Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

I was honestly anticapting this show quite a bit.. The Lawrence Arms is a band that I respect and enjoy alot, and I expected the show to be amazing....

The audience at the show was pretty dull.. Kids came with their parents (??) and older people went in just to get drunk.. which is kinda lame.. There was 0 moshing. The whole show consisted of people standing, staring and occasionally clapping.. Some humorous sights include seeing 13 year old teenie-bopper looking girls headbanging... An old parental woman who looked oddly enough like Sharon Osbourne.. and myself, being dropped on the first and only attempt at crowd surfing for the night.

Apparently there was another band that was supposed to play (The Saint Catherines, don't know if I spelt that correctly..) but either I missed them during my commute, or they didn't play...

The first band that played was The Break (or at least I think so..) and they were not that good in my opinion.. They were mildly decent, but they were overall not something I'd listen to. They had a cohesive sound, and they played well but the audience was pretty much dead which is something that really bothered me.. I mean, if I were in a band, and I was playing my ass off, I'd prefer to see the slightest bit of movement in the crowd..

Next up was The Exit.. They had an overall poppish sound and their songs sounded relatively the same to me (don't crucify me here..). The band really didn't exude much energy.. they pretty much stood around, played their stuff, and left. As I mentioned with the other band, the crowd was motionless.. Just the occasional "Woo!" and clapping.

Last up, was the band I anticapted greatly, The Lawrence Arms.. The proper word to sum up their set would be: Great. These guys were really great even though Brendan intially stated he and his bandmates had been drinking since 4PM and would probably sound like shit. Occasionally during their set, Brendan would throw his bass around wildly forcing it off of its strap.. He even smashed the tuning-thing into his forehead while playing.. As soon as the band finished the song he told the crowd that he was bleeding, and that he will continue to play so he could be hardcore like Danzig which was pretty funny. Brendan also mocked Dashboard Confessional during one of their songs. The band slowed the tempo and he began singing some lyrics from "Screaming Infidelities" but substituting lyrics and eventually saying that Dashboard makes music just to make money and fuck over fat girls. I know I am not divulging too much info on their set, considering I didn't snag their torn up list but I did have the oppurtunity to request "Corpses Of Our Motivations" and the band dedicated the song to me then ripped into it. Their set seemed a bit too short in my opinion, considering they only played about 8-10 songs, those songs (at least from what I remember) being: "Quincentuple Your Money", "Asa Phelps is Dead", "the Corpses of Our Motivations", "the First Eviction Notice", "Chicago is Burning", "100 Resolutions" and sadly thats all I remember.. They played a well-balanced set of old and new stuff.. Their set was hindered by the fact that there was no crowd particaption at all (moshing, crowd surfing, singing along) but other than that, they were better than I had expected.

Over all, It was a pretty bland show with Larry Arms being the saving grace.. If you haven't listened to them, please do yourself a favor and check out their stuff.

    I doubt anyone cares, but I tabbed out "Quincentuple Your Money" for bass. I submitted it to Punkhardcore (as I do with my other bass tabbings) and if anyone wants it before they actually post it, just let me know.

    Harsh, I didn't see the people dancing. I was with 2 other kids and we were just standing around and talking most of the time.

    Less Than Jake (Roseland)
    Warped Tour (Randalls Island)
    Big D And The Kids Table (The Temple)
    The Slackers/Toasters (somewhere in NYC)
    Plea For Peace (somewhere in NY)

    I'll also be at Warped Tour at Randalls Island.. probably revolving around the Alk3 Booth cause of Mike Park.

    As much as I dislike crowd surfers, it was pretty funny. I place it second on the comedy scale behind the guy and his girlfriend who were swing-dancing in the back of the room. Bizarre.

    Good review though. It's too bad the crowd wasn't into it. I was surprised that there weren't more people there. The Avail show at the Knitting Factory a couple months ago seemed to be sold out and the crowd, while not at the level of Wetlands in year's past, was pretty crazy. Perhaps that's not the best comparison to make though.

    The only redeeming quality of this show is the Larry Arms.

    The Exit is boring. They sound like the Police without any talent. And wyzo, you're right, he does look like the grown up version of Rufio.

    The Break are also incredibly boring and derivative. I've had their CD for review for a couple months but I can't find anything to say about it besides "it's all been done before, and better."

    TLA rocks my socks, though. "Quincentuple..." reigns.

    I agree with Wyzo's regarding crowd surfing. "Look at me, I'm surfing the crowd and kicking people in the head who are making the mistake of actually watching the band."

    I was at the NYC show and thought TLA put on a good performance, despite the lackluster crowd. I don't know what the hell SOYBOMB was trying to do as I was standing a few feet away and witnessed him try to surf over a bunch of people just standing there.

    moshing and crowd surfing is lame. Nothing says fun but being hit by someones foot or body weight as they 'body surf' the most selfabsorbed form of social dancing in the world. As soon as one guy gets down anothers up, and by the time they stop the sets over, and you dont remember a damn thing but having to turn around and shove some guys spine off your head. Moshing is just people who cant or dont want to try and dance and ruin it for everyone else who doesnt like elbows.

    However, I concur, their should have been dancing (slam dancing or otherwise).

    the guitarist of The exit looks like rufio from hook. Anyway, good review.

    I was at the Baltimore show as well. I'd have to say it was one of the best shows I've seen so far this year. Every band put on great show, most specifically in my opinion The Exit. They were constantly moving around, and the bassist was all over the stage. They are certainly not emo. I don't know what made you label them as that. Like I said above, every band put on a great show. The Saint Catherines were a very nice surprise.

    OH CHRIST KIDS YOU WILL CALL ANYTHING EMO. The Larry Arms are in NO way emo, not even with Chris's crystal clear voice. Jesus. I was at the Baltimore show a few days ago and they rocked the goddamn house. But of course they did. Bren was his comedian self, Chris and Neil seemed just plain drunk and they sounded amazing. I find it hard to believe 13 year olds were at an Arms show...but ok...And the Mom and Dad look alikes were just older fans i'm sure as the crowd at the Baltimore show was mainly 21 . The set list rocked with A Guided Tour of Chicago, An Evening of Blah blah, and Quincentuple taking the award of best songs. All In all everything the Arms are known to be...Drunk, Funny, Sexy, and Rock and roll.

    Thanks to the handy comments button, I could just add to the initial review..

    I said that The Exit had an overall poppish sound.. They were "emo".

    The Break was "pop punk".

    Lawrence Arms are "punk" with Brendan's unique vocals and almost "emo" with Chris's soft, almost soothing vocals.

    Hope that is a good clarification for those wondering how each band sounds.

    I'm sorry but that review could have been better. how come you didn't even bother to even try to describe the sounds of the bands?? some people dont know what those bands sound like so you should prolly try to do that next time.
