Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

Buddyhead. Love it or hate it, you have to respect it. The runners of Buddyhead, Travis Keller and Aaron North, have some big balls. Let's face it, I bought this cd a year ago because Buddyhead is just fucking hilarious, how surprised I was when I listened to this for the first time.

I popped this cd in, and the first thing that came to my mind was, "shit." I couldn't stand it. The obnoxious screaming, in-your-face guitars, loud as fuck drums, and the most distorted bass I've heard since Lightning Bolt. "This is awful, what a waste of money."

But....

I gave it a few more tries, and slowly, the album began to grow on me. I loved how catchy the single "Feed A Cat To Your Cobra," was, and soon enough I had fallen in love with this album. The immeasurable intensity of this band is outrageous. If I had to make a soundtrack to a fight, this would be it. Joe Cardamone's excruciatingly bitter lyrics are enough to make you scream along with him, and Aaron North's guitar work blends perfectly with the feeling Joe leaves you with. This is easily one of the most intense cds I've ever heard. Their anger towards the music industry and The City Of Angels just radiates all the way through this cd. On the track, "Rape Of The Holy Mother," they turn a poem by Charles Bukowski into one of the stand out tracks on the cd. The artwork is one of the best I've seen out of a cd within the last 5 years, laid out by none other than Frodus/Black Sea veteran, Shelby Cinca.

If you're looking for a cd that combines destruction and beauty, this is it.

    My Score:

I wouldn't call this a Drive Like Jehu rip-off. It's obviously inspired by Drive Like Jehu, but where would music (or anything at all, for that matter) be without inspiration?

This album has got to be one of the most solid pieces of ass-kicking on this side of the 21st century.

    My Score:

reading this review before seeing them live tonight got me thinking...

All these replies and the mighty, mighty Jehu is only mentioned once. If Trombino didn't record half the fucking thing, "ripoff" would be shouted in every other direction

Oh, and no mention of the Jesus Lizard. See above.

    My Score:

Cardamone looks absolutely wack on stage, and he sings/screams like a wacko as well. Even though it's destructive and depressing as hell, this is just fucking inspiring. And who's to say "this is what punk-rock should have evolved in to", well, this IS what punk-rock has evolved in to.

Everyone should give this a chance or fifty.

    My Score:

This is like all great records, it makes everything else shite. The comparisons are Drive Like Jehu, Black Flag, Jesus Lizard and The Stooges with maybe a bit of Spacemen 3 thrown. With influences like those, this record couldn't be bad.

    My Score:

this album is good. its very technical and very passionate. sounds like vaux, atthedrivein and refused type music. if u dig those bands, you'll like this, its darker though and less catchy. a darker and less commercial sounding vaux. its good but not amazing. its overrated. it won't change your life. it starts to sound all the same after the first half, but the first half is great. second half is ok.

you fucking little kids gotta learn that guns and roses was probably had the best 80's album, i know thats not saying much, but appeite for destruction is one of the best rock albums ever. i mean seriously, grow up.next we'll have you little kids saying the beatles sucked. christ. go listen to some music. i bet the kid that said guns were an ok mainstream band thinks the all american rejects is the best thing to hit mtv in years. fuck!

Buddyead used to be funny as hell. But you can only use the same one liners so many times before it becomes unfunny. Hey, if it still works for you great. Talk to me in six months, I'm sure your opinion will change after you read the same joke over & over & over & over.....

trying to hard? i dont think those dudes put any effort into anything. my only criticism is how they give their friends favorable reviews even tho you can tell they want to rip into em. i thought buddyhead was supposed to be no holds barred? if you need an example just wait till the new cave in comes out. theyll give it a good review even tho its very boring.

i know thats gonna make a lot of people angry but come on. the reason i liked cave in because i thought they were pretty ballsy to just up and change their sound.(you know how angry hardcore kids can get) but then i realized where i heard this before and i became pretty obvious that cave in just bought some failure, rush and giants chair cds. and now that stephen doesnt scream anymore its painfully obvious how pathetic his lyrics are. "you are rubber and i am glue"? thats some serious grade 3 shit goin down there. howd this turn into a cave in review? sorry. go buddyhead

    My Score:

i find it funny how many people are actually offended by buddyhead. proof that sense of humor doesnt translate well into the written word i guess. i must be the only one who likes their review page too. its like asking a friend what they think of a cd and getting a funny response if it sucks.(my friends are assholes too yes). i think this type of informal reviewing compliments the more formal type pretty well. sometimes you just want a straight up opinion on a record rather cheesy pseudo poetic descriptions other reviewers try give.

    My Score:

Since when did music have anything to do with fucking loose hookers?! The ony reason chicks fucked Axl was because he was famous, I doubt he would have pulled ANY of that off without his fame! Look at him, he's skrawny, whinney and is just a flat out jerk......he whines when his shows are "slightly" inconvenienced. I'd love to see Axl deal with shit like Rollins wrote in Get in The Van...Axl probably would have quit or commited suicide the first night.

    My Score:

Guns N Roses were OK for a mainstream act....but in comparison to Bad Religion they blew....BIG TIME. I never got into GnR and never really cared for them, even though they were far better than most hair metal garbage. Bad Religion, on the other hand, actually put some intelligent thought into their lyrics and, even funnier, started before GnR and are still in powerful existence 10 years after the demise of GnR. Guns N Roses are really overrated, especially their last albums. Their early stuff was OK, not great by any means. But their last 2 albums really blew bigtime.

    My Score:

AXL- no "E" buddy, is brilliant. fucking guns n roses? where are you? yeah, slash and izzy were the backbone of that band, but without axl, the band would have been just another mediocre rock band. axl put them over the top. axl is also the only guy i can think of that can successfully get 7 hookers in a hottub installed on the back of a limo. motley crue came close though. if that isnt brilliant....maybe laying pipe is stephanie seymore isn't enough for you, but if hittin it with a victorias secret model isnt awesome, i dont know what is.

    My Score:

they clearly don't like bad religion and pennywise. i don't either, those bands should quit. they are too damn old and boring...just like they were when they started out. buddyhead reviews are great reading.

    My Score:

Good stuff.....but what's with Buddyhead....their reviews are pathetic. They gave Bad Religions ltest album an "Average" (?!?) and proceeded to label Pennywise as "jock rock".....I thought we were out of the labeling stage of our lives.....junior high is over you know! Plus they use Axel Rose as a scale for brilliance, when Axel is ANYTHING but brilliant!

While most of the people in the band were cool, one or two were complete fucking assholes and the Icarus Line has the distinction of being the only band ever to be chased out of my house. letting the icarus line play in your house = a mistake

i gotta find some shit by them... even if aaron idolizes f-minus. this sounds good.

if i was going to choose a soundtrack to a fight, i'd have to take Kuroyume's "Corkscrew," well, at least until it turns ska and garage.

No, this is really good. I hate to say it, but this is the most punk rock thing out there right now. They are so pissed off and intense live it is unreal. It's everything punk rock should be, raw, angry, and hard. This is what punk rock SHOULD have evolved into. These guys are elitist dicks, but they back their shit up with a great album.
