Alright Im back. This album has already been reviewed but I thought I would do it on my own as... Pat41, back from the dead. So here we go, the band no one will admit to liking. Well this time around they actually are a different band. They have put together an impressive effort that fails at times but still always makes the fans happy. Ditching a lot of the poppy vocals, cheesy rapping, and Blink 182-esque rhythms they have decided to drive towards their goal of becoming an 80's metal band for the new millenium. Of course you all knew that there would still be the pop songs and the short raps so that the kids would come out and by the albums and we can just leave those be because Im sure you will take care of that for me. But to tell you the truth if you actually opened your mind and gave Sum 41 a chance you might actually find that there is more there than you thought. While the chorus of "My Direction" reminds me of Rancid's "Let Me Go" they put together a great pop punk song that isnt the pop punk that you are used to, and acts as my favorite on the album. Much faster and much harder. "A.N.I.C." acts as the obligatory punk rock song that hit on every album just like "Never Wake Up" and "T.H.T." Hard hitting metal guitar riffs, via Iron Maiden and the like, are all over this album. Dont think this is an album of gems though... yea yea. They definitley have a long way to go before they completely ditch the sound that gave them their fame, as is noted quite obviously on obvious singles like "All Messed Up" and "Over My Head". But highlights on this album do include, "My Direction", "Mr. Amsterdam", "A.N.I.C." and "Hooch". But Sum 41 isnt here to give us music that can be enjoyed throughout the ages and will be remembered all the way into the next millenium. Their job is and has always been to give us fun, high energy, catchy music that can be enjoyed by their fans. They dont care that you dont think they are punk and rip off whoever. All they want to do is what they want to do and thats what they are doing, and hopefully they can keep doing it... and piss you guys off just that much more. makes me drive like a madman.. This cd rules which is why Sum 41 is my favorite band (besides The Misfits) but i think the new one "Chuck" will be even better. This album is not what I expected. wow, whatever the guy beneith me just said, i didn't understand a word of it! freaky nerd......... jocks still suck. Its death and taxes. You can't change it. If ghandi was a jock, I'd have to say ghandi sucks. American kids are fucking hilarious. For example read the comment of the youngster whinging about jocks, I mean who really cares. Of course they fucking do!" FIRST: This album sucks. I tried and tried... But there is no zero option. To Jay Porter - Well I would happen to agree with you... But Fat Mike and Ben Weasel, while not exactly Pavarotti, do not sound like fingernails on a chalkboard. They may not be talented, but they are not annoying. (at least not to me, I know someones gonna come along and tell me how annoying Fat Mikes voice is). It all comes down to opinion. And my opinion is Bizzy D, or whatever the fuck his name is, has one of the most annoying voices in punk. (emo excluded, don't even get me started on some of their whiny ass voices) I guess now Sum 41 is out of their "we want to be NOFX" phase, and they're in their "we still want to be NOFX but now we also want to be Slayer" phase. Bad Brains could kick their ass? Shit, early Blink 182 could kick their ass. DAMN THE MAN FOR HOLDING THE BLACK MAN DOWN! This is one of the funniest "comment" sections I have ever seen. If you don't like Sun41, I don't blame you! Go put your posts on an Agoraphobic Nosebleed review then. Also, this is to evildeadalive: "there is no getting over a shitty voice." I have to take exception there. I think it's definitely possible to have an amazing band with a shitty-voiced lead singer. Prime example: NOFX. Both Fatty and Hefe have whiny, scratchy, high-pitched voices... nothing like Greg Graffin or anyone else with a nice voice. But NOFX works with their shitty voices, producing awesome melodies and amazing harmonies. And no, Mike doesn't always hit all of the notes perfectly, but listen to "Linoleum" and tell me it doesn't rock. Who cares if he doesn't hit that high G# in the first verse? Another example: Screeching Weasel. Ben's voice is so shitty!! But they still rock. I think if there's anything reducing Sum41's credibility as a good band, it's definitely not the guy's voice. --Jay Porter "yea, bad brains were always too mainstream and too poppy to ever be considered punks. plus, they were all black and we know only white people can play in a punk band." They make kick ass music, that fucking touches the soul (thats right I sound like a hippie). They are MOST awesome and you're just afraid to admit it. Although Sum 41 are far from being 'Hardcore' this album packs one hell of a punch. It has everything, good vocals, kick ass bridges and amazing solos by the God known as Dave Baksh. So basiclly buy this album, better than their old stuff and most certainly a band that is here to stay...whether you like it or not. seriously now, there are so many bands out there. why are you wasting your time reviewing a sum41 record? I find it endlessly amusing that there are people so hated here now that they've become celebrities and receive special mention when they post reviews. I can only hope to one day attain such superstardom. This scores for the icon that Pat41 has become! that guy that just posted is awesome hehehehe.... If you're gonna drop cash on a new album out on a major, get the new SOAD, its incredible. Yummy. Shitty metal. Listen to At the Gates or even any metalcore.
