Okay, if anyone was still doubting the commercial appeal of the current emo/pop-punk/hardcore trend, let this compilation put your worries to rest. Just a few years ago, this CD would've been crammed by MTV with the latest in nu-metal/rape-rock. In 2002, this CD reads as a list of who's hot in the music world right now. A tracklisting, for your perusal:
1. Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World
2. Understanding in a Car Crash - Thursday
3. A Box Full of Sharp Objects - The Used
4. The Nephilim - AFI
5. The Fallacy of Retrospective Determinism - The Rise
6. Take Me Away - Unwritten Law
7. See You in the Shallows - Thrice
8. The Boy's Republic - Deftones
9. Something More - Sinch
10. Jude Law and a Semester Abroad - Brandnew
11. Saints And Sailors - Dashboard Confessional
12. An Agreement Called Forever - 36 Crazyfists
13. Engine - Haste
14. Pieces - Hoobastank
15. Bring It Low - The Juliana Theory
16. 33 - Coheed And Cambria
17. Something I Call Personality - New Found Glory
18. All Rise - Jersey
19. You Know How I Do - Taking Back Sunday
20. Walking on Glass - The Movielife
21. Overdue - The Get Up Kids

All I have to say is wow - sure, Roadrunner snuck a few of their shit bands on there [Sinch, I'm looking in your direction], but overall it's a pretty solid compilation of some of the most popular names in the scene right now. I'm still in shock that this is being sponsored by MTV - the co-opting of our scene is complete. Anyway, you didn't come here for a diatribe about ethics, you came for a review, and a review you shall get.

All the songs on this compilation that I really like are ones I already own on the band's respective albums. But a CD like this isn't for me - this is a primer for kids just getting into this form of music. The big names like Hoobastank are there to attract the kids right away, and then Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional assure them that they want to buy this. Once they do, they'll be exposed to a world of decent-to-really good music, with only a few duds [again, Sinch, I'm looking in your direction].

So why should a jaded scenester like yourself buy this? Well, there are a few perks: The Unwritten Law song is a previously unreleased tune from their "S/T" sessions a few years back. The Deftones song is also previously unreleased. And if you're into them, the Juliana Theory contributes a brand new song that will presumably be on their major label debut this fall. All three tracks are really good songs, and probably some of the best on the CD overall [even the Juliana Theory song - I despise that band and I still dug the song; it's a lot heavier than the band's prior stuff].

This CD isn't bad for what it is, and as a mix CD it's a little above par [just skip over the 36 Crazyfists/Haste/Hoobastank trio - you'll thank me]. I can't say I'd recommend this to many of you, but if you have siblings/friends who are just discovering the wonderful world that is "left of the dial," this wouldn't be a bad CD to have them get their feet wet to.

In the new Alternative Press there is a little article about all the punk bands signing to majors this year. They have a quote from a major label guy saying something like "If your goal as a band isnt to sell a million records, then you should not be on a major label" there you go.

For a person who doesnt care about what people say or when they fuck with him, boston music pat 41 has sure posted often and in great amount about how he is not a possur and tried to explain away the 41 refferance, although i dont think basketball will win you any fans in punk, also just cause you live close to a city and you love does not make you from that city. I live near St Louis and i love that city, but i dont consider my self from it, or would include it in my name on a website.

hey bostonmusicguy/pat41- how can you be all about boston.. when that city has pretty much outlawed 'all ages' shows?!

secondly- have you ever lived in (or in your case, near) another major city?!
boston is an alright town to visit on occasion but everything closes super early and 18 shows suck!

    cities better than boston:
    new york
    toronto
    montreal
    chicago
    philadelphia

this has nothing to do with sports so dont take it there okay?!

Even worse: Theory of a Deadman. Anyone heard these guys yet? Everyone keeps talking about how they are the biggest "buzz" band right now. Complete and utter crap. Sounds exactly like Days of the New which sounds exactly like Creed who try to sound exactly like Pearl Jam. How the fuck can there be a "buzz" about a band that sounds like a million other bands? God damn. When will the madness ever end? Oh yeah Puddle of Pisss sucks too. Thanks a lot Fred Durst. Like we didn't hate you enough before you unleashed that crapp on us. Die Die Die...

just like AFI...they are on dreamworks... can´t wait till the elton john/afi split comes out... how dumb is that??? they are labelmates of elton john...think about it once more..."
Well I'm sure the bands are all dying to apologize for actually wanting to get their music out and make money. Music is great- it's life. And if someone can make money doing what they love, why not? That's like telling a teacher "Oh, you can only teach at a shitty little school otherwise you don't really love it." It's bullshit. Screw being "punk." They've worked for it, whether they suck or rock.

