Today and for the rest of my life I can say something I never ever thought I would say... On Friday November 8, 2002 I saw Reach the Sky open for Sum 41 at Bill's Bar. So yea, I guess everyone here knows that I like Sum41. Dont regret it at all to tell you the truth. Guilty pleasure I guess. But.

But when I heard they were going on a club tour I knew I had to see them. So I grabbed up a couple friends and the BostonMusicGal (who was home for the weekend) and drove down to Sullivan Square and took the T to Kenmore.

I assumed, Sum 41 playing in Bill's Bar, capacity around 200 (at the most), couldn't be an opening band, especially since the tickets were only $10. Boy was I in for a surprise. I walked in and saw a Reach the Sky tour merch table set up... and got a little excited... asked if Reach the Sky was playing.... got, possibly, a little too excited. Now, mind you, I am a Reach the Sky fan, not a huge fan... have one album, So Far from Home, and I really enjoy listening to it every now and then. I assumed from the beginning that there would be a lack of people that had actually heard of Reach the Sky, nevermind enjoy them. So as I took my place along the side and saw the weakness of this crowd, the motionless Sum 41 fans just going through the motions so that they could get to their real reason for being here I knew I had to spice things up a bit. So during their incredibly energietic set, to a rather un-energetic crowd, they really took me up a notch. Getting the crowd involved as much as they could, incessantly telling people that its ok to jump around, its ok to jump on stage, and that its ok to have fun at a punk show, they got the few fans that they had there going in a way that made the show that much better. Overall the Reach the Sky set was amazing and I definitely want to see them again.

So, Sum 41 huh, the band you guys love to hate, and me the reviewer that brought out all the hate that they have recieved. Well here we go again. Like I said, I like Sum 41... you guys don't. This is the way it will always be. I checked them out at Warped tour 2001, and they were a lot of fun. Thats all they are meant to be... fun. So with that in mind... They opened with their newest, very different, song "Still Waiting", Which is a pleasant surprise for me. I really enjoy the song, its a different direction that Sum 41 is exploring and I think it works really well. Running through some songs from their first release, Half Hour of Power, such as "Makes no Difference", and "Machine Gun", and of course a lot of songs from their hated All Killer No Filler, "Nothing on my Back", "Never Wake Up", "In Too Deep" (gag me), "All She's Got" and many others. They also surprised us with some new songs, none of which I caught the names of, but I have to say that if you are expecting the same Sum 41 on this new album, you will be very surprised. Of course the crowd was very into Sum 41, singing along, jumping up and down, even doing a bit of the mosh pitting (why?) on some of the songs. They, of course, closed with Fat Lip and left the stage for about 2 seconds. Deryck decided that was useless and they would forget about the whole going off stage for a couple minutes and not surprising anyone by coming back out to play 3 more songs. So they just changed up guitars, and bass, and stormed back with "T.H.T", my favorite Sum 41 song. and closed with 2 rousing renditions of "Pain For Pleasure", I guess one wasn't good enough for them.

The night was good, Sum 41 didn't upset me, and Reach the Sky was a pleasant surprise... now if you'll excuse me I'm off to review something that might tickle your fancy a bit more than Sum 41.

Sorry about that Sickboi, but I just thought it would be more appropriate to give you my honest opinion about them, rather than just flat out lying.

FeedMyNightmare (November 25, 2002)

Now i hate Sum41 jus as much as the next guy, but truth be told, I can appreciate good poppy music. The first Sum41 cd was just that. Then came that attrocious second cd..But their new single isnt that bad. So that being said, I wish I woulda been to this show. I love reach the sky. Theyre simply amazing. So good, review BostonMusicGuy...

waste_elite (November 25, 2002)

Anonymous (November 25, 2002)

I don't like dudes like that bro...

And as opposed to Pat41, Bostonmusicguy is ok with me.

Wuss was cool until he downed HWM, for that I can not forgive so easily.

Anonymous (November 25, 2002)

the Used are the shit.

BostonMusicGuy (November 25, 2002)

oh yea... and im sure waste_elite and sickboi dont really want you talking for them... if they wanted to fuck me, as you so put it, im sure they would have said that themselves. what good is it to hate someone on a message board?-BostonMusicGuy

BostonMusicGuy (November 25, 2002)

oh wow... cool. But I never actually said NFG was punk. I actually cant stand NFG anymore. Repetitive bullshit. some people are fucking morons. Yea i think WussEmo is a moron too but he has the right to like whatever he wants... except simple plan thats just horrible... People have the right to like whatever they want and I bet that I listen to more hardcore than you would ever imagine.-BostonMusicGuy

Anonymous (November 25, 2002)

WussEmoRock (November 25, 2002)

Yep, waste is just one of those great guys...

