A rainy friday night in Peg city.

I arrived at Le rendez Vous around 7:15. The venue is pretty large probably holds around 1500. The show wasn't sold out but the place was still pretty packed. The crowd was a good mix with everyone from 14 year old boys and girls to 30-somethings. The first band of the night was the wheat monkeys - a rock band that played a good set. There set definitely got better with every song. They played for around 20 mins, playing mostly alternative, punk and some ska and reggae tinged songs. They were fun to watch, they sounded good and their melodies were spot on. Next came Hope to Die, a Canadian hardcore band. I had not heard these guys before, and seeing the guitarist in his SOIA shirt made me wonder how well they would be received by the goldfinger fans. Well, they broke into a fast punk-hardcore set with the lead singer sounding at times like the guy from raised fist and at others like the dude from snapcase. They got the pit going fast. Their energy was excellent. They played with real heart and their enthusiasm was obvious and reflected in the crowd's appreciation of the band. I thought it was cool of goldfinger to bring this band on tour because it gives them a chance to play to a different, larger audience and also lets the kids have a taste of hardcore and perhaps a chance to get into it more. Hope to Die also promoted Winnipeg bands Figure Four, Comeback Kid and Rogue Nation saying that we were lucky to have such great bands in the scene. They are right.

Next came Story Of The Year. Now by this time I was really enjoying myself, this was turning into one of the best shows I'd seen in a while. SOTY continued the good time. These guys are going to be big. Maybe even MTV big. They sound similar in parts to Finch and The Used. They rocked hard, I definitely recommend going to see them if you get the chance. Their singer had a cool scream and a good melodic singing voice. The band jumped all over the stage. There energy was awesome. They played a tight set, all the songs were enjoyable, catchy and heavy. They got the crowd going and definitely won over many new fans. They release their debut on August 26th. They will also be at Warped this summer.

Now for the headliners. After such great opening bands it was going to take something special to top the night off. Well Goldfinger had it under control. They took a little while to take the stage which was a bit annoying but the wait was worth it. They came on, Darrin in a thong only. They started with Question which is a good fast punk song from Hangups. John leaped into the crowd and surfed around for the fist song which was cool. Then they went straight into Counting the Days, Spokesman and Here in your Bedroom. Covering ground of all their CD's. This was a cool way to start, playing some old, some new and some in between.

They also played (in no particular order):

My girlfriend's shower sucks
Miles Away
Mable(for which they invited the crowd on stage to sing)
Superman
Chris Cayton
San Simeon
Open your eyes
FTN
Wayne Gretzky(with Darrin taking lead)
Tell me

They finihed with an encore. Darrin did his eat a twinkie out of my ass trick before the band finished with 99 red balloons.

Honestly, although they played 15 songs, I wanted more. These guys have so many good songs. I would have liked some more ska songs of Hangups. They could have played another 15 great songs. But overall they put on a great show. Great opening bands, and they sounded good. John Feldmann is a cool guy. At 36 he still knows how to get the crowd moving.

jacobe: the twinkie in the ass trick involves Darrin (drummer), a twinkie, and a fan eating it out of his ass.i have a trick too. it's called the taking a shit trick. i sit on the toilet, then i take a shit, and then i flush it. don't most tricks actually involve something "tricky", as opposed to just doing something mundane and possibly stupid? here's another trick. it's called the "submit trick".

This band sucks bad. Music wise they're horrible. Their shows are lively,I give them that, but they suck. Why are they still around? Who the hell is buying their stuff?

i was talking about looks because you regarded story of the year as a boy band. normally i couldn't give a shit about how someone in a band looks, but i was arguing against the fact that you called story of the year 'basically a boy band'. was it that hard to figure out why i mentioned looks...?

    tickets were $23 canadian

yes you're the only schmuck with this opinion.
I didn't write a thesis. Resort to name calling if you want, I just stated that they played a good set. So what if they have changed. Don't be so closed-minded. I mean who cares?
There are 2 types of music:
music you like and music you don't like.
That's it. SOTY are not a bad band. I've seen countless bands with way less potential, talent, stage presence. These guys grabbed my attention with their first song, which is pretty rare with a band you've never heard of.
Why are you talking about how the singer looks. Don't be so judgemental, firstly who cares? and secondly being prejudice because of the way some one looks is not punk rock, that's just lame.
Either enjoy their music or go and listen to your 'better than thou real punk rock'.
People like you with your pointless criticisms and bogus complaints are too many in this world. Come back when you have something worthwhile to say, I'm sick of hearing the same old whining complaints from every young 'punk rocker' who suddenly knows everything about music, the industry, credibility, selling out, punk rock etc.
Grow up and get over it.

