"Jet Black New Year" may be the best song I've ever bought.

It's been a long time for these guys hailing from New Jersey to release a record. Last year their debut full length succeeded in creating a stellar release. Its was witty and original despite the cries of a copy cat version of At the Drive In. Getting to the top ten list of several people it won its spot as a exceptional cd. Now the waiting is over as this new cd will be the last on Victory for the soon to be major labelers, but who wants a five song ep with four live tracks and one new song. One new moment to enjoy the young talented band. One song. One chance to prove Thursday is truly a machine out of control.

As I was saying there are four live tracks consisting of your favorites: "Autobiograghy of a Nation," Understanding in a Car Crash," "Standing on the Edge of Summer," and the always intense "Paris in Flames." In whole these songs are well recorded live songs. At a few points in the disc you can't hear whats being said, but of course that is live folks take it or leave it.

Understanding in a Car Crash is sang a little faster at times then normal which gives you more of the live feel. Another point about the live songs would be an unusual part at the end of Understanding in a Car Crash where the music kind of changes and new lyircs are added. A short but excellent addition.

The moment everyone is waiting for, and the main reason people will puchase this record. The song "Jet Black New Year" just became my favorite Thursday song. Why? Because its different, innovative, moving, extremely intense, and plain fucking amazing. This song is quite possibly worth all ten dollars I dished out for this record, and if this is going to be the new Thursday then they are on their way to being a band of influence if not already. The first part of the song is a fast palm muted riff, with the drums kicking in seconds later with a swift break neck pace. It builds up into one of the sweetest intros I've ever heard. When the vocals start up they are sung loud over the music with layered guitars. The singing echos which puts you in a trance. The part that is the best about hsi song is the screaming chant of "jet black." Its quite possibly the most chilling scream I have heard.

I gave Full Collapse last year five stars and a lot of rotation. This cd exceeds my expectations for a five song ep with blasting live tracks and one new song. One new moment to enjoy the young talented band. One song. One chance to prove Thursday is truly a machine out of control. One song that blew up my world.

    My Score:

saw them last night at irving plaza and they really impressed me... their new track sounded unbelievable live but i'm not sure i'll plunk down ten bucks for this ep. especially since victory was giving these guys the royal screwjob after they initially got signed and didn't even want to spend the money to print their lyrics for the cd and now they've just went out of their way to put out the full collapse enhanced special edition cd seeing as how they stand to profit from a quickly dying trend... then again i've spent more for worse and it's not really the band's fault that their label is weak...

and hey while i'm at it, one thing i really liked about their set last night was that they didn't do and encore and made a point to say how they didn't really believe in the whole encore thing but would like to just add a couple tracks to the end of their set... if it's one thing i hates it's waiting for the band to come back for an encore... it's sooo friggin lame... i mean when the houselights don't come on after a band leaves a stage you know they're coming back and yet all these people always go nuts anyway as if its their cheers that are gonna bring the band back and not the fact that they intended to come back all along... thank you thursday for saving me the ten minute wait, i had a long drive back to jersey

    My Score:

uh ok i've never posted on this before so be patient.
I can't believe Thursday got away with this marketing scheme for all you scenester kids out there. They charge you 10 dollars for one new track which is pretty mediocre(i'll get to that) and a bunch of live tracks to prove to all the die hard fans how "raw" they are. No matter what your lips stay tightly wrapped around Geoff's phallus. While the rest of you clean the food between the huge gap in his teeth. Ridiculous.
This just seems like blashphemy, as if a band who honestly gives a shit about putting out good music would try this retard shit. I would figure the biggest fans would join in with the nay sayers to reject this gift wrapped peice of shit. Contractual obligation or not they could have just rereleased the first album or put out a greatest hits album at least let the good people know that your just trying to move in on to bigger and better pay checks.
I've seen the band live and all the overwhelmingly cute heart felt, hard core indie stage presence was nothing short of rehearsed. The overall sound of the band was good, although they looked like they might be posing for a hot topic ad. Geoff on the other hand looked like an emo Jim Morrison with hand gestures that would make even the most flaming homosexual shriek in jealousy. I think he might have even stolen some moves from Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo. It was a show alright, a show put on not out of honest feeling and intense performance but put on two make all you kids go buy a 10 dollar e.p. with one new track.
As for this new jem. I've heard the recording and I heard it live on the Plea for Peace a few days ago. The only thing I really liked about the thing was the guitar part and they generally have good guitar parts in the songs thanks to that big fat guy who sits in the back of the stage and just plays the songs. kudos to him. You can tell he is the brains of the operation. Geoff sounds pretty flat and the screaming of Jet Black sounds like the Old Woman demon on Evil Dead 2. horrible.
I've got to say i like the cover art on the ep. It might look artsy but it shows them for who they truly are thats for sure. mannequins how perfect. pehapr you could find the same dolls in your local hot topic. They are the New Kids on The Block of the heart-core scene. I wonder if the keyboard player is more like Jordan or Donny. Oh well I could go on but i'd rather not. enjoy.
    the voice of reason

    My Score:

I never really liked Thursday. With all the hype surrounding them since the release of Full Collapse I figured I would pick up the aforementioned LP. I thought it blew. I still think it blows. They sound like At the Drive-In with a singer who can't stay in key.

Then I listened to their latest effort "Five Stories Falling", and something clicked. There's an undeniable energy about the live tracks that really draws me in. It seems to me that singer Geoff Rickley's voice has really improved (even though the chorus is shrieked out of key on "Standing on the Edge of Summer") from Full Collapse, which especially shows on the new track "Jet Black New Year".

"Paris in Flames" and "Autobiography of a Nation" are the standout live tracks on the EP especially when they scream the opening lines of the disc, "WRITE THESE WORDS BACK DOWN!"

The studio track is nothing short of breath taking. If this is the new Thursday, I'm listening. They have definitely grown as a band and adopted a harder, more concentrated sound.

One of my major problems with their sound before was that it seemed as though they were trying too hard to have weird breakdowns, and most of the time they didn't fit.

Like in Cross Out the Eyes when they try to break down into "it was the first time face to face" it seemed as though they forgot what song they were playing, only to launch back into the screamed chorus of "CROSS OUT THE EYES!". Do I like it when bands try different things? Yes. I am not saying bands shouldn't branch out and try things like Thursday has done in the past, but I always thought that the conception and the execution by thursday never quite matched up. Like they wanted it to come out a certain way and they missed horribly.

They succeed everywhere they used to fail with the new song "Jet Black New Year". The break downs fit perfectly, even when changing keys and tempos, it just seems to blend so much better than ever before. I especially love the countdown at the end, pure and utter mastery.

Thursday, in my opinion, is a band on the brink of genius. A band that is, as I am writing this review, reaching their full potential as musicians.

I look forward to hearing the new full length which I have heard will be out early next year. If it is at all following the example set by "Five Stories Falling", it should be a masterpiece.

They're getting washed up in the saving of rock and roll(ha)and they're pretty overrated. I think it's because the mainstream doesn't see hardly ANY decent music, so when they get a hold of it, they run and say it's the best thing in the world. First of all, comparing this to "New Noise" in a little unfair. Very few songs compare to that classic. You might as well say "It's no Holiday in Cambodia" or "It's no London's Burning" or "It's no I want to conquer the World"
You can't stack the deck like that...

But second, and more importantly, this is, in my opinion, an amazing song. Emotional, intense, and a evolution from their last record. All good things.

It's a great song on it's own, and considering it's almost a throwaway on a live EP, it's much better than I expected.

As for the live tracks, they're a little weak sounding to me. The sound quality is ok, but who ever heard of a band that sounds more energetic in the studio than live. Weird.

The songs were recorded live at The Warped Tour and I heard all of them when I was in NY for it. On a side note, they should have never put this band on early. Anyway for the new song I'll just find it on Kazaa. This ep is sort of a nail in the coffin for Thursday and Victory.

