Well, the show was slated to begin at eight o’clock. I arrived around 6:45PM and to my surprise they were letting kids in to beat the cold. I was one of the first to enter so I planted my self right on the gate upfront. Yes you heard me correct there was a gate in front creating a gap between the stage that was filled with some crazy meat-headed security guards. Oh well at least I was close, and enough about me, onto the show.

First up were The Blood Brothers, let me tell you what, these guys were fucking amazing, and loud. Their guitarist played not one, but two Orange half-stacks and their bassist played two big ass cabs as well. Even though the crowd was a bit hesitant toward their style they still made a connection, well with me at least. They tore through a blistering 45 minute set while fidgeting and making other crazy sporadic movements. Occasionally one of their two singers would spring himself through the air off the monitors during the really tense parts of the songs. Overall, a fantastic performance by a fantastic band. If these guys don’t “blow up” when their new album drops I will have lost all faith in every music fan EVER.

Then came Christiansen, straight out of Kentucky. They didn’t empress me too much. Although their lead guitarist/singer pulled off some hella good tricks with his guitar flipping it around his neck and swinging it, never missing a note. They played these really stupid sounding techno interludes in between songs and that got pretty annoying. They must’ve ended with their best song because I enjoyed the rock session very much. They should’ve played first and only played the last part of the last song for 30 minutes. That would’ve made me happier.

Next up was the “Nine-Armed” fury of American Nothing. I’d been looking forward to seeing these guys again for awhile now and believe me, I was quite disappointed. They played all the hits but no one seemed to be getting into their set. Possibly because there was a five foot gap between the stage and the fans. And the gap was filled with music-hating bodybuilders who will stop at nothing just to kick a kid out, assholes. Anyway the band just didn’t seem to be feeling the crowd/venue so they didn’t move around very much. Toward the end a few kids pushed forward to thrust their fingers toward the band. I’ve seen these dude a few times, live and on video, and they just didn’t seem like themselves. Maybe they were sick or something. Oh well, onto the next band.

Last but most certainly not least was the grand musical styling of the mighty Glassjaw. Now, don’t get my wrong I love this band with all my heart and I may sound like a hypocrite for saying this but Glassjaw has the worst fans EVER. I think it’s just a bunch of Drive-Thru kids' way of venting their rage, you know an outlet of sort. I heard one comment, “Why are you smoking, I thought you were “Straight-Edge?.” While the smoker replied, “Oh I am Straight-Edge, I just smoke.” Then the first one replied, “Oh I See.“ Never have I been more baffled in my whole life. It was a giant horde of fat kids who tilt their hats and don’t understand the message that The Jaw is trying to put out. Anyway, enough of my ranting, onto the performance.

GJ tore into the set with “Stuck Pig” and ripped through a few new ones. Daryl skipped across the stage gyrating his body to the music and jumping after the pauses. He has got to be one of the most flexible performers I’ve ever seen hit the stage. Glassjaw sped through their songs with ease rarely stopping to talk to the crowd something I usually look forward to. They gave a few surprises by playing “Cavalcade” and “Convectesuco,” two songs I had never seen them do live before. But, other than that their performance was quite mediocre. Not too much craziness in the crowd, because The Rave is the worst venue ever in the history of mankind. Every kid who tried to crowd surf was immediately apprehended and kicked out. Fuck The Rave and there fucking big muscled jerk-off security guards, they can suck my nuts.

Don't be an ignorant bastard. Not all straightedge people are the hardliners who beat the living shit out of anyone who doesn't agree with them. There are many a straightede person (myself included) that don't participate in the hating of others just because they don't happen to practice this life style. And on a completely seperate note, Glassjaw blows out the anal cavity, I haven't heard a worse band sine...well...ever...

Blood Brothers sound like they might be ok....I really like how they are spazzed out. My favorite kinds of bands are the ones where the singers just reak out and get into screaming fits. So it sounds ok on my part.....now i need to check out the lyrics to see if it nails me.

sporadic means occaisional and sudden, so i guess the Blood Brothers weren't very active. Unless of course you meant to say Frenetic or frenzied. Sorry, im just bored and felt like saying that. Ok review.

Well what can i say. there awesome for the 5th show i've seen them this year. Then came American "nothing" the pit sucks will all the gay glassjaw fans there but the hardcore kids soon showed everyone who was boss and fucked that shit up. Good show by them. Crazy!!!! then came on of the suckiest bands i've ever seen. Glassjaw. wow there sloppy. their not even Hardcore, so i wont even go into the whole sXe shit with them cause there nothing....

    My Score:

Straight edge wasn't meant to be anything but a term.......unfortuanately some ignorant people use it as ANOTHER excuse to hate other people. I personally live a straight edge style life (I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't eat beef), but only because I want to make myself the healthiest most fit thin i can be.....not because i want to hurt other people. Ian MacKaye coined the term, but is ashamed of the "movemnet"....it's just like a religious or racist group, in that it hates people not like them....and I'm not into hating nayone except the people who fuck with me. So sXe can be good or bad depending on how you interpret it. If you wanna drink fine, if you wanna smoke fine....hell, I'm pro- drug legalization because it would cause less deaths due to over zealous pigs and drug cartels....if it's legal then the only people who will be harmed are the ones using it, and if they want to hurt themselves then let them. Anyway, my point is DO WHAT U WANT!