"What's up with Thrice being EVERYWHERE anymore, Christ they're even on Madden Football 2003."
Thrice DESERVE to be everywhere. They're an awesome group of talented guys, and I'm glad that they've gotten their music out of Orange County and into the houses of people all over the US.

OK, Im sorry I am not actually from the city of Boston physically. But I do consider my self a person of Boston. I love Boston. It is the greatest city in the world as far as I am concerned. I couldnt have chosen a better place to live and be a punk fan. I highly doubt that you actually have much pride in the city of Boston, as not many people in the punk scene do. But being "from" Boston and being Irish and having a father that loves the city of Boston as much as I do, hence forth teaching me alot about the great city, give me the right to call myself the BostonMusicGuy. Anyway, yea, I have a question for everybody at this site...Can you tell me why it bothers you so much that rap-rock, nu-metal, boy bands, and rap are so popular. For people with supposedly open minds you really dont give much else a chance... and if you do give it a chance and you dont like it you calim that it is horrible and no one should listen to it because its so bad. That doesnt sound like an open mind to me... but then again, I listen to Sum41.... fucking morons...-BostonMusicGuy

corporate sellout dexter holland spending his cash on nitro records to bring us awesome bands = awesome

so maybe these bands will realize what they've done? Give a little back? Okay - I'm dreaming, but it's sooooo infinately better then the sellout kids listening to that Nu-Metal shit and RapRock. I mean, this shit may suck, but at least it doesnt make my ears bleed

OK, maybe no one else likes to read another review or you would have gotten the whole story on the origin of my former name. Ever since the first day I picked up a basketball and played in my first game at the YMCA in haverhill I have been number 41. A couple of years I was different numbers but if I was ever given the chance to pick my own number I chose 41. It is true that I was a sum 41 fan. A huge one. They bore me a little bit now but I am still a fan. I was never looking for a random number to put after my name if I was looking to put a random number I probably would have picked something like 99 or 88 or 990090 (my school ID # in high school), my old screen name was actually Fols164 (which was how far I threw the javelin in high school). Now that I have written the Sum 41 review and have (obvioulsy) been associated with sum 41 for the rest of my life because of that review I have tried to stray from that a little bit by trying to give myself a new name. Not that I care what the hell you people think of me but that I cant stand the fact that my entire credibility at punknew relies upon the fact that I listen to sum 41 and had 41 in my name. So now, in tribute to my favorite internet reporter, The Boston Sports Guy (who writes for Page 2 @ Espn.com, I have changed my name to the BostonMusicGuy as most of my favorite bands hail from Boston (DKM, Bosstones, Big D, Piebald) as do I (well 30 minutes North of Boston in a little town called Haverhill). So now that you know the story, keep telling me I am a liar, keep telling me I am a poser... whatever you want to tell me keep it coming because I couldnt really give 2 shits what yuou think about me. Just dont write off my comments and opinions automatically just because I used to be pat41, and because I enjoy Sum 41's music. I am sure all of you have a guilty pleasure of some sort in the Music Industry.Oh yea... the guy that works for me and says that my favorite song is Fat Lip can suck a nut... Yea I work with him, no my favorite song is not Fat Lip, and yes he did admit to me one day that he made out with 2 guys before in his life... Not that theres anything wrong with that...Ahhhh Seinfeld....-BostonMusicGuy

Juliana Theory are just a mediocre emo-pop band -- they're far from groundbreaking, yet far from being awful... their EP, "Music From Another Room" does, in fact, suck balls, but "Emotion is Dead" has some pretty cool songs on it, and their song on this MTV comp IS a good song, which actually has me looking forward to their upcoming CD.

So Pat41, go back to listening to your Sum 41 and Hoobastank.

First and foremost, it fucking offends me to think that people can be so narrow minded and ignorant that they can't admit when they are wrong.

Black Flag kick(ed) fucking ass. Comparing Ginn to Hendrix is retarded. The band still tore shit up and set trends and broke bones. They were classic. Without them, punk rock would not be the way it is today.

