To quote the wonderful 50 Cent, I love this like a fat kid love cake. As you all probably already know, over a year ago Boy Sets Fire made the eye-opening
switch to Wind-Up Records, home of Creed and Finger Eleven. I think that a decent
amount of their past fans lost a bit of respect for them at that point, but I decided to let the
music do the talking, and judge from there. Their EP, Live For Today showed us
a new, more polished Boy Sets Fire, more mature and structurally-aware than ever before.
The songs on it were top-notch though, and erased any doubt that this band had “sold
out”. Two of the studio recordings from it, “Release The Dogs” and “Bathory’s
Sainthood” appear on this album, as well as a new studio recording of “Handful Of
Redemption”, a song that appeared as a live track on the EP. That being said, my
expectations for this CD were high, especially considering how good I know they can be
(see: The Day The Sun Went Out or After The Eulogy, my favorite CD of
all time), and how tight their newer recordings and live show are (hint: see them
live). Please login or register to post comments. What are the benefits of having a Punknews.org account?
bsf rulez after the concert in belgrade chad gave me his t-shirt...marina this message board is one of the larger wastes of time I have ever found in my life, go listen to a song, write a song, do something with your life, stop wasting it on "punk news dot com" or other things that alert you to "relevant" things in music, and live your life. Hardcore isn't on the internet, its still in our hands...don't let it go. the breakdown of the first song actually is....the blood is on your hands, life stealing motherfuckers Except not at all. this really souns like a linkin park rip off i wish a band would put out a record that by sheer force of a musical note would cause the collapse of a huge integrated system of control and oppression. oh wait, thats not what records are supposed to do. Fuck, in that case, if its actually just supposed to be musical expression, then the new boy sets fire is good. this cd's good, not as good a cd as "After the Eulogy" but then again there's no way that could possibly ever happen. The screaming on this cd seems a little forced, to me, like he was trying to be overly intense and it just fell flat. If you're looking to get into BSF start with "After the Eulogy", then "The Day the Sun Went Out", and then this, after you have those just download all the rest of their ep's and shit Ohhh yeah... how bout that Daredevil soundtrack! Fuel, Hoobastank, Rob Zombie, Nickelback AND Boy Sets Fire. Man...I don't even know...that's just so fucking punk rock. I don't get what it is about this band. What's all the fuss? I heard about half of the last album and a few songs off this, and I don't hear anything more than pretty good melodic metal. The DVD... is disappointing. C'mon its fucking censored for crying out loud. AND they didnt show them playing After the Eulogy OR Eviction Article. Weak. it isn't e-bro, it's bro-mo. solid album, HORRIBLE production. Also the Cradle of Filth type screamy bit in Release the Dogs is embarrassing! Good album overall though! This new BSF shit is SOOO bad!!! I'm trying to figure out if you people are serious or not by saying that this album is the best release so far. It is overproduced generic crap!! Ever since Daryl (sp?) left this band they've SUCKED! Forgot to add Form Of Rocket, that will surely rock my 2003 top list, no matter what. Whoa, I never expected anyone to mention the Exploding Hearts on this website, especially since the drummer lived at my friends house for a while. People have heard of them? That's cool. This score is for the Cripples. I personally haven't heard them, but will listen based on your comment. I just hate asses who try to make smaller bands seem hipper by jabbing at bands that are a little more well-known. Its really fucking lame. But again, thanks for the recommendations. It's a shame people aren't familiar with Dirtnap Records. The Briefs, Exploding Hearts, The Epoxies, The Spits, the Cripples, etc. Best bands right now. Sorry, I don't read much Maximum RockNRoll bro, I don't like for some pretentious ass to tell me whats punk. You just sank yourself with that comment jerky. Yes! The Exploding Hearts are the best! The Pacific Northwest rules! "Shit you haven't heard and then scream DIY!" Sickboi needs to start paying attention to punk than whatever shit he's listening to now!! The Exploding Hears have been constantly written up in MaximumRockNRoll the past year! Start paying attention to relevent bands! I love these dudes who like to drop names of shit you haven't heard and then scream "DIY!". Dork. I bet you $100 that if Mr. Brett offered to pick your pal's band up they would jump in a heartbeat. Dork. Boy Sets Fire.. Ha! Linkin Park wannabes. Everybody seems to like to talk about best albums released this year...screw Boy Sets Fire. Rise Agaist is forgetable and not the future of hardcore despite what Scott thinks. The new F-Minus is okay. I don't care about Radiohead. The best