Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Alright so last night im embarked to St. Louis to catch the bigwig and stereotyperider tour, now mind you i saw this tour sometime last year, and i wasnt impressed with Stereotyperider, or the fact bigwig had some "personal" bouncer guy. Fortunately this was not the case tonight, no bouncer guy, and a misfortunate set by Stereotyperider, which ended up making me enjoy them less.

So the show took place at the Creepy Crawl, now if any of you have been there, you know this place sucks for shows, especially shows in which National Touring acts are playing. This place cannot hold more than 300 at most and when big acts roll through, it gets terrible. The plus sides are, no barricades, no shitty bouncers, the sound is pretty decent and at least its not the Pageant.

First up "Off By One" played, never saw them before but all i can think was "man, i hope you play another good charlotte cover , or maybe mix it up with a blink 182 one" one word for this band "lame". I dont know where they were from, maybe local? Point being, if you see this band billed on a show, i warned you, unless you're a fan of pop punk, you will not enjoy this.

Its weird how everytime i have seen a show lately another band pops up last second on the bill, in this case it was "Off By One", so to get the show i wanted to see started for real, "Red Light Runners" were up next. These guys had that Fat Wreck bands sound to them, mixing it up now and then with a few amateur Reggae vibes "for the ladies", yes thats right, if you are a lady at a punk rock show you are only there for the "smooth reggae vibes" according to this band. The plus sides to their set, they gave everyone in the crowd a free cd, mine of course was knocked out of my hand and broken, i'm thinking no big loss.

Next up were our friends all the way from AZ, Stereotyperider, now if you've seen them and enjoy them good for you, but being one person who did not enjoy them last time and attempting to give them a second chance, i would have to say i was disappointed. They had way too many problems with their equpiment, so they played about 6 songs and had to call it quits, of course stacking all their guitars on each other in a pile on the front of the stage, of course with all their effects pedals turned up. Why was your equipment broken you morons? Of course this wouldnt be any in the slightest bit of an indication, would it be?

Amazing Transparent Man, is definitely the only pop punk band i can really enjoy. I dont know what it is about these guys, but they put on a great stage show, alternatiing instruments in between and playing fast paced jams. Complete with matching costumes and guitars this band is sure to have your approval if you're a fan of pop punk, or just good music. They played a cover of "Bitch" and mostly newer stuff, from the second cd, but, as always, closed with the ever popular song "Cheerleader".

And finally gracing the stage's presense was bigwig, at this point i was so burnt out from the lame movement of the crowd i decided to move up to the front and sing along. Something strange about them this time though, they were 1 man short, they informed the crowd he had broke some fingers, so of course everyone called him a pussy. Then they later informed us that they'd sound cooler if they said he "OD'd" on Heroin. So anyways, we got bigwig rockin the 3 piece, and also this time with a new drummer. Now i'm not a musical Genius, but if you're a fan of bigwig, you would know that the only original member left in the band is frontman Tom. Old or new, these guys are still amazing, they played everything i could think of from stuff off "Unmerry Melodies" to "Stay Asleep" and "Invitation to Tragedy" , also chiming in a few covers including a cover of Operation Ivy's "knowledge". All in all a good show, lame crowd, good bands, lame venue.

So if a moral needed be here, it should be don't go see shows at the creepy crawl, unless you really like the band (unfortunately this happens to me a lot) and try not to see a show with the first 2 bands on the bill.

Off By One - 2
Red Light Runners - 5
Stereotyperider - 4
Amazing Transparent Man - 8
Bigwig - 10

    My Score:

At least most bands on tour hit our city (St. Louis). And we have a handful of at least 4-5 clubs they can perform at. I have a problem sometimes affording to go to all the shows that come through. The fans might not be the best but go enjoy the shows for yourself, I guaratee we could live somewhere worse.

    My Score:

How friggin stupid, "it's a punk club the bathrooms are suppose to be dirty." What the hell does piss on the bathroom floor have to do with punk. Granted Creepy Crawl will give anyone a gig (literally), that does not make it a good venue. Walking through the crowd to go to the restroom is just retarded. The fence around the bar area is horribly inconvenient, and no the sound is not that good. But I guess someone would argue poor sound and poor floor plans are what punk venue is about. Ugh!

    My Score:

the local scene is waht you make it, if it sucks realize what is wrong and try to change it, the best scenes usually have a handful of people working hard to get bands to come and venues to have shows, orgainize your friends and make it happen. The creepy crawl is great seen alot of good shows there, to the person whinning about the bathroom, its a fucking punk venue its supposed to be dirty and dont piss on your hands and then you wont have to use the sink, but thats right blink and good charollette play in places with nice clean bathrooms so you dont have to dirty your precious self.

    My Score:

can you guys shut the fuck up? its a venue. the sound is pretty good for the headlining bands and prices are always cheap. you sound like what my 15 year old sister would say if she went to the creepy crawl. and they obviously treat bands well, considering bigwig, midtown, brand new and other bands have been/are coming soon. and if you think the stl scene sucks, i agree. besides story and new empire, there is not one good local band. but my record label will change that.

