| Warped Tour 2003live in Chicago2003 live show Review by: Scott See others by this writer Exclusive pictures from this concert (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on July 1st 2003
Ah, the Warped Tour. I've been going every year since 1997 [when many of this year's attendees {and possibly bands} were still in grade school], and I've seen it's ups and downs. This year's lineup didn't look incredibly strong on paper, but as most Warped Tours do, it turns around once you're in the heat of battle. Allow me to begin my day. go to www.letterkills.com, you wont be disappointed even if you don't like tsunami bomb, trust me on this one, they play one of the best sets you'll ever see. peace greases Make sure you check out Matchbook Romance if you can. Their set was solid and we ended up seeing them at Steak and Shake (why arent more places open after 10?) after the show and they were really cool. How about we all compromise and just agree the bronx fucking rock? eh? eh? (this should get a good response) I think anybody from the original punk era would either have to be stupid or crazy to want to live in the past... When it comes down to it, living conditions were horrible, squats were fucking sick, and getting drunk every night after seeing an awesome band gets old after a while. I'm not living in the past. I just think old punk has a better sound than new... Well, it sort of is accurate. Because I for one have had at least one pair of underwear since the 7th grade. That's like... shit 5 years ago. Updates aren't always a good thing, that's true, but I think that being stuck in the past is equally as... not good. What makes the Nerve Agents better than the Ramones? I won't care to elaborate, because since I know so little, you'll just discount me anyway. Uhh... Since much music is timeless, the comparison to clothes and underwear are not really all that accurate. Updates aren't always a good thing. If music was a medical product of some sort, or a cure for cancer, maybe you're right... But it isn't. Music is music, not just the newest thing around. If you look at punk, as a musical genre, you'll see how little its evolved since its formative stages. It's been nearly thirty years since it started, and it has yet to face many dramatic changes. If you put Sex Pistols and the Clash, even the Ramones, in a modern context, you'll see that they work better than prog, or psychedelia. I think there's something to say for that, and a certain amount of respect owed to the bands that not only brought back a real rock revolution in the age of the seven minute drum solo, but paved the way for people to listen to other crap besides what's advertised on TV, radio, and Teen Beat. The Nerve Agents better than any of those bands? If that's what you honestly think, after listening to the first Ramones record, 'Nevermind the Bollocks', and the Clash self titeled, well, okay... But state what makes the Nerve Agents better than the Sex Pistols or Ramones... When you say things that you know are going to sound idiotic to a large amount of people, please care to explain them. Just because someone did something first doesn't mean they do/did it better. Just because the Clash, Ramones and Sex Pistols were the "first" punk bands doesn't make them the best. Look at Jimi Hendrix. A lot of his songs were redos of other songs, and it's my opinion that his version(s) is(are) better. Just because Linda Loveless popularized deep throating doesn't mean Heather Ideepthroat isn't any better. Not that I'd know. But anyways. Old doesn't always mean good. Fresh milk is much better than sour milk. Clean underwear is nicer than old, dirty, shitstained underwear. Get the picture? good. I dont think your elitist. I think your a asshole who feels he needs to prove to the world how much smarter then everyeon else he is. Damn fascist.. Anyway, I think No Control is my favorite BR album at the moment. I still like their new stuff though, well except The New America. No, I like Bad Religion. Of course, lately, I think they've been not-as-good, but what old band is? It's just my opinion that they're nowhere near as good as the Ramones. If you find that shocking, then, hey, I guess I'm a fascist. No need to talk shit on Bad Religion... "I like new punk, I just hate Thrice. In case you give a shit, I like bands like the Bouncing Souls, Bad Religion, The Nerve Agents, The Toasters, The Mars Volta... Not that you give a fuck" "There is no proof that Thrice is better then the clash or vice versa. Its all opinion. And your statement of "older is better" is just ridiculous, which the slavery statement was ment to point out. (get it? slavery is old? but its not better? hardy-har!) I dont even know what your trying to argue. I know the clash are more important to music then Thrice. But that doesnt make them better. Thats a matter of OPINION. If you want to insult bands that are damaging music...fine, but Thrice brings nothing but positivity to music. Think what you like, just stop insulting us because we dont concur. "Screaming metal solos are awesome. Thrice is awesome. Thrice is fun too. You my insecure friend (the bullshit detector) need to stop talking. Thrice is more talented