Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

So this was the big day, a chance to see the infamous transplants live. Rancid, being one of my favorite bands of all time, I was very excited to hear what tim's new project was gonna sound like.

The show started at eight, and so me and my buddy david got there by 7:00. As we were waiting in line talking to one of the local punks there, I saw my idol(well, not an idol, but you know) Matt Freeman. Having not enough courage to talk to him and say "what's up", instead I continue to wait in line not wanting to risk walking past the security guards. We also saw travis, but nobody really had any interest except for the two groupies in front of us trying to get his attention, it was funny.

Finally the doors open at 8:00. When we first got in, the surroundings had a very HOB(house of blues) type of vibe to it, the stage had curtains, very nice full bar, and small as hell. When you go to shows, most of you are probrably used to this procrastination when waiting for bands to play. And so, we waited yet again for about another hour, and when I was finally gonna lose my patience, the first band was about to start.

At 9:00 the first band came up, Pressure point. Now this was one of the bands that I have never of, but have heared good things about. This was one of your skinhead anti-racist type of band, and they were awesome! Probrably one of the most energetic acts of the night, thier set really impressed me, so much that I bought one of their 7" records. The main high point of that set was when they played a cover song from Agnostic front called "Power", and what was more cool was when Toby Morses from H2O came out to sing the song with them, that was rad.

After the well played set from Pressure point, I knew it was gonna get better. Next up was Transplants. When the curtain rose, everybody was all hyped up with the presence of tim and matt on stage. To my surprise there were 5 members. Tim on guitar, matt on bass, travis on drums, craig(from the forgotten) on guitar, and another person on vocals in which whom I’ve never seen before. When listening to the songs, I was so amazed of matt’s bass lines, there was one tune when he was just going crazy with his bass solo for like 30 to 40 seconds, incredible. I think it was some of his best work I heard so far. Not so much hip-hop or techno vibe to the music at all, except for the way tim was singing at some parts of the songs, if you consider that rapping. None the less, it was an energetic and solid performance. I was slamming so much, I almost over did myself, and could of fainted. One cool part of that set was when Lars from rancid came out unsuspectingly, to give a small praise to the Transplants. After hearing those songs, I couldn’t really say it was punk or it was hip-hop, but definitely there were many influences in the music that they made was very original. Can’t wait for the release in October.

So far I have seen some pretty good performances that night, and so now it was time for the closing act, the distillers. The distillers are a band that I have heard a few songs from, but not too much familiar with them still. After seeing the transplants, I guess I was suspecting a little more of them since they were the closing band, I was wrong. Their set was totally boring and so I didn’t think they were a real good live band. The chicks seem to like them, but I found myself yawning through their set. It’s sucks that I’ve heard so many good things from the distillers, but their performance didn’t seem to convince me at all. One funny part was when she stop the set for a minute because she needed to go pee, hmmm….girls. All in all, it was a pretty good show.

    seriously pat41. half the people hating the transplants i guarantee are basing it on nothing but the fact that 'a dude in blink is in it'. the other half are basing it on a live performance. whatever. i've seen rancid,alk3 and others suck live or been on off nights or been to drunk. grow up assholes. travis, hate him or not, is finally in a band that might let him truly showcase how good a drummer he is, isntead of pop punk. the transplants i havent heard, but i can'twait too. the best punk bassist, one of the best punk drummers, and one of the most creative and original guitarest/frontmen in tim.

    I cant believe people on here will admit to themselves that Tim Armstrong, the man you all live to praise with Rancid, and Matt Freeman, another Rancid punk god have put out something that sucks. I however think it will be a good record it is just surprising to see that some of the people on here have admitted to not liking something that punk 2 of their punk superheros have put out. Maybe its because Travis Barker is in it and we arent allowed to like anything that has a slight relation to blink 182. I guess maybe we werent getting more mature after all....-pat41

    If you ask me this reviewer gave me exactly what I wanted... insight into what the transplants sound like. I havent heard much about them and was really interested. From what I can tell they are going to kick some ass. This reviewer also gave me exactly what I wanted in not telling me about the distillers because they suck and I hate them... brodie is kinda sexy in a leathery punk sort of way... unexplainable really. I could care less about pressure Point or whatever I hear they suck ass anyway.-pat41

    i saw the distillers open for afi in autumn 2000, and they throw a great live set.

    and by the way, they were doing the gimmick where one of them leaves to pee right in the middle of the set back when i saw them ... i'm guessing they do that at every show.

    first 1.everyone can fuck themselves for trashing this review. write your own then u pieces of shit
    2.the transplants must suck cuz that dude from blink is in it oi oi oi! pressure point! well your an idiot, pressure point are a dime a dozen hellcat oi band and suck. if your over 16 or 17 maybe u will start to appreciate different forms of music. travis and freeman are both so talented, and tim is so spontaneous theres no way the transplants wont' be, if not amazing, then very interesting. its something new...something punks hate. just keep shoving that shitty oi 4 chord crap in their face and they'll be happy. fuck experimentation right? idiots.

    I completely disagree with the reviewer. Pressure Point blows and the Transplants are OK at best. I saw the same exact show at the Roxy, and I can't believe that was Tim's next project. The Distillers were the only band that actually rocked that Saturday night. They played an amazing, long set complete with a 2 song encore. Brodie has amazing stage presence, and Andy Outbreak and Ryan are to amazing musicians. The Distillers played with energy neither of the 2 other acts came even close too, and it was too bad the crowd was so damn lame (no movement, the pit was empty, and everyone there seemed like they were afraid of getting into it lest they break a sweat). Overall it was a decent show, not great. The Distillers are worth a listen, and I personally won't be waiting for the Transplants album in october, but i'm sure plenty will.

    I saw these bands at the HOB - Ana. and the trasplants were a big dissapointment. I can't believe that Tim and Matt who come from one of the best bands in the world play in such a terrible side project. The only good part of their set was when Lars came out. All they needed after that was to bring Brett out and than we would of seen a great show, but they didn't. They were a big dissapointment, but the distillers put on a good show.

    you shouldn't be able to submit such garbage for people to waste their time reading...first of all, learn the singer's name...second of all, i don't care when you got there or how long you waited or the fact that you worship the ground matt freeman walks on to the point of not being able to introduce yourself...it is a show review, not a diary entry of your night...

    sounds like a good show. I like the Distillers though. Brody and Co. tend to rock the house.