    My Score:

Okay...yeah I'm the one that said "straight-edge" sounds stupid because what does it have to do with music? And when that kid said to that guy smoking "Hey, I thought you were straight-edge"....what's that all about? It sounds like a frickin cult to me.

"Hey guys, help me out. What is this so called "stright-edge"? I don't know what it means to be "straight edge"....it sounds like a stupid thing...so I wanna know. Thanks."

Straight edge is a lifestyle where you don't drink nor smoke. In some cases, people go as far as having no promiscious sex and living the vegan lifestyle.

it's a lifestyle I respect a lot. It's not easy to live up to it and whoever said it's a stupid lifestyle. You, my friend, are obviously ignorant.

american nothing should have headlined. the pit was fucking off the hook! i almost got knocked out by stagedivers and people flying off of the side railing. blood brothers were 90% norma jean and 10% hives... get rid of the hives look and dance steps and you got one hell of a hardcore band. lead singers who try to look pretty piss me off. oh yeah, fuck all you glassjaw haters!!!! darryl and the boys are class acts, get off their backs. it's not like they sold out like hatebreed.

    My Score:

What do you expect a singer to do during an instrumental? If they play like, say 14 songs, and one of them is an instrumental....if the guy works his ass of and does things inhumanly possible during the reugular songs, he's probably gonna rest during the instrumentals. I don't know if American Nothing(Nightmare) are that way I have never seen them. But even the best stage performers rest during the instrumentals. If he sunks DURING the songs then that's another story entirely. I like instrumentals, some of my favorite bands had tons of instrumentals. And usual the singers will either leave for a moment, play one of the instruments, or stand there and fuck with the crowd.

that was a damn good show... everytime i die is fuckin amazing live... the guitarist destroyed his guitar and his amp at the end of the set... that made me sad being the two together cost more than my life is worth

You people are so fucking pathetic at times. Get over the fact that Glassjaw is "almost" to MTV now.

    Get the fuck over it.

So what? WHO CARES? Glassjaw is good and you can sure as hell bet that they would be one of the few good bands to actually get the respect they deserve.

This goes for punk and hardcore band. Get over it.

They aren't your little secret anymore, stop holding them back from what they can be and what they should be.

If you don't like it, don't support the band and don't watch MTV. Plain and simple.

American Nightmare is amazing. Wes is not a coke head. Ive seen 8 times, and everytime they play, Wes has that fucked up look on his face. He almost scares me with his ranting...but they still rock. Blood Brothers rock live, but suck when ya hear em on disc. And Glassjaw, well Glassjaw just sucks. I knew former Guitarist Jeff Smith of GJ before they broke up and got big somehow . They sucked then, and they suck now. Youre almost to MTV guys..just a little longer

straight edge wasn't meant to be anything more than two words in a song. Ian was just trying to show the importance of living healthy. I don't drink, i don't smoke.....but i dont call myself stragight edge. This "cult" bullshit is just as bad as a religion. So, in a sense, Minor Threat coined the phrase, but the stupid "group" shit was started by other people who missed the point.

"why is there an 'x' in between the 's' and the 'e' in the abbreviation for straight edge? i just dont get it. oh well."

X's are the symbol for Straightedge, oftentimes XXX or X's instead of periods in acronyms. It all started way back during the conception of straight edge (Minor Threat time period in DC). Anyone under 21 entering a club (meaning they're not going to drink) got an X drawn on their hand. Straightedgers began to do this themselves before they even got to the show, 21 or not, just to show that they weren't going to drink alchohol even if it was given to them. or something like that.

the reason American NIGHTMARE didn't seem like themselves is because Wes lost the emotion he used to have. He's a fucking coke head now. I saw them twice out here, in San Diego and in Orange County, both times they had an instrumental in the middle of their set, at the SD show, Wes just stood there at the front of the stage, with a really blank look on his face, and licking his gums(a common trait of somebody who is need of his or her next fix of coke). I'm sure they played this instrumental at your show, try and remember if you noticed this happen. Either way, I will always love American Nightmare.

    My Score:

Unfortunately I missed the Hollywood date of this show...ours had Open Hand at it too (by the way, anybody outside of California heard of these guys yet? They've toured with Thursday...anyway, their new record on Trustkill comes out January, get it). So, do most venues over there not have barriers in front of the stage? I've grown very accustomed to it, as it's pretty common for a bigger place in LA to have one. And I've seen many, many AMAZING shows with this 'gap', so I don't see how not being able to climb on the stage dissipates the enjoyment factor. The reason American Nightmare (or Nothing...what a fucking stupid name change) seemed awkward was probably because they're opening for a band that has played Ozzfest and toured with the likes of the Deftones...they're not playing for their audience. But don't get me wrong, I'm not badmouthing Glassjaw with that comment, their new album is really good.

I go the Rave all the time. The security guards are muscle-head assholes with something to prove. They feel worthless working security for bands they hate for shitty wages, so they take out their aggression on skinny punk rock kids. That being said, crowd surfing is stupid. If you want to crowd surf you should be kicked out. A lot of people want to get near the stage to watch a show. You should have to accept a decent amount of pushing and shoving, and the occasional inadvertant elbow, what you should NOT have to accept is getting kicked in the head from behind with no way to defend yourself or any warning it was coming. The no-crowd-surfing rule is a rule made The Rave, not by individual bouncers. They are trying to cover their own ass and protect people.

Anyway, all those bands kick a lot of ass. Blood Brothers especially... did Glassjaw perform Ape Dos Mil? Thats my personal favorite.-BostonMusicGuy