then most of those oldschool bands. Creativity is the arguable point....and I like them better in that category too. Its just my cup of tea, so shut your fucking mouth and stop starting reasonless conflicts to further your self esteem. nice essays, too bad its all opinion. I like new punk, I just hate Thrice. In case you give a shit, I like bands like the Bouncing Souls, Bad Religion, The Nerve Agents, The Toasters, The Mars Volta... Not that you give a fuck. But yeah Rancid and the DKM own Warped tour... and Tsunami Bomb and Less Than Jake. Thrice can just go play emo metal or whatever the fuck its called, but leave me out of it. Because all this pussy emo screaming over metal, or pop punk needs to fucking die. i accidentally downloaded a highly produced video of simple plan playing american jesus a year ago. they spoke a bunch in french at the beginning so i guess it was some tv special or something in canada.. they got a lot of the words to american jesus wrong... thats weak, since REAL bad religion fans seem to have all their words memorized.. odd.. could it be that simple plan are gay and/or full of shit? Did someone really say that Limp Bizkit is a SKA band? They kick ass but they are too punk to play Ska. yeah, that anonoymous person that said sexy pat was stupid, and the thing about the buzzcocks was me, i just didnt sign in for some reason. *yawn* ahhhhH!!! rancid is old school and new school. they are one of the best punk bands of all time!!!! agree with me or die!!!! Person below: ....wow. Sexy Pat, you are not a smart man. Nothing you said applys to Thrice. Please stop pretending you know what your talking about. doesn't anyone like rancid anymore? they were totally left out of the review, except when they were described as worse than mest (????). and what about murphys? they put on a solid set. also mad caddies were rockin. this review missed some of the best bands, frankly i was pissed when i finished reading Shut the hell up. The Ramones played 3-chord pop rock. In no way did they write punk songs. Fucking Simple Plan... no wait nevermind. That's tooo harsh. My left ball is more punk rock than the Ramones. "There is no proof that Thrice is better then the clash or vice versa. Its all opinion. And your statement of "older is better" is just ridiculous, which the slavery statement was ment to point out. Think what you like, just stop insulting us because we dont concur. Ok, fuck you guys. Thrice sucks. The Clash... eh. They're.... ok. The Sex Pistols and the Ramones are two of the most terrible bands ever. Poison the Well? Please do, so this band will fucking die, and maybe every other "hardcore" band that plays metal riffs with some catchy little pussy singing that have never listened to bands like Kill Your Idols. Metal with screaming is not hardcore, it's.... well, basically it's crap. At the Seattle/Gorge stop of the warped tour, Kris Roe from the Ataris got punched right in the fucking mouth by some kids who were giving the Ataris shit during their set. It was the funniest fuckin thing I have ever seen. By the time it was all said and done, he was spitting blood. I cried I was laughing so hard. There is no proof that Thrice is better then the clash or vice versa. Its all opinion. And your statement of "older is better" is just ridiculous, which the slavery statement was ment to point out. And im telling you to shut up because you are going around trashing bands because they werent born in the 70's, while I dont insult anyone. Its pretty simple. If older is better was the truth, then id be on a plantation with my slaves picking cotton for me, while I chose who my children would marry, and beat my wife for not shining my shoes right. Things change. Older isnt always better. And just because you dont understand something doesnt make it wrong. There is no right answer here. Now stop being a dick and let us listen to our "mall punk". We obviously dont want to be "enlightened". Perhaps i do know my old school punk. Perhaps i just like the newer stuff better. We obviously dont want to be "enlightened". i was at warped in calgary, avenged sevenfold has an amazing live show, they were great, highlight of warped for me. that goes the same for you as well, you have little to base your arguement on considering your the exact opposite from me, and your wrong, a lot of bands i listen to have substance and put quality into their music :less than jake, the bosstones, the rxbandits, so dont tell me theres no substance, the truth is, music and technology are related, as technology progresses, the product becomes better but the quality might regress, in music, the sound is better, but the meaning has been lost, dont act like your some g-ds gift to punk.. you have no idea, but obviously, you prefer your music, i prefer mine. im not saying mine is any better than yours, i just prefer what i hear as opposed to the clash, the ramones, etc etc. "Screaming metal solos are awesome. "lately this website has been torn apart by arguements and what not, the same arguements that have been going on for a long time: sell outs, ska vs punk, punk vs pop, emo vs punk, pop punk vs. the world, drive thru vs punknews.org etc...im sick of these