A punk show, a rock concert? A bit of both. Sum 41 are truly a cut above.

This was truly an awesome night out. Show started at 8 sharp with the first band Billy Talent taking the stage. The singer alternated between a high pitched scream and melodic vocals. They sounded good, but got repetitive after a while. The drumming was not that fast, their riffs were pretty metal, they had good harmonies and their singer looked possessed. He clearly shocked the little teeny boppers that congregated in front of the stage.

After a half hour set they left the stage with the guitarist slamming his axe into the drums.

Next up: Flashlight Brown. Now, I had seen these guys before with mad caddies and downway. I had bought their CD at that show and thought that they were pretty cool, mixing punk with rock and a kind of weezer attitude. Anyway, they sounded OK, playing much of their latest CD and a couple of older tracks. Their singer was drunk and it showed. He wasn't sloppy drunk but his vocals were off tune and their melodies failed. they still put on an OK set, but really nothing to call home about. They swore quite a bit in between songs as did Billy Talent just to prove their tough punk side, I thought this was pointless and it just sounded stupid.

Last, but definitely not least came Sum 41.

Now before I start please understand I'm not a 13 year old teeny bopper that listens to avril lavigne and liveonrelease I mostly listen to rise against, good riddance, propagandhi, strike anywhere, bigwig and belvedere. But I have to say I have a new respect for these guys, please don't be so quick to judge because these guys rule live. They put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. I've seen many bands including greenday, foo fighters, nofx, bad religion, mad caddies, good riddance, satanic surfers, strung out, hatebreed, and the bosstones. But most of them just don't compare.

These guys are so hard working, they ploughed through close to twenty songs and played for over an hour. They played fast, hard and loud. They kicked off with Mr. Amsterdam, a favourite of mine, with great metal guitar riffs and screamed vocals. Then tore through 3 or 4 more off their latest CD, before playing their biggest hit Fat Lip, this was followed by more of the new stuff. They played 3 songs off their half hour of power EP, they played all their singles except for the crappy one off the spiderman soundtrack (still waiting, hell song, in too deep, motivation). They finished off the night with an encore which included 'thanks for nothing' and lastly 'pain for pleasure' with steve taking vocals and deryck hopping on the drums.

They even found time to play 'nothing else matters' by metallica. All in all it was an awesome show.

If sum 41 come to your town go. They are a great live band, they sound awesome, their playing is really tight and they know exactly what to do to please the crowd. Total showmen. 10/10. billy talent and flashlight are OK but in a different league to sum 41.

Sum 41 is good, theyre new stuff is. To all of you saying Sum 41 sucks- All killer no filler sucks and half hour of power isnt too good. The new CD is good with a few exceptions. If the new sum 41 CD was titled with a different band name you would probably like them. Guys like you listen to punk to be cool. We'll I don't. If I listen to a band and like them I will admit it and I don't care how "popular" they are. Okay I'm sorry im probably not "punk-enough" for you cool lets hate everything punks. I dislike Good Charlotte and New Found Glory. I think they are terrible. I also hate Simple Plan and the Starting Line and all that MTV crap. Sum 41 is MTV crap but its good. Listen to "Mr. Amsterdam" or "Hyper-Insomnia-Para-Condroid." Its good. Though I should ask myself "why am I writing this?" because you narrow minded, ignorant people won't care and still go around saying "yo man, i'm so punk... and SUM 41 SUCKS!" I guess it makes you cool nowadays. Maybe one of you guys should come out with a clothing company called "Sum 41 sucks" the clothes would be a number one hit to all you stubborn morons.

Sum 41 have really improved their live show in the past couple of years. I caught them at Warped 2001 and thought they blew goats. Deryck's voice was absolutely horrible and they didn't have much stage prescence. However, I saw them in Cleveland a few months ago with NUFAN (who I only caught the last few songs of because the Ohio Turnpike fucking sucks.) but I'll say Sum 41 did a hell of a better job than I was expecting. I don't think I'd ever go to just see them again, but I wouldn't complain if they were opening for another band I was going to see.

Machiavelli thought that it was better to be hated than loved, which of course you already said. But his whole premise was about looking good instead of being good. I should have been a bit more clear on the severe punishment thing, but it remains that he thought a king should bend or break the law when necessary, as long as the people didn't find out. I've taken many philosophy classes and read plenty of books on the subject, I'm far from an expert on it though. And I never said punk wasn't about politics, but to bring up philosophy because someone is bashing a band is pointless. When someone makes fun of a band I like I don't say "Stop bashing (band x) and go read Nietzche!" Just because you're well versed on such topics doesn't mean you have to throw your intellectual weight around and try to look smarter than everyone else.