You just described the Edmonton show to a t...(the twinkie in the ass, Goldfingers set list, etc)

Hope To Die is fuckin shitty hardcore, I like hardcore,BUT they were boring as hell.

I came to see Goldfinger and I walked away as being Story Of The Years biggest fucking fan, those mutherfuckers were amazing. After the second song I bailed out of the beer gardens and straight into the pit. Everyone was going crazy the singer even jumped into the pit and started singing it was fuckin awesome. I can't wait for the debut album...

    how much were tickets?

"story of the year is essentially a boy-band with screaming. ive never seen a band so calculated for mass appeal."

Wow, you're an idiot. By your reasoning, practically every band on the mainstream market goes by your thesis, therefore making your calculation undefined. Have you seen the lead singer of SotY? The guy's not great-looking, and has one of those faces where you go, "Damn, this guy's band is ok but he looks like such an asshole..." I felt the same way the first time I saw the lead singer of PrizeFighter. Anyway, you should listen to SotY's older stuff too, boy bands don't dive into eight-minute covers of old Prince instrumentals on EPs.

Does anyone else agree with the physical features relating to the asshole comment? I know it seems weird but I want to see if I'm the only schmuck with this opinion.

'I've never seen a band so calculated for mass appeal'

    then open your eyes dumbass.
Have you ever heard of Nsync.
These guys are a hard working band, playing music they love. Don't be so bitter, if you don't like them then don't buy their stuff.
Personally, I'd rather see them on TV than nickelback, avril lavigne or Nelly.

    Anonymous (June 11, 2003)

it sounds like they played a varied set, that's cool. I love old goldfinger.

    Anonymous (June 10, 2003)

I actually thought that this was gonna be a good show, but unlike the goldfinger i saw in 98 the goldfinger I saw with story of the year just went through the motions of their "hit" songs. A band that plays for like 30 minutes and charges 30 $ for a ticket as a headliner is a joke to me. Fucking 0 commitment to the fans, period.

    bluetunehead (June 10, 2003)

story of the year is essentially a boy-band with screaming. ive never seen a band so calculated for mass appeal.

    Anonymous (June 10, 2003)

i swear this band is horrible live. i have seen them many times live and they sound horrible compared to their cd's.

and i didnt even know why anyone would want to see this band anymore. they are so washed up.

    Anonymous (June 10, 2003)

yeah but still, story of the year is awesome

    ZLNFTOC (June 10, 2003)

Nice review. One of my fondest memories
was seeing Goldfinger live. From shouting for everyone to count off 1, 2, 3, 4 in "Counting The Days" to holding the microphone out into the pit during "Question" they really get the
crowd involved. Oh yeah, they also play really loud.

    Anonymous (June 10, 2003)

Goldfinger is one of the best live bands out there.

The past couple cd's haven't been that great (Hangups in particular) but man, when you see them live, you just can't help but to love them.

    If I could, I'd give these guys a 12.

    BITTER (June 10, 2003)

    hope to die are sweet.

hmmm a twinkie out of his ass? When I saw them at Warped in Barrie last year it was a vegetarian corndog. Ah well, disturbing nonetheless. Great live band though.

    TJmoney (June 10, 2003)

I really really wanna see Goldfinger live. The past 2 times they were here I had to miss them for stupid reasons...please come to Orlando soon

    siropsycho (June 10, 2003)

Goldfinger is such a cool live band

    Anonymous (June 10, 2003)

goldfinger are a cool band with a great live show.

    Anonymous (June 10, 2003)

hate to admit, but the story of the year not only sound exactly like the used but are actually good. that one song, what the hell is it called...goddammit i gotta get some sleep...i dont know, its on the warped tour cd, like i haven't mentioned that comp ten billion times. its a rockin song.

    krowdsurf (June 10, 2003)

The last two Goldfinger albums let me down, however, every time I see them live all is forgiven. Great live band.

    chad (June 10, 2003)