arguements, everyone has an opinion and im sure, every single band out there, talented or not, ska or punk, doesnt sit at some round table with pie charts and graphs saying this music is cool and this music is not cool we wanna manipulate kids to buy our music. we wanna sell out and be on mtv... This does not happen! and if you want to fault a band for putting out the best music they can put out and having this band gain a strong fanbase then your an idiot. leave it alone, leave all the genres alone, there all good in their respective ways, and im just as guilty of this crime as everyone else, but it takes a bigger person to realize when im wrong, im the person that made that list about 1-11 i think and yeah i like third wave ska, i like punk rock, bands like midtown, movielife, reunion show, motion city soundtrack, etc. i lvoe ska in any form except vooodooo glow skulls, so if you dont like ska then fuck you, but nothing you do or say wil change it so leave it alone and ill leave your music alone, just dont pidgeonhold these bands to a certain genre, style etc... peace, julian" No comment Stop hatin on Simple Plan, just cause they sell lots of cd's are on MTV doesn't mean they aren't punk. Nobody cares about that Bad Religion band. I have never even heard of them. They can cover any song they want because they rock. sorry i mean the list 1-12, with my "opinions" lately this website has been torn apart by arguements and what not, the same arguements that have been going on for a long time: sell outs, ska vs punk, punk vs pop, emo vs punk, pop punk vs. the world, drive thru vs punknews.org etc...im sick of these arguements, everyone has an opinion and im sure, every single band out there, talented or not, ska or punk, doesnt sit at some round table with pie charts and graphs saying this music is cool and this music is not cool we wanna manipulate kids to buy our music. we wanna sell out and be on mtv... I just hate simple plan because, besides playing instruments, I can't find a difference between them and NSYNC. When i was at warped in chicago, the guitarist got mugged by a bunch of screaming girls and it looked like he wanted to drown himself. I didn't feel sorry for him though, because, again, he willingly joined a band that plays more homoerotic music than loverboy. hey, what's grosser than gross... "I don't think I ever said the "your opinion sucks thing", thriceequalsgod just credited it to me for some reason." I don't think I ever said the "your opinion sucks thing", thriceequalsgod just credited it to me for some reason. you definitely double-posted before, i just can't find it now. one of the 2 comments was prolly taken off by scott or whatever "we all have an opinion, and mine is that your opinion sucks." "nice double posting." i dunno about the whole thrice thing "sounding the same as every other screaming/singing band" since i grew up in the same town as these guys and went to high school i can pretty much tell you that they have been doing it alot longer then any other band of that style.. at least that i know of.. i remember seeing them play a house party in irvine doing that stuff and it was long before the gay ass used ever even picked up a guitar. haha. probably not, but i thought that maybe you were referring to my overanalyzing post on the mars volta album Maybe he posted it thrice to be ironic. oh, and i agree with forty. plus the fact that thrice are one of the few bands whose songs don't sound the same. things like the chorus of "see you in the shallows" is/was never replicated, nor was the piano solo closing out one of the songs on IOS. and "cute poppy voices?" haha. these guys are the typical metalheads with almost-mullets from your high school, these guys have not derived their vocals from pop-punk bands at all, the closest they come is the aforementioned "syits" and sort of in "all thats left." cute and poppy are more describable for the likes of rufio (or just fuckin annoying) or starting line nice double posting. Well Thrice was around a little before that stuff was trendy, and I like Identity Crisis better than Illusion of Safety(everyone acts like that was their first album for some reason) anyway. I don't really think they sound like the other singing/screaming bands at all. I'm sure I'll catch some flak for defending this band, but I don't really care. Simple plan covering bad religion? What a bunch of jive-turkeys! i pity tha foo' who listens to simple plan! Thrice ARE good musicians, but they sound the same as every other "cool" new band. They use metal riffs, they scream a lot and sing with their cute poppy voice in the chorus. I liked The Illusion of Safety for the first 2-3 times I listened to it, since their sound was really familiar to me, but I quickly realised that they brought nothing that hasn't been heard elsewhere. They also lack of diversity. (read: all of their songs sound the same) I understand that someone new to the scene could get interested by this, but come on, "a masterpiece"? id just like to say something else (not my comment that i forgot): okay... for the time period of the clash, they were probably better than other musicians from the same time period that we hear today, and are