Thursday kick fucking ass. Their songs are leagues ahead of the generic, uninspired bandwagon scene whores that have latched on to their sound and burned it into the ground. They are technical, rhythm oriented, and the lyrics are introspective and poetic.

Both bands are good at what they do. That should be enough for all the people on this board. They both rock. Both bands have talent. The difference is that Thursday are still around now, writing music and playing from the heart. Black Flag imploded. And for the most part, the Black Flag sound is dead. I imagine musicians just got tired of playing simple music. And don't try and tell me Black Flag songs are complicated, by any means.

Lastly, comparing the from Thursday singer to Jordan from NFG is childish and stupid. They both sing in a higher register. Big fucking deal. The lyrics are nothing alike, and their projection and tones are nothing alike. NFG are good at what they do. They're just a radio band. The songs are catchy. Why bother with classifications? Only morons attempt to take trivial differences between bands and trump them up to determine if they've sold out or not.

All I care about is the music I hope all these bands take over this nu metal #### and boy bands. So the world doesnt have to keep listening to dumb overproduced music. And Thursday may sound a little like other bands but they are still pretty original. I could link most bands to a band they sound like and say they copied them. They are still just a bunch of faceless pop bands. The Ramones and Black Flag were different from everyone else. Black Flag went on and changed their music to avoid sounding like everyone else, something none of the bands on this comp have done, or will likely ever do, because if they do, they won't be accepted and make money. That's's what separates Black Flag from these idiots, they took chances.

    My Score:

Okay, okay, this is my last post, I swear. But we all do get the facts, right? Let me go over the scenario again, since I have no friends, no one to talk to, and nowhere to go.

Okay, let's say you want a name to call yourself on the Internet. Let's say your name is Joe. Well you want to add a number to the end of your name, just for shits and giggles. You are thinking of numbers. Hm, well... Your dad is 41, and "#41" is also the name of your favorite Dave Matthews Band song (on the awesome album, "Crash", which I recommend dearly). So you are thinking, "41 is a great number!". But then you suddenly remember that Sum 41 is a popular band. Since you don't want to be associated automatically as a Sum 41 fan, as you aren't one, you decide just to give up the number, even though your dad is still 41 and "#41" is still an awesome DMB song. But it's not worth the complications of being labelled as a Sum 41 fan. So in a few minutes, you have your new Intenet name: Joe56.

Now that we have read Joe's situation, let's look at Pat's situation. Though we all already know the obvious fact that Pat has always been a Sum 41 fan, and named his online name after the band, let's give him some benefit of the doubt. This is America, right. Actually, fuck that! Its impossible! Even if Pat did originally want a random number, its obvious that since he IS a fan (click anywhere to see his 4 star Sum 41 review), he would have been confronted with the issue of whether or not he wants a name that looks like it is referencing Sum 41. So his name just wouldn't be Sum 41! Simple human logic! I know we all think differently, but come on. This general logic applies to most, and I am sure we can agree that this logic would apply to Pat. So anyway, Pat knew what he was getting into from the start. He named himself Pat41, after Sum 41. You can read his 4 star review by clicking on this text. Also, Sum 41 WAS big enough when Pat assumed this identity. So it is not like he made this name before he heard of them. I think we all get this case.

Bottom line, we all know that PAT41 IS A LIAR! THIS IS SO A SUM 41 INSPIRED NAME! Thank you.

PS CLICK HERE! (to see Pat's Sum 41 review, where he gave them 4 stars.)

    Dear Pat41,

You are the one who put a 4 star review of Sum 41 in the archive.

Read it yourself and don't tell me your name did not stem from Sum 41.

    http://www.punknews.org/reviews.php?op=albumreview&id=212

When a band is as big as Sum 41, and you are making User Names with numbers, even if you weren't a fan you would realize that the number 41 would be associated with the band, Sum 41. At that point, most would decide to use a different number. However, with the above review, it is obvious that you ARE a fan. Don't tell me it was coincidence. God, it is hilarious how you are such a liar!

