| VariousHopelessly Devoted To You Vol. 42002 Hopeless
Review by: PunkcoreKid See others by this writer Hopeless Site (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on February 14th 2003 I bought this for the Thrice and Common Rider songs mostly. I had never heard most of the bands on this compilation and it proved to be a good one. This comp has 18 songs of different genres of music. It has some great Hopeless bands like Thrice, Avenged Sevenfold, Common Rider, etc. I recommend this for people that haven't heard these bands before (like me before I bought this). I had never heard Avenged Sevenfold, Common Rider, or Against All Authority, and I was pleasantly surprised by all. I had heard so much about Common Rider and I have to say I wasn't let down by this song, "Small Pebble". When I heard "Second Heartbeat" by Avenged Sevenfold, I listened to it three times in a row before letting the CD play through, good stuff. The few songs I've heard from Thrice have been anywhere between good and excellent. Both songs on this compilation, "Betrayal is A Symptom" and the previously unreleased "Hideous Strength" show Thrice's harder side, which I haven't heard, as I've only heard songs like "Deadbolt" and "See You In The Shallows". "Hideous Strength" is an amazing song, and I hope they lean more towards this style when recording for Island this spring. I just can't get into Atom and His Package, the music is just weird. I know I'll catch some flack for this, but whatever. Some of the bands/songs were too ska for my taste (i.e. Mustard Plug). So, pick this up if you're just getting into Hopeless or if you've only heard a band or two from their roster. A pretty solid compilation in all.

Maybe my screenname is a joke of how everybody tries to categorize punk music by calling it post-hardcore neo pop-punk screamo or whatever. i agree with the post a couple of posts down. the weakerthans track is amazing! i can't wait for the new full length! This should be called 'Hopelessly Devoted to SUCK!' My score is essentially for the Weakerthans' track, although there are a couple other choice songs on this comp as well, the Weakerthans "take the cake." Heh. Who says that anyway? I think this comp is great. starting off with thrice, 'betreyal...' is a great song. then it goes to that 6 minute AS song, second heartbeat. that song is amazing. it takes a while to get used to the vocals cause theyre really fucked up, but the riffs are awesome. the AAA song kicks ass, and the atom songs and mustard plug songs also kick ass. out of all my comps, i would say this is my favorite... how come the weakerthans are so good people? Happy birthday Ralph, I love you, even though you are fucking disgusting. "you like Avenged Sevenfold.AS is one of the shittiest things to be put into the "punk" category since DC.All they are are wannabe metal that couldn't cut it,so they went on tour with some punk bands, and decided to be "hardcore"" Punkcorekid ? What kinda screenname is that when you've never even heard AAA ? You're probably new to the "punk" scene, huh ? There are what,14 different bands on this ? And you comment on what,6 of those bands ? No offense, but your review sucked ass.Especially since you don't like Atom and His Package and Mustard Plug, but you like Avenged Sevenfold.AS is one of the shittiest things to be put into the "punk" category since DC.All they are are wannabe metal that couldn't cut it,so they went on tour with some punk bands, and decided to be "hardcore" I have this sampler, which I purchased for a buck at Warped Tour, and while good,is NOTHING compared to #2.Also,next time, mention Selby Tigers or The Weakerthans or you will incur a wrath like none seen before.Asshat. Two and three were better. Two was an amazing comp actually. Still, this is a good comp for the price and I'd recommend it when you're looking for a good low price CD. My favorite songs were the Mustard Plug, Weakerthans, Scared of Chaka and Common Rider ones, but there's something for everyone. Avenged Sevenfold was good. "Avenged Sevenfold is just shit. Honestly, they represent everything that is wrong with Hardcore today: chug-a-lug screaming meets artsy pretense." I'm all about the Mustard Plug songs on this cd. Best band ever? Why yes, I most deffinately think they are. Common Rider and Atom kick ass too The first AAA track on this CD is pretty good, Dinkas When I Close My Eyes. However, I listened to the unreleased track for about 2 minutes (I borrowed it from a friend to listen to in a CD player) I just turned the thing off. It was that awful. man i know what your talking about with second heartbeat that became quickly one ofmy favorite songs The Weakerthans is basically John K Samson, and he's a genius of songwriting. Reccomendations: Watermark, This Is A Fire Door Never Leave Open, Confessions Of A Futon Revolutionist, Leash, None Of The Above, The Last Last One. Another reccomendation, a lyric sheet. This was a decent comp for sure. I picked it up for $1 at the Warped Tour last ear. You can't go wrong for a buck. AAA, Common Rider, Atom and Avenged Sevenfold all kick ass. The AAA song was alright. Common Rider song amazing, convinced me I needed to get their new album right away (it was new at the time). Avenged Sevenfold are great if you don't take them too seriously. I love their newest album, but can't help laughing half the time... Atom just rocks. If you ask me his best songs are songs like 'Anarchy Means I Litter' and 'Shopping Spree'. That shit is genius. The Thrice songs on here are decent, although I still like their first album better than any of their newer stuff. As for the rest of the album... meh. Never really gotten into the Weakerthans. Can someone please tell me what the attraction is, or maybe recommend some songs to convince me they're not as boring as I think? AAA does kick major ass. i submitted a review of them a while back. if the new thrice album is anything like "a hideous strength" then they've got one sure sale right here! Oh man you need to hear some of Atom's earlier stuff. I recommend "What we do on Christmas" and "Happy Birthday Ralph." I like Avenged Sevenfold but their songs are so longggg. AAA is indeed wonderful. Every time I see them, it makes me fall in love with music in general all over again. This was a pretty good comp. Weakerthans, Mustard Plug, Common Rider, fun stuff (I like the Digger song too, surprisingly). But, Avenged Sevenfold is just shit. Honestly, they represent everything that is wrong with Hardcore today: chug-a-lug screaming meets artsy pretense. Against All Authority kicks ass. |