considered by many groundbreaking. thrice uses intricite(sp) riffs and screaming vocals to create a new type of punk that combines metalcore and punk pop at times. i for one, think the illusion of safety is a masterpiece. the musicians in thrice are all very talented (im not saying the clash weren't), but thrice just makes it more blatent. What the fuck is with people saying kiddo now? It doesn't make your argument any stronger and it doesn't make you sound any smarter, it's just really annoying. Ok, when I wrote my comment, the one below it still wasn't there. Umm... Thrice sucks. I AM NOT (ONLY) SAYING that I dislike them. They simply suck. Yhe Clash is much better. Without a doubt. Sorry there kiddo. Thrice isnt mall punk. Thrice is art. Dont dismiss music just because it is modern. Im sure the clash were considered "just a passing trend" when they started out. Hit me back in 20 years and then we will see if Thrice got remembered or not. "Umm... i dislike the clash. I AM NOT SAYING you should not like them, or that they suck, I DISLIKE them. Thrice is much better. Without a doubt. Sorry there kiddo. Papa Roach..? Hahahaha... I must add tho.. HOW CAN ONE MISS DKM!?!?!?!?!?! Why the fuck would you miss that set????????????? Anyway even if some popier bands are making it on to warped yes its about making money, why wouldnt it be? Damn why do you think they have these things anyway? But you have to remembe that for what, 20 bucks, 25 bucks US you get to see bands all day that are pretty good.. I saw Suicide Machines, DKM, Bosstones, Green Day, Rancid, NOFX, MxPx, Papa Roach, Gob, AFI and others for like 25 bucks.. you cant beat that.. outside of warped I;d say the best show I went to was monenn, riddlin kids, brand new and face to face and that was about 20 US Simple Plan... CanCon annoying clones of the Ataris but more pathetic.. The ataris are a decent band but after listenign to them for too long meh.. Moved on and simple plan gets played all the time while bands like the flatliners (www.theflatliners.cjb.net) and other canadian punk bands are ignored (Gob being maybe the best example of a mainstream canadian punk band) Everyone needs to watch anatomy of a ghost!!!! Umm... i dislike the clash. I AM NOT SAYING you should not like them, or that they suck, I DISLIKE them. Thrice is much better. Without a doubt. Sorry there kiddo. Dropkick murphys the best bands were in this order. "www.asobrock.com .. jus correctin a typo" www.asobrock.com .. jus correctin a typo about the ASOB: "by any chance, did any of you people that attended Warped Tour see the band called "The Arrogant Sons of Bitches"? I think THEY put on the best show. This score is for their preformance.¨ oh shit i just saw the ASOB mention. yes, they are great. i've seen them um...a whopping two times now and they haven't failed me. okay that was a stupid comment but seriously they are one of the best bands i've seen live. and they are great guys with great attitudes about their scene. no one fuckin mixes genres like these dudes. they work pretty hardtoo, JT (the short guy who just yells and drinks beer onstage) is always handing out flyers at random shows and stuff, and yeah they are local but their CD prices at shows are still real cool-priced. and by cool i mean low "Plus, you contradict yourself horribly because you say "punk isn't a sound anymore", then "the Beatles are more punk than the Clash, in sound"." "Who ever wrote this review is a fucking moron "Raancid - Awful, what an ass. Have some respect for some great music even if Tim created the sorry ass transplants. " Who ever wrote this review is a fucking moron "Raancid - Awful, what an ass. Have some respect for some great music even if Tim created the sorry ass transplants. You didn't even watch the dropkick murphy's who put on a great live set. It's morons like you that are turning the warp tour into a piece trash. by any chance, did any of you people that attended Warped Tour see the band called "The Arrogant Sons of Bitches"? I think THEY put on the best show. This score is for their preformance. Did Poison the Well play anything new? If so, how was it? I didn't like the MP3s very much. Being there, I'd have to say its very much alive, no matter what the fat emo girls and the Sum 41 fans would have you believe. Is Rise Against on the main stage for the entirety of their part of the tour or were they only on it because this was Chicago? Careful with the Limp Bizkit comments, certain people can't grasp sarcasm. 'old sugar ray is awesome. go listen to lemonade and brownies' Limp Bizkit is a great ska band. Warped needs to have them back again. Recipe For Hate era Bad Religion doesn't suck... thrice makes me tingle where i pee bEST BANDS ON WAROED: warp tour is offically dead. it has been for almost seven years, this was just the last nail in the coffin. i read this review up untill i read that simple plan covered bad religon. i just became to sick to read anymore. that era of bad religon sucks anyway, leave it to a shity mtv band to cover a shitty bad religon song and think its cool. i want to fuckin die soon. "goin simple on this one.. mest sucks. i hope they suffer violent diarrhaea for the rest of their lives. |