The last time I saw Bigwig, probably back at the end of last year since I missed them when they came around in February, they also played Knowledge. Their new drummer used to be in Split Fifty...I only saw Bigwig once since he joined and that instance wasn't one of their best performances. Josh was pretty damn good in the band. Too bad so much shit happened between everyone and Matt because Matt was fucking awesome too.

    My Score:

The creepy crawl is one the worst places to see a show in st. louis. The bathrooms are dirty and the sinks are usually filled with piss. They have a chain link fence that you have to keep your beer or whatever inside. And the only way to get to the shitty bathrooms(which is behind the stage) is to go through the entire crowd. I have skipped many show because they are held here. Also the scene in St. Louis sucks.

    Oh man thats right.
Let me see... ive already trashed the pageant way worse in other reviews, UMB can suck my dick, what else? oh yeah st. louis can too, scene this scene that, suck my dick, where were you when big d and the kids table showed up? Oh yeah i forgot, you probally live 5 mins from that place, i live in springfield IL and it sucks to drive a fucking hour and see some shitty show, so next time your going to slam someone about the "scene" they are not even in click on there info page.

    My Score:

That was a pretty lame and uninformative review. First off, use spellcheck. Seriously. Your poor punctuation and capitalization is an eyesore.

Secondly, the Creepy Crawl is an amazingly good venue... you're obviously just a pussy. It's intimate which I personally think is fantastic for bigger bands that come through. Everyone is nice. They've hooked up tons of my friend's bands coming through town with an opening slot or something on a gig so many times. Plus, it's just a great place to go.

The moment you form a shitty band, you'll change your tune about the Creepy Crawl in a heartbeat. They're the only ones nice enough to give you a chance at all.

Seriously, slagging one of the few strong punk backers in town isn't going to win you any friends or respect. Thus, do something for yourself and the scene and shoot yourself in the mouth.

Or just stay at the UMB Bank Pavilion or The Pagaent where you belong.

    My Score:

I was at this show and it was great. Don't let this dude give you the wrong impression, the Creepy Crawl is a GREAT venue. It's small and intimate and there's a way you can go and watch the drummer really really close (if that's what you're into). Sure it's a little hole in the wall bar with a stage but damn, it's a punk club, what do you expect, I have never failed to have fun there.

Off By One I did not enjoy at all.
Red Light Runners maybe used to be a ska band, but aren't now, as was showcased by their complete lack of brass, anyway, they were alright, better than Off By One at the very least.
Second time seeing Stereotyperider, didn't really like them either time...their songs just seems so long.
Amazing Transparent Man, second time for them too, pretty good band.
And after the hugely long wait, finally Bigwig, they played for what seemed like forever and it was crazy-good. I'd never heard them play Waiting Room before, so that was pretty fucking sweet. I had a shitload of fun during their set.
    "Everyone loves the Italian girl."

Wow! PLease don't ever review anything again in your entire life. I'm not kidding, that was terrible, you sound like a 6th grader writing a bad book report. I don't really know what else to say, it was terrible, I feel stupider just for taking time out of my life to read this damn review

Fireside show - the cover you're talking about was Fugazi's "Waiting Room", and they did a damn good job of it.

Hands down one of my favorite live acts.

    My Score:

Saw the tour in Chicago give ya mini-review.

    Fireside= Punk/hardcore heaven

The Bomb-No stage pressence and just not that good.

Much The Same-Awesome melodic punk who puts on a great show.

StereoTypeRider-Horrible live band (who seemed to play forever) but good on CD. And there bassist looks Amish.

Bigwig-Fuckin Amazing. They never cease to blow me away. Only played aboot 9-10 songs cause there was a late show and StereoTypeRider dragged balls. Did some cover that wasnt Knowledge or Minor Threat. if anyone was there i'd like to know what they covered. And to who ever wrote this review, Tom has been the only original member in the band since 2000. Matt wasnt the original Drummer. Dan who played on Un-merry Melodies was.

And to the guy that was at The Vic show. Ive seen Bigwig probolly 10 times and that was by far the worst ive seen em. Mostly cause the Vic is the worst venue ever.

    My Score:

this was one of the shittiest reviews i've read on the message board. one i don't know why someone would rip on a club so much to try to not make people want to go to anythere shows, therefore making it shittier for local bands and bands from out of town to have a good show. and secondaly, one of stereotyperiders problems was a broken bass string, in case if you don't know shit like that happens to every band. and redlight runners were a ska band and had NO Fat Wreck Chords sound at all, unless if you love the mad caddies, otherwise i wouldn't put them next to Strung Out, Rise Against, Swinging Utters, Lagwagon and so on. Also bigwig played Fugazi's waiting room, and not just that "operation ivy cover song" which for some reason no one in the crowd knew the name.

Posted by TheOneTrueBill on 2003-05-30 18:29:59
    My Score:

both times i've seen Bigwig they've done Knowledge. last time, they said "Whoever knows this song come up on stage and sing this with us." I tried my damnedest, but the bouncers at the Vic weren't having any of it.

    Good review