CaptainCrunch (November 25, 2002)

The new video is stellar.

HAHA! Baja Men....that's the funniest thing I've heard in a while. And Waste is one of the few on these boards that doesn't have his head up his ass.

waste_elite (November 25, 2002)

wussemorock is a masochist

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

This score is for people who hate each other over message board material. This score is also for the Baja Men

"there is no i hate wussemo bandwagon"

uh huh, yeah, that's why no matter what he posts everyone jumps on him and calls him names and shit.

as far as his post goes, there's a shitload better ways to reply to what he says than what's been said. try not fighting. oh well, i guess it's easier to call someone stupid than to explain why you disagree with his opinion.

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

bawh. sum 41. boring. stick to somewhat interesting bands.

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

I personally don't hate him, but his posts are so moronic most of the time that it's hard not to.

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

"there is no i hate wussemo bandwagon"

That's the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. Wussemo is annoying, there's no doubt about that, but it's also the "cool" thing to hate him. I don't see how you can deny that.

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

Why do 2 of the biggest idiots on this site have to talk so much?

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

hey wussemo-its ok. take a deep breath. you can take that butt plug out of your ass now.

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

so pat41 became bostonmusicguy? wierd. i always wondered happened to him.

BostonMusicGuy (November 24, 2002)

OK, so yea... definitley didnt review the new Good Charlotte album... sorry to bust your bubble there. I have never loved NFG, always though they were ok but lately they have been making me sick. A man has a right to change his tastes in music. There is no I hate WussEmo bandwagon... im just starting to realize what an ass you are. I dont hate you... hell i stick up for you sometimes... I just think you are an idiot more times that not. This is all I have to say on that subject.-BostonMusicGuy

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

He's got you there Pat41, ya jackass, BOP ON!

WussEmoRock (November 24, 2002)

what is your problem all of a sudden? You realized everyone hates me so you jump on the bandwagon and start bashing me too?

to answer your question patrick, I didn't like their second album, infact I reviewed it on here and then you took the liberty of reviewing the album a week after me (writing the same thing too).

Lastly, everyone, Pat(bostonmusicguy) loves NFG, so Pat, explain to them why you are conforming to new and "better" music.

For the record everyone, you can all go to hell. especially patrick, I've never seen someone want friends more in my entire life haha on a website

Anonymous (November 24, 2002)

i hope i don't get eaten alive for this...

good charlotte's first cd really wasn't all that bad, i mean, for being sickeningly poppy punk, but outta all of "those" bands they WERE probably my favorite, this new bullshit with the black hair dye and liberty spikes and eye makeup, what the fuck is that? and their new cd is generic garbage

BostonMusicGuy (November 23, 2002)

Good Charlotte is much better than crappy Simple Plan, NFG, Mest, the Starting Line, Yellowcard, and most other pop punk bands around these days... but you are right they still kinda suck. There "old" album i really liked but this new one was horrible. WussEmoRock probably likes it though.-BostonMusicGuy

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

And what about your right hairy ass cheek. I hope you saved that spot for the worst band that somehow got sucked into the punk scene...

Good Charlotte. -SideLinedForLife

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

Simple Plan can suck my left hairy nut

NFG can suck my right hairy nut

and Sum 41 can lick my left hairy ass cheek

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

Fuck you wussemorock you pussy

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

yeah simple plan is pretty horrible.

BostonMusicGuy (November 23, 2002)

Yea, not going to lie to you.. .Simple Plan is quite possibly the most worthless and hideous band there ever was.-BostonMusicGuy

evildeadalive (November 23, 2002)

Don't forget the worst band of them all... Simple Plan.

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

Wusas....you can't bag on BostonMusic for liking Sum 41....you freaking like NFG!

TJmoney (November 23, 2002)

Reach The Sky opening for Sum41...hmmmm I don't know what to say. Except that the Sum41 kids got a treat in Reach The Sky. Maybe Operation Ivy can do a reunion tour and open for good charlotte....ok no I'm done.

