Street Dogs - State of Grace

It is a rare occasion to walk into the metro for a show with absolutely no expectations. Prior to the show last Friday, (9/27/02) all I knew about any of the bands I was seeing was that Sparta contained former members of the band At the Drive-In. The least I can say about my concert experience was that I was amazed.

Small Brown Bike opened the show quite fittingly. I can only assume that in the eyes of the band they gave a good, solid set that night, but the crowd had very minimal response. It could have been because the lead singer really never sang, he merely shouted every lyric. I have no doubt this band has talent and promise, but I don't think shouting at your audience for a half an hour wins too many people over.

The next band to take the stage was Cave-In. They preformed an amazing eight-song set that really got the crowd moving. Their set was packed to the brim with straight-foward, no bullshit, solid rock. It was quite impressive, they definetely exceded many expectations. They are a talented bunch and they know it.

Next up on the bill was the band everyone was waiting for, Sparta. By this point, the Metro crowd was in great anticipation for the grand finale as they swayed and figgeted in place. Finally the lights went out and the band stepped out onto the floor. From that moment on the rock did not stop. The energy in the house would not die out, not even during a five minute intermission to fix a guitar. The crowd cheered and jumped with such joy that was truly not expected. No one got bored for a second during Sparta's set. The response to every song in the power-packed, 12 song set was amazing. This rock quartet really knows what they're doing. The show was nothing less than spectacular.

Sparta set: Sans Cosm, Mye, Red Alibi, Vacant Skies, Cataract, Collapse, RX Coup, Light Burns Clear, Assemble the Empire, Glasshouse Tarot, Cut Your Ribbon, Air

personally its my favorite thing in the world when a band makes the same cd a half a dozen times just so they can justify using the same name.

    My Score:

The Clash on Sandinista sounded ZERO like they did on self-titled, should they have changed their name? Black Flag on In My Head sounded ZERO on the early EPs, should they have changed their name? Bands should change, props to Cave In for having the guts to do it in a scene that scemes terrified of change. Drastic change is better than making the same album over and over to appease a target audience. And they should damn well keep their name so that they can keep everything they worked so hard to get.. Like I said, maybe they thought people would support them so long as they continued to make good music, which they do. As for Pink Floyd, sorry pal, but you're missing out on some great music. And as for them playing a mix of both, it would sound weird to me for them to be playing both. The metal songs would just sound out of place. And like I said before, Steven will lose his voice if he keeps screaming.

    Hamish,

First off...Huge Pink Floyd fan? That's enough to discredit you altogether...

As for the metal vs. FLoyd debate-I went and saw Cave In around "Creative" and they played a blend of both...KInd of a cross-over period for the band, and it worked for me..And most of the people there...

Closed minded is the wrong term..Well, maybe for most "hardcore kids", but that's not me....I just think if you are gonna, basically, change the face of the music, you should change the name of the band..They sound ZERO like they used to...Think about it, man.

these bands were better the first time I heard them, when they were called at the drive-in, radiohead, and hot water music

I chose Dillinger Four/Toys That Kill/Hot Carl/Rivethead/Preacher Gone To Texas/Exercise in Rock Island, instead.

It was a good choice [although I do love all 3 bands, I didn't want to spend 6 hours in a car driving total].

Why would he change the name of the band? There were no line-up changes between Until You Heart Stops and Jupiter (or did they changes bassists? I forget, either way, 1 member change doesn't mean too much). Why should they throw away something they worked so hard to establish? I guess they assumed that people would be open-minded enough to support them even if they changed their sound (so long as it was still good music). I guess they were wrong, shows how narrow minded most of their old fans are.

As for the "bad Pink Floyd" comments, yes they were influenced by Pink Floyd, but they don't sound like them. Take any Cave In song and tell me what Pink Floyd song it sounds like. Answer: none. And this is coming from a huge Floyd fan.

    Hey Hamish....

Maybe Brodksy should have changed the name of the band if he was gonna change the sound so radically....?

Oh, that would be like starting over and making it legit....

Old Cave In rules the metallic wasteland...New stuff can eat a bucket of Pink Floyd/Radiohead cocks...Change the name of the band, Chowderhead!

Posted by Hamish on 2002-10-06 13:28:29
    My Score:

Yeah, you sure are right guy below me, Cave In changed their sound *just* so they could play with Sparta and SBB. Not because Steven Brodsky found out he was going to lose his voice if he kept screaming. Not because he wanted to play music other than metal. It was really because he wanted to tour with Sparta and SBB. You sure are smart. "Bad Pink Floyd?" Maybe you need to listen to that shit again. It has more depth and substance than just about any band playing today. Who cares if they stopped playing metal? Look, I like the metal stuff too, but better a band change their sound and play what they want to play than making the same record over and over again so that they don't piss of "scenesters."

"Get the fuck out of my scene!" What a baby.

    My Score:

    ok.. here's the real problem...

cave in changed their sound to play with bands like small brown bike and sparta.. (well i know sparta is newer but you get the picture right).. cave in was one of the best crust/hc bands ever and now they sound like a bad pink floyd.

another problem.. (i like sbb, sparta, and old CI) this shit should never be in clubs like metro.. fuck that shit.. fuck it all to hell.. this pisses me off more than anything else.. and what sucks even more is all you idiots belive (or act) like this is ok.. fuckers.. get the fuck out of my scene!!!

This review sucked, get a personality.. Trying doing some homework on the bands. Sparta is good, SBB is great (listen to collections), Cave-in Blows. If I want pink floyd crap I'll listen to pink floyd. Cave-in is for white cap jocks trying to get into punk rock. College crap.

to be honest, i like all three of these bands and would've been glad to be at this show just at the mention of their names together, but let's be honest, and get to the real point, this was a sorry ass excuse for a review... i mean, no offense to the reviewer or anything, it just sucked, he needs to work on his review skills

i think wyzo is talking about the "music industry machine" behind these guys. ATDI got so well connected in the industry that these people are representing their new bands. the real heros are the managers and press agents hired by these guys to promote them. they could make my grandmother a rock star.

what it comes down to is that it has little to do with the music. it's all about who you know. i mean jesus, the mars volta is touring with the red hot chili peppers next year and the mars volta don't even have a full length record out yet. now try and tell me that it's about the music?

Glad to hear this was a good show. There were like 4 pretty big shows this day. Local H and Lucky Boys (ewww) at UIC, Catch 22 and Mest (ewww) at HOB, Sparta (yay!) and Cave-In (yay!) at the Metro, and The Stereo (whooo!) at the fireside. I chose the fireside show which had less than 150 people there. It rocked mucho. But if the stereo wasn't playing that night i'd have seen Sparta yo.

To argue which bands should've headlined is ridiculous. All 3 bands are awesome (especially SBB) but the truth is, Sparta is bigger because of their name and thier label. I'm not at all surprised at the order. It was one of the best shows @ the Metro in a long time!

Hey, I like sparta and saw them play in a closet sized club, but their really not that rocking, even though the songs all come off better live. "

So wyzo, which is it? Do Sparta rock by themselves or do they need hired hands? What did mentioning Dreamworks have to do with anything? Just curious.

Sparta headlined over Cave In? Both of these bands played after Small Brown Bike? Lame. SBB destroys both of those wack bands. (Yeah, I said wack. I'm down with the lingo of the streets. Word.) Cave In may be good but they're still wankers.