    My Score:

    you're wrong.
Machiavelli did not believe in severly punishing the people. Machiavelli stated plainly that a ruler should be feared, not loved or hated. To do this he would not punish them severly, this would create popular hatred, a rebellion and consequent loss of power. To be feared a ruler would make examples of a few and push down his main contenders, but the people would be treated fairly.
Machiavelli was a Republican whose ultimate goal was a strong, fair, enduring state. Machiavelli also stated that the people should be left alone, their women should not be raped, because every woman is tied to some man's honour(her father, husband), and their property should be left untouched. To me this does not sound like severe punishment.
To me it sounds like a fool spouting nonsense on something he does not know. Maybe you should have spent more time in class than skipping and riding your skateboard.

You obviously do not have any knowledge of the thinkers mentioned earlier if this weak explanation of Machiavelli's thought is any marker to go by. Go back to school moron.
Also, how can you say this is just music. Punk is a musical form driven by politics. Punk is not just about making a noise, its an outlet for a political message, a voice. These punks do read philosophy, history, political thought. This is how they formulate their ideas and create their own political character. You may think I am condesending, but at least I'm honest enough to admit my own ignorance.

Listen to the lyrics of Bad Religion, Satanic Surfers, Dead kennedy's and tell me this is just music.

Hey, are you intellectually insecure or do you just like dropping names? Your condescending, elitist comment only made you look like a hypocrite. Machiavelli believed that a good ruler should severely punish his people and be a good liar. Hitler, well we all know about him. But why are we even discussing this, this is a music site. There is no deep philosophical discussion needed, people can like whatever they want to like.

P.S. Every notice that Canada puts out shitty popular rock acts? Avril lavigne, simple plan, nickleback, default, jeez i bet good charlotte r a bunch of canucks

hmmm, nope. actually i simply just listened and frankly, it sounded like shit. You don't need a fuckin machine to determine whether a singer is off key. oh yea and the synchronized jumping is lame too.

Sum 41 rocks and yes, like many have said, they have gained my respect over the past few years. Started out hating them, but there's just too much to like.

As for the music journalist down below, stop being so full of yourself. 10 years, bla bla bla. I've been a music "journalist" a lot longer than that and my opinion isn't any more valid than that of a 13 year old kid.

In fact, I'd give them even more credibility since they're the one supporting the band and paying for the tickets while all the so-called "journalists" are guestlisted and far away from the pit.

Go fuck yourself. Sum 41 rocks.

I saw Sum 41 a couple years ago right when they started to gain popularity and they were horrible. Derryck couldn't sing for shit, the only thing that made it redeemable was that nobody had a clue as to who they were so there weren't many people.

so you're not a 13 year old teeny bopper trendy, you're just a 17 year old trendy who loves copycat generic fat wreck style bands(strike anywhere excluded). yea, you sure showed me how "punk" you are. i unfortunately have seen sum 41 live and their coordinated in sync little jumps and spins and 3 guitar "attack" was hardly anything to be impressed about.

'They swore quite a bit in between songs as did Billy Talent just to prove their tough punk side'

are you sure? they swore and said 4 lettered words so they could prove how punk they are? how do you know, did you ask them? wow, youre logic isn't flawed at all. you must have a tough punk side too.
and sum 41 sucks live, i don't care if you think they write good songs or if they are a 'fun' band. They do have 'professional' production on their albums but they cannot do harmonies live and they basically blow.

i like rise against and sum 41 too, but there are a lot of people who have wide tastes like me. i like everything from something corporate to my chemical romance to avenged sevenfold (except for those godawful scratchy vocals). sum 41 really do have a little more integrity than half - no, 90-99% - of the shit clogging the trl airwaves.

No, that's an informed opinion, having seen Sum 41 numerous times, from someone who has been going to shows for 10 years, working as a music journalist, and playing in bands for years. In my opinion, Sum 41's live show can't match the studio wizardry they pull off. Their rhythms lag, and Deryk can't really sing at all. If having an opinion makes me a senile dixie chicks fan, then shine up my cowboy boots and kick my wheelchair over, you fuckin fuck.

I don't care what you think is cool or what you can or cannot listen to. Why don't you go listen to punk rock rule book (88 fingers). I don't claim to be punk, I just enjoy whatever I want, which just happens to be punk rock 95% of the time.
Also check out fermented reptile, some solid winnipeg hip hop with great political, social lyrics.

I'll be the first to say that I hate Sum 41.

You're the only one I know that says he likes Rise Against AND Sum 41... Not because all of my friends are "too punk" or whatnot, but because Sum 41 sucks boners. I don't at all respect them. There's no need to. Just because they're not as popular as NFG or GC doesn't mean they didn't try to be. I even heard they went on MTV to do a "video diary" or something... Yeah, how hardcore.

Oh well. You can always count on this: metal sucks.

To the reviewer: Try listening to something older than ten years.

seriously, this band IS a good band, they tour alot, they change parts of their setlist after every show and they are just alot fun live.

The latest time i saw them they went right into "you know you're right" by nirvana in the middle of in to deep, it was fun, and yeah they're a fun band.

and when i heard their latest cd for the first time, expecting it to be bland "emo", i all of a sudden realized that this bands kick some dick.
