Diary of a first time Donnas listener, driving home on the Beltway during rush hour:

6:30pm: Hmm, the new Donnas record... good chance to spew out a bunch of self-righeous nonsense about the sad nature of the record industry and the average music listener's complacency with what Spin tells them is "cool."

6:31: So far so AC/DC.... just like..... with girls.

6:32: Woah, is that cowbell I hear?

6:32:30: Hey! That van's license plate says "go playa." That's hot.

6:33: More cowbell! Explore the cowbell!

6:34: So "Take It Off" is the radio single... ok, kind of catchy...

6:36: Look, silver Jetta, do you want to move over or not?! I'm giving you space here... alright fine....

6:36:30: Oh now you want to move over! Nuh uh!

6:39: Wow, track 5? Still sounds like the first song...

6:41: I think they've used the same rehashed Motorhead guitar riff over 3 dozen times already.

6:45: Woah, no thanks on the all-girl gang vocals.

6:48: WHY IS TRAFFIC STOPPING??? There are 6 lanes here!!!

6:50: This seems like the female companion to Andrew WK.

6:51: Apparently the expensive producer didn't know any new drum rhythms either.

6:53: The aforementioned expensive producer did however make the guitars sound nice and crunchy.

6:55: God damn you orange Aztek! I need to move over, see the signal?? Don't take out your frustration with your substandard vehicle choice on me!

6:56: This song isn't so....... Well son of a bitch, now I've missed my exit! That Linkin Park record over there is looking really good...

6:58: What was I saying earlier? Oh yeah.... I've almost made it to the end without hurling this CD at the green Taurus that's tailing me... That must count for something.

6:59: Ahhh, my exit.... hello exit.

7:00: Uhhh "Take Me To The Back Seat"? Hey Donna, I'll sell you a little of my self-restraint if you want.

7:02: I could really go for a Twix bar right now....

7:03: Woah, surf rock? This one's getting skipped....

7:03:04: Last song! I made it!

7:05: You know I think i just witnessed an entire album of filler.

7:06: Alright I'm home, though I think it's time to head out to the used CD store to ditch this thing. The catchniess doesn't quite make up for the lack of substance.

    My Score:

although the Donnas have a history of playing a simplyfied version of AC/DC, they seem to have taken a different approach with this album. Leaving "I don't want to know", "Fall behind me" and a couple of others, the Donnas are more lyricall and better. They even make a song that sounds ly Led Zep with "Don't break me down".

    My Score:

Great road album that even your grandma well let spin while you take her to the doctor. For people who understand that music is about how good it sounds - not where the band came from, whether or not they can play eruption, or how fast can the bass make the drummer go.

nice review buddy. i'd say this album has been given way more attention than it deserves as it is.
fuck the donnas. they suck even if they are hot. lunachicks is where it's at if you're after chick punk bands. lik a bit o' edge with me punk do i.

The Donnas are not pop-punk. Haven't you figured that out yet? Sheesh.

    My Score:

This was a terrible review. The Donnas album is really good. Don't listen to this nut. Honestly, I don't understand why people review bands that play in genres of music that they already hate. It's pointless. Kind of like getting a techno dude to review a punk cd. Anyways, this website is turning into a joke by letting people like this dude write reviews that are not based on any real criticism. They've been using a cow bell forever. Listen again RETARD, they are not using the same riffs in every song. Your ears are a bit too waxy I think. It seems obvious this website is so anti "girls in bands" unless you've got some lame mohawk and play in a band with all guys. That skate punk shit sucks ass. You seem to blow off this record because it is made by girls and because it has a producer. Wah wah. I hate what you males are becoming these days. Go read your Maxim-wannabe-Big-Brother skate mags. Stop reviewing girl bands if you can't appreciate talent. Donna R is a lot better at guitar than most of the lame boy-bands on this site. These girls get no respect! Who gives a shit if they are hot. I have seen zero hot guys in bands lately except for Fat Mike! Stop being jealous of the Donnas. Go back to school and learn how to write a decent and fair review. Bet you ten bucks you the type of guy that wouldn't say these things to their faces. You'd be sucking ass just like the rest of their lame male fans. Donnas=fun. The End.

    My Score:

The Donnas, while being the hot girls they are, possess a talent that is on the same level as pretty much every other 4 piece punk-pop band in existence, and they only get the attention they get because they are girls - but how is this any different than in any other genre of music?

They have the ability to craft an album full of catchy songs that are well crafted with choruses that make you want to sing along even though you pretend to be all hardcore in front of your friends.

Fuck the reviewer of this album, fuck all the people who commented negatively about it - don't listen to that shit. Find out for yourself. The record is like $7, so go buy it. If it sucks, sell it on Amazon. Big deal.

I don't care much for The Donnas, but I really like the song "Take it Off." I mean, a punk song by four lovely ladies about taking off their clothes, how can you go wrong?!

how disturbing it was to find this review after going to punkrocks.net during "short reviews month" a few days ago and reading the same thing. considering the direction punkrocks has taken, ive been turning my attention to this site a lot more. but now its here too. guhh.

note to kevin: ive been visiting your site since about '99. you need to go back to band of the month or SOMEthing istead of all these AIM chat monologues and whatnot. and stop talking about the warped tour already. its been long enough, really it has. this is not annonymous shit talking (yea i read your column) just some friendly advice.

I'm usually an asshole when I post here because of the stupid reviews I read, but this review was the best ever. This is totally how most people, admit it or not, "review" a CD when they first get it, driving home from the record store. As far as The Donnas go, who fucking cares? I respect that they are females working hard in a male dominated music world, but c'mon, being a Go-Go's cover band that plays the same riffs OVER AND OVER, record after record, will only get you so far. The only positive thing about the Donnas is the fact that now that they've signed to a major label, they can afford personal trainers, hair stylists, etc. Now they look "chubby cute", instead of... "just chubby".