album this year is The Exploding Heart's "Guitar Romantic." Learn it and live it--DIY. Released on CD format this year by Dirtnap (best label right now), released last year exclusively on vinyl by Screaming Apple. I'd have to say that so far this year these are the best albums- F Minus, Rise Against, Blood Brothers, Pistol Grip, and Death By Stereo. I know that's pretty vague, but they are all pretty great releases. I'd say that the new F Minus is so fresh due to it's heavier elements, it has a real explosive sound. The Blood Brothers are an aquired taste, but I think the release is a breath of fresh hardcore air and excellent if you can get into their sound. The new Pistol Grip album is full of great songs. The new Rise Against is, as expected, excellent. DBS new album is great. Now I'm just waiting for the mighty Good Riddance to give me a true #1, I gotta hear that new record! Post a damn mp3!!!! This CD is great and probably my favorite so far this year, but the Rise Agaisnt album will blow this one away Does the new Methadones sound like Ill At Ease? Hey there-I said best SO FAR. I'm sorry I like hardcore punk and that is a damn good record. Anyway, I just mentioned that cos the reviewer said he felt BSF's was the best SO FAR this year. In any case, I'm happy I could make you laugh. That's what I'm here for, doll. I'll give you another laugh-I like the Methadones' new one too! Whoa I'll keep 'em coming for you. Radiohead has nothing to do with emo, but I do like them. And I agree, F minus did put out a good punk rock record. It's not groundbreaking but it's still good. " I think F-minus' record is the best of 2003 so far" You're right. I'm not! Good for you. I think this album really shows the progression this band's made. nicely structured album; great tunes. go buy it. This band is pretty weak. I wrote this review, and I forgot to talk about the DVD...stupid me... "So what. I'm a Communist." If I reviewed the 50 Cent CD, would it get posted here? C'mon man Jam Master Jay (RIP) laid down some of the beats on that. Not to mention Ja Rule and "Fity" hate each other. That should help eliminate two problems. "if you listen to 50 Cent, and you're over 12, shame on you"-buddyhead The 10 is for a singer that sounds like the Cookie Monster. just the fact that the dvd has them playing 7 or eight songs makes buying this cd entirely worth it. This will be a good month for music. BSF, Rise Against, Death by Stereo, Fordirelifesake, and the Red Chord. this is one of the best albums of the year so far. Communism is the way to go. Look at the Smurfs, they were communist and they got along just fine. So what. I'm a Communist. Anyway, I think F-minus' record is the best of 2003 so far. "Sauce my ass" Sauce my ass....that was all rock baby. Jake the Snake Roberts was a preacher, then he got on the sauce again.... when is superstar billy graham gonna come out to preach or give a flying body splash. Mmmm, the 700 Club. hah! comment of the day award. I'd like to punch Aaron Icarus, but he'd probably just whine about how unoriginal it was. Hopefully this CD will shut up all the retard sell-out whiners...not just with BSF, but all our bands signing to majors. I love Wind-Up's warning on the back of the cd. They allow artists to express themselves but do not necessarily agree with the opinions of Boy Sets Fire. Hee-hee. Sounds like the warning before the 700 club comes on. oops love em or hate em, props to buddyhead for the term Pearl Jam sounds like Creed. If you like Creed, You're gonna love this! A few things: Ramo beat me to it, in da club I give this review a good score because he made we want to go out and buy this CD, but I can't, I need new tires for my car. Ya know, so I can "bounce on twenty fo's." Uh huh, uh huh, you know what I'm talking about Wangstas. Don't act like you don't know who we be, we be in the club all the time...Haha! i give it a ten for the 50 cent quote. Who cares if they're communists? whoever said that bsf is a great outlet for times like these? wtf does that mean. they're communists. there too simple now, playing nu-metal riffs This is worth it just for the DVD. The live show at the Troc on here rules. prob not sickboi, nothin doin in the best buy ad I don't think this is really any less technical than their other CDs, slightly less heavy maybe. Overall, pretty solid. Does anyone know if this has a special price anywhere? I still like them, but after they signed with Wind Up it made the long paragraph on the disc The Day The Sun Went Out praising the DIY ethic seem a little...insincere. This album was much better than I expected, but I don't think it is better than After the Eulogy. I also must note that I really dislike the production on this disc because it gives it a somewhat nu-metal feel. Good review...I'm getting this today. BSF are still the bomb, and in times like these they are the perfect musical outlet. Great review. I was a little skeptical about them jumping Victory ship, but you're right, as long as the songs are there, what matters? Definitely gotta get my hands on this one. |
