As weird of a mix as that may seem, that's what I got out of this EP. The Young And The Useless are a 5 piece out of Florida that play a positive brand of generally mid-tempo hardcore. I generally liked this EP, but I have few gripes: 1.There is absolutely no excuse for any band at any time to ever cover "Anyway You Want It" by Journey. It's not funny, it's not creative, it wasn't a good song to begin with, let it die, please! Every time I hear a band cover this song, I want to reach through the speakers, grab the singer by the throat, and scream "no!" in his face. 2.Singing on this type of album is ok, but not when your squeaky, high-pitched, out of key voice sounds like the mating call for some sort of rare marsupial. 3.These songs could be a little bit shorter. Four minutes is pretty long for this type of song, three minutes should be the cut off point. I'm not criticizing the band for trying something new, but I think some kinks need to be worked out. With all that being said, The Young And The Useless have put out an EP that is very good, especially for a newer band. The vocals bare a striking resemblance to those of Stretch Armstrong. The music is very melodic and even almost poppy at times, but it's done with enough creativity and enough of an edge that it still sounds good. The lyrics, just like Stretch Armstrong's, are generally positive and easy to relate to. "There's a constant struggle between my flesh and my spirit, I'm searching for the things I think I need to be happy. There is nothing I hate more than the feeling I get when I know I missed an opportunity for something great. If this next year goes as fast as the last five than we better start taking advantage of our time." are the lyrics the EP starts out with, and they generally remain reflective throughout the entire disc. If you like positive hardcore and you're looking for something slightly out of the ordinary, you should pick this up. The Young And The Useless need to focus their energy a little more on future releases, but their past two(this and "A Smile Is No Good For Me")are a good place to start. Most of us in Florida have had at least one show ruined by this band. this band is crap, the only young and the useless are the 1982 new york band. "real men donīt floss" is the best punk record ever! will somebody edit their lost demos, at last?. David Scilkenīs revenge!!!!. this band is crap, the only young and the useless are the 1982 new york band. They're no longer together but some of them started Glory Bullfighter, amazing band. www.glorybullfighter.com yah ok. the young and the useless is THE best band ever. they play some really awesome shows and both of their cds are great. i love this band. u really should too. www.mp3.com/younganduseless I'm starting a band called Bad Religion. ...and no one is the least bit concerned that "The Young and the Useless" was the name of Adam Horovitz aka "Ad-Rock"s band before he joined the Beastie Boys. Very well, but you kids need to be a lot more creative when you name your bands. I won't stand for this again. Adrock's The Young and The Useless, and Check Your Head, though different in execution, are instrinsicly pieces of punk rock genious that make a really great night a lot of fun. If you mean the Journey song, no I don't like it, it's obnoxious and I'm tired of hearing it. come on you all know you listen to anyway you want it dont lie yall gots ta feel me sing if youre with me ! This is the anthem throw your damn hands up! i still bet gc's young and hopeless is better than this. have u heard their song 'boys and girls'? thats the mad notes. thats the anthem throw your damn hands up! Interesting OK, so this will definately point out to everyone how not cool I am, but: the rise against cover of journey was pretty bad but bad enough to make me laugh. on another note i think ramo deserves comment of the day award for that thing about a puddle of hot butt mud i laughed out loud when i read that. And what the hell is going on 3 minutes into the song? Now it's just a garbage truck dragging a broken bicycle. I like it, but I wouldn't pick up the album. There are much better substitutes as been mentioned, and there is no way in hell these vocals compare to Kyle Bishop's. Which hole is getting bigger? cuz i know some girls with stories attached to them Good Charlotte is considerably better than this band, and they're 13 levels of ultra-gayness. *whoops* This is one of the worst things I've ever heard. At no point did this singer even attempt to sound like he was a singer. I feel like my ribcage is being ripped open by an alien. Its most unpleasant. I care how hardcore you are, this is just bullshit. This is one of the worst things I've ever heard. At no point did this singer even attempt to sound like he was a singer. I care how hardcore you are, this is just bullshit. aren't most marsupials rare by nature? fuck you guys. i love "anyway you want it." its cheesy but dammit sometimes you need that shit! oh on the other hand just got new rise against and holy fuck is it great! Yeah man, it was a nice change in the cd. It was nice to see this fun side of Rise Against. The Journey cover was the only bad song on the new Rise Against. It was friggin terrible. What with the Good Charlotte contest and alot of the other news/reviews on this site, I wouldn't have been surprised if you were serious. Is it that hard to convey sarcasm over the internet.. FortyMinutesWest, I really hope you're joking. I'm not sure, Good Charlotte=technical guitar wizards is this as good as the young and the hopeless by gc I've seen it spelled both ways. these guys do remind me a lot of stretch arm strong(three words, not two.. sorry). good stuff. i like it. Oh christ was that cover horrible, I remember the first time I heard it on one of the Victory Style comps. I wanted to press the skip button but I was frozen with terror. I've never heard a recording by this band, but I've seen them several times, and they bore me, though its leagues better than 99% of the high school band pop-punk shit out there that journey song will always remind me of how student rick stank when they did that rendition. then again, every student rick song is a puddle of hot butt mud. let me ask you a question. would you grab tim mcilarith's shirt and yell no at him when RA covered Journey? |
