fuckin' wimps............Nirvana is better than your littel get up kids and new found glory wimpcore cds you fuckin' fools To the guy who said Sublime was bad early 90's ska...if you could join us here on earth it would be great. Sublime influenced many of your "good late 90's ska bands". In reality though ska doesnt get any better then Sublime. Their fame has nothing to do with Bradley's death, they fucking rocked. btw, Nirvana rocked too. Haven't hear the album, so ignore the score. Nirvana is and will always be one of the most influential bands in MY life, and probably in history. They are NOT famous because Kurt died, they are famous because they booted the music industry out of a pop-bubblegum crap era into the moody area that was the earlier 90s. I agree with Rob, bands with someone who die get terribly overrated. Like Nirvana, and Sublime especially. Bad early 90's ska! awesome man! OK so Nirvana definitley deserves a tribute album but I have to say that whoever that no name band is that re-did Smells like Teen Spirit most likely made a travesty of the most influental song to 90's rock/punk (I havent actually heard it yet). Its too bad Courtney Love is going to win the rights to Nirvana's songs because she is going to exploit the incredible talent and song writing of Kurt Cobain (who is a little overrated by the way) to make a couple of dollars to make up for those that Hole will never make just like this album is doing. Does anyone else agree that song rights should go to the remaining members of the band? Nirvana was a pretty great band, I remember when I first heard teen spirit when I was like 13 or something. Thier music open a whole new door for me and eventually I got influenced by punk rock. If it wasen't for Nirvana, god knows what I would be listening to today, probrably techno hip-hop or something. Overrated or not, they are very well appreciated in my book. I owe them alot. It's 'Sliver'dumbass! That's exactly why it was called 'Sliver'. nirvana and kurt cobain ARE overrated, if if kurt did commit suicide (dont even discuss that bullshit we dont need to go into it here) he did it because of major label traps, i think if a band member dies the band becomes bigger, nirvana really isnt that special anymore, its like if a member of blink 182 died tomorrow everyone 10 years from now will still think they are the greatest band ever, do i have to bring up led zepplin? fuck them, listen to bands that still make music or just starting to make music. and as for the album? as long as it does have a country screaming whinny singer like nirvana did its probably a better song Ask yourself this, "Did the world need TWO Weezer tribute albums?" If Weezer gets two, then Nirvana should have ten. Well, not really, but you get what I mean. I haven't heard this yet but it sounds interesting enough. Nirvana changed my life and got me into decent music and the punk scene and I bet a lot of people could say the same thing. "Kurt Cobain = THE most overrated musician in history." The people below this are clearly a bunch of 13 year olds with an IQ below 70. Does the world really need a Nirvana tribute album? Hahaha who cares about Nirvana nowadays? All I know is that they put a naked baby on the cover of "Nevermind" and it traumatized me. nirvana schirvanas all i can say. i like the last guy |