Person below. You are a fucking idiot. You completely missed the fact that people don't call something gay meaning "happy" or even "homosexual". They mean "bad" or "dumb". The word simply doesn't mean either of those two things. It isn't about being politically correct. It is about being CORRECT. Furthermore, it is hurtful and hateful. Being politically correct isn't about not being hurtful or hateful. It is about fitting in with the political norm and being as non-offensive as possible. However, PC makes it all right, even very good, to blame everything on straight white males (in an attitude that does this towards individuals). Yes, slavery, AIDS, anthrax, and child kidnappings are all my pale asses fault. My bad.

and fuck all those bands too! they´re in it for the cash and want to make money! I don´t care where they come from, all I know is they want to be the next big thing...
just like AFI...they are on dreamworks... can´t wait till the elton john/afi split comes out... how dumb is that??? they are labelmates of elton john...think about it once more...

Attention everyone: According to some jackass, Thursday has more talent than Wire, The Stooges, Black Flag and The Minutemen (as well as many others). You heard it here first.

The Ramones and Sex Pistols were on major labels. I guess they are not punk according to most people that frequent this site. Shame, I liked the Ramones...but now I see the error of my ways and will no longer like them for it.

Sure, Jimmy Eat World might not be punk, But calling something "Gay" as an insult sure is!! Good job.

"The punk bands of the seventies, early 80's, on in to the 90's have never been as talented as Thursday..."

I am equally shocked and humored that someone would claim thursday has more talent than anyone before them.
if thursday werent an 'at the drive-in' ripoff.. i might think they had talent.

regardless- your statement leads me to believe you don't listen to very good music.. or in the very least havent been listening to what you call 'punk' for very long.

okay, maybe its me, but hoobastank (to my knowledge) always sounds like incubus. They have videos that copy incubus' and they suck almost as bad as incubus (AKA: Backstreet boys on ice [with guitars {who suck man boobs!}])... also, people really need to stop referring to Jimmy Eat World as punk. I've heard a number of their songs and have yet to hear one even as punk as New Found Glory, who make the gayest poppiest bullshit EVER!

    Hmm...
I don't guess there's much to say about the album and the bands on it... since I haven't heard it.. but have enjoyed many of these bands for the past three to four years. Listen, about the corporate stink, so on and so forth... get real. The punk bands of the seventies, early 80's, on in to the 90's have never been as talented as Thursday, as wonderfully melodic as Jimmy Eat World. There's is no reason why these bands shouldn't be on major labels, and making money... if you are good enough... then you deserve everything that is given to you. Don't be so hard on bands... these bands are fortunate to be heard. It could mean break through... it could get them what they deserve.

i love the juliana theory they may just be one of my favorite bands along with sparta fairweather recover and well alota other stuff that may be 2 cool for some of u but is still not mainstream rock yet, well sparta is on a major so. anways juliana theory plays some of the most unique rock music out their the songs on their alblum differ so greatly and singer bret detar has an awsome voice i love that they draw alota influence from 70s rock bands and i rember back in teh day punkrocks.net called them the modern day pink floyd maby their just not your personal taste but they are awsome pat41 and whoever else thinks they suck balls and this comp how the hell did coheed and cambria get on this 3 months ago i swear no one heard of them i went to a show and no one knew any of their stuff though the crowd really dug their live preformance but i have no idea how they got onto an mtv comp so quickly

Don't kid yourself about this cd containing any indie label bands. And you people need to stop bitching about how these underground bands are on these corporate kicks. No one forced them to put their shit on this comp. They want they money so they gave them a right to put their stuff on it. Your "underground" bands seem to like going up the ladder now.

To jheisel [also known as my brother],
the following bands on this CD are on independent labels:
    The Rise
    Brand New
    Coheed and Cambria
    Jersey
    Taking Back Sunday
    The Movielife [sorta]
    Get Up Kids [sorta]
That ain't bad, for an MTV comp.

To ejaculine - I thought I had the first pressing of "White Pony" [it's a silver cover with the silouhette of the horse in the corner] - am I wrong?

I would just like to say that the line, "I'm still in shock that this is being sponsored by MTV - the co-opting of our scene is complete," is one of the funniest things I have ever heard. MTV is not co-opting any scene - none of the bands on here are underground; to the best of my knowledge they are all on majors or uber-majors. I'm fairly confident that people who buy this because it's MTV aren't going to be showing up at Yaphet Kotto shows any time soon, just as soon as I'm certain that anyone who buys this for mostly previously-released songs from shit artists doesn't have any business in the 'scene' in the first place.
