Remember when ska was the big thing back in 1996? Thats ok, neither do I. It just wasn't worth getting into ska because any effort put into it would be shot down when ska wasn't trendy anymore. 1996 was my sophomore year of high school and I was desperate to be the cool kid and would be into anything trendy (it didn't work)... but ska never worked for me. I never got into No Doubt, Smash Mouth, Reel Big Fish or any other band that made it "big" because of the ska explosion. Review fucking blows. this review sucks shit. score is for the band. I know I'm commenting way after the review but I recently got this record and it's fuckin brilliant - "Find Out" isn't a song per se but it's fuckin funny - "Stevie Wonder, he wonder what she looks like", but the majority of songs on this are brilliant, especially "Checklist", "Wailing Paddle" and "Those Kids Suck" Big D are without a doubt the best ska band ever. Through the trendy times, and the not so trendy times, these guys have stayed true to their roots and do what they absolutely love, for that they deserve a gold metal and a half. I Can't wait for the new Cd to come out Big D aren't from Quebec. They're from Boston. Aren't Big D from Quebec? Some scenes from the video "The Difference" were filmed in the streets of montreal. The best ska is made in Quebec at Chez Ashton. Wait, maybe that's poutine. This shit is so fuckin groovin', it oozes ska-core. Get it and die happy. I never heard Big D and I dont wanna. The best ska is made in Quebec. Ska punk has nothing to do what trad ska. Planet Smashers and Kingpins rules I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings. I wish to extend hugs and kisses and stuffed animals and chocolate candy to anyone who was upset. I don't like ska much. Neither do the guys at warner bros, that's why they own 51% of epitaph & not some crummy ska label. This isn't coming out for another month in Europe damn it! Checklist is my favourite from the ones i've heard. it annoys me when people slam other peoples reviews .... I mean they tried they best Who is giving shit... I think enough people have received enough shit about turning emo after being into ska. The second half of the review wasn't bad. I thought it was a pretty good review.. I've been fortunate to see these guys which is nice because not many bands come to ottawa. I thought they put on an amazing live show, and the lyrics on the gypsy hill lp are amazing (especially scenester). I hope these guys keep making good music like their previous cds, big d fuckin owns. just to point out. Wailing Paddle is a cover of (one of the best bands ever) the Rudiments. and New England is a cover of a Johnathan (sp?) Richman song...he was in the modern loves, a proto punk band with guys from the cars...etc. Also. I LOOOOOVE Big D. I LOOOOOVE this CD. But someone needs to get their asses touring outside of New England! Big D (as I've said before) is a band I hold dear to my heart.. What grounds were big d breaking when they wrote this album. I agree they put on a fucking amazing live show and that they are fucking crazy ass ska punk band but I dont see any new ground being tread upon with this album, at least nothing that they didnt do in good luck. This is my second favorite album of the year behind the new bosstones album and i dont see how any of the information i gave was innacurate.. except the whole 8 years thing that was my bad. Oh and I apologize for giving background information on my experience with ska and the way that Big D and the Kids table didnt go with the trend and move on to soemthing new. Sorry I respect Big D for keeping real to their music. Sorry for giving my opinion and telling my story... which is what this site is all about and what punk is all about... having an opinion of your own. Who cares what the fuck you did at highschool - Big D is awesome, they put on a more punk show then 9/10ths of the punk bands I've ever seen. Talk about energy. Worst review ever. Big D does rule. It is not worthy of 2 paragraphs to state that they are ska. Also, aside from the mathematical error (let's see you were a sophmore in high school in 1996 and you still can't do subtraction) there is another error. Saying they do nothing groundbreaking is definitely not true. We are talking about a band of 8 or so (how ever many members they have these days) guys who graduated from the prestigious Berkeley College of Music, and then applied this knowledge towards making ska and punk music all while putting on an absolutely insane live show. THAT IS GROUNDBREAKING. Oh yea and by the way, sorry about the math error. I knew it was supposed to be 6 years I must have just typed it wrong... just like the other spelling and grammar errors in my review. Also I definitley consider a lot of Tragic Kingdom ska and that was probably the biggest album at the height of the ska craze. True there is a lot of plain old pop-rock on it but whenever you mention the ska craze you have to mention No Doubt.-pat41 They were actually a ska-punk band believe it or not. Smash Mouth was a ska band? I have never considered a split cd a full length despite how many songs are on it. They dont have 15 songs on Shot by Lammi like you said but there is 11. I never got the news on how many considers it a full length but I guess that could be considered a full length if you wanted. -pat41 (PS drexel rules too!) I love this EP. I do think they distinguish themselves from other ska bands. I don't really like that many ska bands cause usually I'm bored after 2 songs, but this EP is just actionpacked and it never bores me. It's a shame that they still haven't found a record label they release their stuff. Fork In Hand is the record label of Steve the bassplayer. Not that I really care, but No Doubt had already stopped playing ska when it got big. Good review, but I don't think there's anything on this record to distinguish them from the rest of the bands still playing ska/punk these days. Great live band, but average songwriting. you failed to say that they did a split with Drexel i count it as a full album becouse Big D has like 15 songs on it. BIG RULES Not to be a dick, but eight years later would be 2004. Oh yeah, and I don't think math nerds (like me) should be allowed to post comments on people who are only trying to write a decent review. |
