This band has had an unavoidable knack for growing on me. Their first two albums I at first didn't enjoy all that much. But after repeat listens, I really got into their west coast hardcore style, and the singer's unique voice. As for this album, I can't say the same, totally. Their style has changed from their west coast hardcore style to more of a mixture of H2O, AFI, and Pennywise [which to me is no good, because I only like H2O out of those 3]. 98 Mute has made the jump to Epitaph and with that comes a bigger budget [I'm assuming] and a better producer in Fletcher from Pennywise. This is one of those instances where you wish they DIDN'T have a good producer. He makes the vocals sound too clean for my tastes, and they sound more generic then they used to. The music sounds a bit more bland and quieter, also, and the album seems to have a lack of energy that was displayed in their first two releases on Theologian. Overall, this isn't too bad of an album, and it's nice to see a good band like this get a little more exposure via Epitaph, but if you really want to check these guys out, pick up "Class Of '98" by them, it will rock your lily white ass.

What the fuck is wrong with everybody. I mean shit, stop ripping on these guys with all your lame ass unintelligent comments. these guys are fucking talented and produce some kick ass punk that is one of a kind. Listen to their shit thoroughly then make an opinion. It took me awhile to get used to all their cds but once i did they were on top of my collection and still are.

has california fallen into the ocean yet? it's about time it did.

Typo, I meant that the drummer doesn't SUCK like he did on the 2 first albums.

    AnarchyBurger (August 21, 2001)

Actually Fletcher has produced all of the 98 Mute's albums. Probably because Justin Thirsk, the drummer, is Jason Thirsk's (Pennywise's late bassist) brother.
Anyway, Slow Motion Riot is a boring album. The drummer doesn't like he did with 2 first albums, but that's probably because songs are much slower.
Their 2nd album "Class Of 98" would have been a really great Pennywise-type skate punk album if the drumming didn't suck so much.

I cant really complain about 98 mute...its kick ass music..i have one problem though, the singer..he cant sing at all! he sounds like hes shitting a pinecone or something. My advice is for pat to start screaming and just become a hardcore band.
