I’m doing both albums in one review really because I think the story behind this band would have been told twice if I did, and I remember receiving some flak about doing it in by Templar’s review. So, sorry if you got a problem with that but I don’t feel like repeating myself or boring you twice. So on with the review:
One of the darkest and most disturbing bands that have ever formed, Turbonegro is re-releasing their classic albums 96’s Ass Cobra and 98’s Apocalypse Dudes on Epitaph, and with the lead singer finally released from the Italian mental institution that halted the band in late 1998, a headlining slot on three major European music festivals, and a new album coming this spring they are ready to take the world by storm. This band brings together the theatrical antics of early Alice Cooper, with the urgency and power of Black Flag, mixes with the striped down driving rock of MC5 and the Stooges, and provides a healthy dose of attitude as well to create their own distinct form of rock that many have dubbed leather rock. Not to be taken lightly, this band can not be described in words, as much as a person needs to hear them to appreciate the power that they possess. Please login or register to post comments. it was a day much like today. I was bored, alone and very very scared. I needed a new, catchy tune to quench my music thirst. So I took in the hype and downloaded an entire turbonegro album. Next thing I knew I was no longer bored, alone and very very scared. apocalypse dudes owns ass cobra, in my opinion (ass cobra is boring, to me...the bands that covered those songs on Alpha Motherfuckers did them better) Hey waste_elite... only... a... few... more... days... I want you guys to feel bad for me. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I, REALPUNX4LIFE, will not be seeing Turbonegro as originally scheduled. I hope you're all sobbing. see this band live if possible. it will change your life Yeah, I've heard the new record also. I think the real stand-out track is D.I.B. Drenched in Blood. It's more uptempo like their older stuff and that chorus is fuckin catchy as hell I downloaded their new album "Scandinavian Leather" and I think its pretty good. They still sound like Turbonegro, but I have to say I like Apocalypse Dudes better. The songs are more consistent on that disk and the guitar hits a little harder. I'm still definately going to buy the album when it hits stores though. insincere dave always elicits a chuckle. the twat guy is funny too. These cds are incredible You know who I thought to be actually kinda funny? JOE_MOMMA. I hated him at first, but he grew on me. Larry Lawrence was kinda funny too... Still no one tops Fathead, although insincere dave comes close...REALPUNX sucks because he didn't take my advice and at least prtetend his spelling mistakes weren't on purpose. This is truly some good shiz-nit homey beef. lockdown59 was a douchebag. Coldjuly sold his computer and moved to Canada, so he said. Yeah, the new AB material is sooo fucking bomb. "Built to Last" is a really great song. The new album will be a lot more energetic than 'New Union, Old Glory'. Oh man, and I like Ann Beretta, too! Although I haven't listened to them in some time and I didn't really care for their last two records. However I will probably be seeing them in a couple of weeks. I'm not sure what you mean about my second novelty phase, though. I don't remember that one. And my original novelty still comes into play from time to time. Anyways, thanks for the recognition! OI OI OI!!! What happened to Coldjuly? Of the "more lenient poppier music types", I like him more then lockdown59, who I recall has entered this web site with more of a happy face and now has become more bitter and hateful towards bands he may have loved initially. Fathead wrote excellent reviews, but played too much of a double life. Nowadays, if you must know (though you have not asked), my favorite posts come thin, but may include REALPUNX and sickboi, as well as Shindo (though he might not count?). Sickboi, because he likes Ann Beretta and that is good enough for me. REALPUNX has valid opinions, though he has played 3 characters in the past. 2 novelties: 1 being his initial incarnation, the second novelty being his more serious side, which seems to have only existed as a joke to show off his hidden intelligence, while his third character, which can probably be seen now, is what he, as a human being, probably actually is. These people are not my favorites, but I can't think of any more at the moment. I am writing this to procrastinate from the other, more important yet boring tasks I must complete. Scandanavian Leather will be released on May 5th. Originally it was April 22nd. Speaking of April 22nd, Murder City Devils! Speaking of May 5th, Pleasure Forever! I've got such a boner. I get mostly excited about hot chicks. I'll tell you who I miss though...Coldjuly. He was pretty cool. i am a good "real life" friend of scott, we go to the same college and i lived next door to him my freshman year, so if you want i can start posting all sorts of funny stories about him. and i think i prefer sickboi cause i havent seen seek in awhile, but my all time favorite is fathead i like asscobra better but i still love apocalypse dudes, so i don't think i'll be TOO disappointed with the new album. Also, Moldy, who do you prefer more, sickboi, or seek? Now sickboi and seek are both rude, but seek seems to be less of a human being, while sickboi, you can tell, gets excited when his favorite band's new album comes off. I just wanted to clarify something from the various pieces I've seen around. Moldy, are you Scott's roommate? Or at least a close ("real life") friend? I had heard of Turbonegro but never really paid attention to them until after this review. I got a few songs off Kazaa and it's great!! I will make it a point to make it my next purchase. If you like Ass Cobra better than Apocalypse Dudes, prepare to be disappointed with Scandanavian Leather. I guess it's pretty obvious that it'll just be a continuation of Dudes. But really, as good as Ass Cobra is, nothing can stand up to Apocalypse Dudes. I guess it's really just a matter of taste though. The Eagles were talented musicians but they were still an awful band. meh, i think i prefer asscobra to apocalypse dudes as well. it's a lot rougher. pitchfork reviewed both of these as well...and gave ass cobra a higher rating than apocalypse dudes. bullshit i say. not only did they screw up the name of the original record company (bitzcore, not blitzcore) the reviewer, in typical pretentious pitchfork fashion, had to comment that "he heard the band long before any of the hype" or whatever. motherfuck pitchfork. long live Turbonegro! ehh as far as i know im not on staff, maybe its for people that have posted x amount of reviews, sorry about the darkness/destruction mix up goddamn thats dumb Don't worry. "Fuck the World" is one of my least favorite tracks on Scandanavian Leather. That track is the new record's "Humiliation Street." The songs "Turbonegro Must Be Destroyed," "Gimme Some," "Ride With Us," and "Drenched in Blood (D.I.B.)" more than make up for it. Is Moldy on the staff now? I think its a little fucking stupid to distinguish those specifically, but, eh, I don't run this place. from what i can tell, bold reviews are from the staff. Did we ever get clarification on the bold reviews? love it to deathpunk baby! two of my favortie albums ever. i saw them on one of the summerfestivals. they were great, and the turbonegro movie is fucking awesome. Apocalypse Dudes has simpler songwriting? Are You Ready (For Some Destruction)? You should be ashamed of yourself, moldy. It's Are You Ready (For Some Darkness) not destruction. You forgot to mention one of the greatest things about this band, the over the top homoerotic lyrics. burstandbloom, If you wanna bring the rock, Apocalypse Dudes is bomb. Ass Cobra has more of the punk feel to it. You can't go wrong with either. seeing them tonight. great stuff. So for po' folk like myself, which album do you suggest purchasing first? Moldy likes NAMBLA. |