BostonMusicGuy (November 23, 2002)

Sorry WussEmoRock, I know your reviews are a lot better. Sorry I had to tell you about crowd interaction... I forgot that that has nothing to do with what a show is about. Next time I will focus on something else. I dont know names of RTS songs, I just listen to the CD. I couldnt tell you which songs they played because they didnt say "This song is called...". Maybe if you read my other Sum41 review you would know that I DONT CARE if people hate me for liking Sum 41. I like them, thats that. Where was I trying to be "too cool"? IDIOT!-BostonMusicGuy

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

ahem...bitch, not bithc

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

sum 41 suck. go to hell you little teenybopper bithc. i'm an elitist punk asshole.
-is that to your liking?

anyhow, i wish i had heard more about reach the sky's set...

Geetarchick (November 23, 2002)

Scott, I presently agree. Motion City Soundtrack is whoasome... they do a grrrrrrreat live show. That keyboard player is so energetic. I wanted to see them earlier this week at the fireside but I had to work. boo.

Anyhoo, yeah i also think that Reach the Sky's music should have been described a smidge more in this review..

Melvyl (November 23, 2002)

but i have to admit that reach the sky opening for sum 41 is fucked, but not as fucked as the vandals opening up for the hives.

Melvyl (November 23, 2002)

i think it's great that sum 41 does a clubtour, i mean, not many bands who fighted their way through the mainstream are willing to do that. I guess they got a reality check last year when they had played the warped tour and a headlining tour and then came to europe and played in sweden for 50 people (even though some radiostation had given away 200 tickets.)

maverick (November 23, 2002)

Hahaha, Wyzo made me laugh at 3am.

Good work, my boy.

In other news, Motion City Soundtrack is the best unsigned band in America.

wuss emo rock is a bitch yeah im drunk eat my ass you still like sum 41 you horribly retarted bastard

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

wussemorock is angry.

WussEmoRock (November 23, 2002)

Horrible review Pat. You didn't say shit about Reach the Sky's set, just what the crowd did. Also, what kind of idiot would ask if reach the sky were playing when they have a merch booth up? Do you think it was just there for looks?

Lastly, your review consisted of you trying to be way too "cool" so people wouldn' bash you for liking sum 41. Next time just talk about the show.

For the record, their new video is really funny (the opening seen).

BostonMusicGuy (November 23, 2002)

BostonMusicGal is a name derived from Bill Simmons columns as the BostonSportsGuy... he calls his wife the BostonSportsGal so thusly...I am surprised at the lack of, Sum 41 is pop garbage they suck my asshole i hope they die, comments. What happened to all the close minded elitist punknews.org faithful? Oh well... good riddance to bad rubbish.-BostonMusicGuy

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

I saw this show in Detroit, and it was at a little bar in a very dangerous neighborhood, and barely any teenie boppers showed up. Needless to say, that made it a lot more fun. I had never been to a pop-punk show minus the little girls.

Sum 41 is not a great band by any stretch of the imagination, but they are a lot of fun. They get up on stage, play goofy songs, and screw around for an hour and it's hilarious. They don't take themselves very seriously at all, and I give them respect for that. The concert was a blast.

Captain Crunch

Geetarchick (November 22, 2002)

Thats... crazy. Almost like how Strung Out opened for hedpe (yeah i dont know where the proper parantheses go) and when Bad Religion opened for Blink 182. Its just getting weirder and weirder..

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

Sounds like a headache.

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

The new Sum 41 album is like when Green Day tried to create a "harder" album after "Dookie", even though they were never hard to begin with. Oh well, that's it, take it or leave it. If you like them fine. I think they are too corny, too cutesy and to unoriginal....but that's just me. But hey BostonMusicGuy....if you want us tyo be so open to your opinions, then be open to other peoples as well. If I wasn't so nice I would have just said "Sum 41 is pop garbage made for 12 year olds", but I respected you instead. Think about it the next time you place a comment buddy.

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

curious, whats a BostonMusicGal? sorry, just sounds funny to hear someone refer to their girlfriend as a screen name type name.

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

bostonmusicguy-you little pussy. stop listening to sum 41 and listen to some real, honest, straight up, punk music like sr-71 or blink 182. god what a poser. sheesh! some people.

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

oh boy, reach the sky opening up for sum 41? sickening.

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

T.H.T. is a horrible, horrible song. Shit music, shit lyrics, shit harmonies. So, to summerize, it's horrible and shit.

Dubar (November 22, 2002)

(notice the spelling, learn it-live it)

evilash (November 22, 2002)

i was just curious if sickboi's aim was to make sure he had a lame elitist comment after every single fucking review

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

He said they were going on a club tour.

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

I gotta ask....why would SUM 41 be playing Bill's Bar anyways?

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

What was Reach the Sky doing playing with these choads?