Sorry about the mistake on Waiting but I would like to add something that I should have in the review. Here is a part of the song Jet Black New Year and this just blew me away:

    "Ten seconds left until midnight
Nine chances to drown ourselves in black hair dye
Eight faces turned away from the shock
    Seven windows and
    Six of them were locked
    Five stories falling
    Forever and ever
Three cheers to the mirror now there are the
Two of us can we have just
    One last dance."

I got one word for that lyrical display. Brilliant. Do whatever it takes to hear this song people you wont regret it. -SideLinedForLife

good informative review unlike youre bad astronaut one but oh well. Oh and Jet Black New Year is the fucking shit folks. Its a lot more raw than previous Thursday songs. Like the review said if this is the new Thursday then holy shit balls. Its the best song Ive heard since New Noise.

hey scott, if you want the mp3 im me at "ibegintofeelcold". ill definitely send it to you when im online.

the songs pretty damn cool, though i doubt id call it my favorite thursday song. definitely not worth ten bucks... so i wont be buying the ep, unless i find it used for a lot cheaper.

'jet black new year' is the best song i've heard all year.

thursday is the best live band i've seen all year.

the live tracks, while not the best, pretty much sum up what thursday sounds like live. but you accually have to BE THERE to see just how amazing they are.

this cd was DEFINITLY worth the hour and a half of work to purchase. i would of payed that much just for 'jet black new year'.

"Not only does boy sets fire smoke this ep, they also smoke thursday as a band."

Hahahaha. Are you kidding me? The new BSF is soooooooo horrible. They went to shit. The new tracks are easily their 3 worst songs ever written. I'm not going to compare them as one band to another because they both have a different sound and I like them both, but the new BSF ep is absolute crap.

"Jet Black New Year" is a good song-has a real conflicted feel to it, but "Autobiography of a Nation" is their best. Hands down.
Anyway, not only is the music on this disc cool (seen 'em live 2x already, and will be again this tuesday), but the liner notes are interesting too. If you haven't already, be sure to read them, especially Geoff's. This guy can write.

the new song is great. also, if any of you fools have actually seen thursday live you know that they can play. wonderfully. i havent heard the EP's live songs, but i've seen thursday multiple times (before full collapse even came out, their first headlining tour, and on warped tour) and they were great each time. maybe they picked a bad live set. of course, this whole ep is just to get out of their contract, so i'm sure the quality of the live songs wasn't of utmost importance.

Listen to plenty of live records and their are NO protools. The Pennywise live album had no protools, the new awesome Rollins Band live album has no protools. The old black flagl ive labums had no protools...protools are for guys who cant cut it live, i mean, they might as well just rerecord the songs in a studio cause so much over dubbing is done there anywya. Some of these bands RERECORD live guitar tracks in the studio! I'm sorry, but i thought this was LIVE not half n' half. Whats funny is the non-protools ones sound better by far, only if the band can play. I guess Thursday is either VERY self concious or they can't play.

    My Score:

compared to boysetsfire's contractual obligation EP, this blows. ONE new song? Weak. A song about a new year geoff had, weak. The song title reminds me too much of jawbreakers 'jet black' even if it has nothing to do with it. So I end up listening to that song instead.

Ill download the song, and forget people think "full collapse" is the answer to global warming.

actually as a matter of fact..all live albums..except maybe classic punk rock ones...are protooled..its impossible to go without it..thats actually how they sound live too...pretty amazing huh..but im sure youve never seen em live though

You know a band is shit when their "live" songs are protooled and weak hearted. If you can't play live, kill yourself.

    My Score:

"Jet Black New Year" is amazing, but the live tracks lack. Too produced, barely any crowd participation at all, and Geoff is too out of breath to sound decent. Plus their backup vocals are terrible. They ruined the end of "Paris In Flames", starting at the once awesome "BURN THIS CITY DOWN" part. Oh well.
