Ah, the Warped Tour. I've been going every year since 1997 [when many of this year's attendees {and possibly bands} were still in grade school], and I've seen it's ups and downs. This year's lineup didn't look incredibly strong on paper, but as most Warped Tours do, it turns around once you're in the heat of battle. Allow me to begin my day.

With my younger sister in tow, we took in the Ataris' early afternoon performance. I've been a fan of this band for much too long to have never seen them live before now, and I enjoyed their quick half hour. They opened with "I Won't Spend Another Night Alone," played "Boys Of Summer" and "In This Diary" somewhere in the middle, and predictably closed with "San Dimas High School Football Rules" [with one of the guys from Simple Plan filling in on guitar instead of the usual audience member participation]. The band also threw in some more oldies like "Your Boyfriend Sucks," and it was enough to make me feel 16 again. It was a nice way to kick off the day.

We quickly hustled offstage and over to one of the side stages where we caught Damone in mid-set. What the band lacked in stage presence they made up for in killer guitar riffs. "At The Mall" ripped, and the band's set closing cover of Weezer's "You Gave Your Love To Me Softly" sounded like it was meant to be sung by a girl all along. Highly enjoyable.

At this point, the next band we wanted to see wasn't for another hour or so, so merchandise shopping we went [after catching the opening notes of the Unseen, and realizing that we had already heard three songs but they all sounded the same]. As I bought my Potshot/Suicide Machines split EP [limited edition! Japanese import! Only available in Japan or at the Warped Tour!], I heard the sounds of the Dropkick Murphys wafting over the merch tents. I recognized "Fields Of Athreny" as well as "Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight," and I'm assuming the band went over fairly well as many an Irish flag was seen waving in the pit.

After spending too much money, it was back to one of the main stages to see hometown boys Rise Against tear shit up. The band's first "real" Warped appearance [last year they commandered the end of Death By Stereo's set for a quick three songs] was well anticipated, as the crowd grew larger and larger with each passing minute. Tim and company took the stage to an immense round of cheers, and they ruled the school for a half hour straight, kicking it off with "Black Matches and Gasoline." Older stuff like "1000 Good Intentions" and "Alive and Well" were whipped out as well as stuff off Revolutions Per Minute like "Blood Red White and Blue" and "Like The Angel." Traditional set closer "Six Ways 'Til Sunday" ended the rock show, and while I must deduct points for the lack of "Gethsamane," they still earned high marks.

Glassjaw was up next.

Glassjaw was fucking siiiiiiiiiiick, bro.

Sorry, thought I was from Long Island for a second. But seriously, Glassjaw was sick. Their all-too-short 7 song set was highlighted by a new song called "Natural Born Farmer," which blew me [and most of their audience] away. Their entire setlist:
Tip Your Bartender
Mu Empire
Ape Dos Mil
The Gilette Calvacade of Sports
Cosmopolitan Bloodloss
Natural Born Farmer
Siberian Kiss

So yeah, Glassjaw slayed. As the last of their feedback rang out, I hauled ass over to the Suicide Machines, where their action-packed set was already underway. I jumped into the pit for the first [and last] time of the day, and marvelled at the band's diversity. All 5 albums were covered:
Destruction By Definition - New Girl, Break The Glass
Battle Hymns - DDT, Someone
S/T - Permanent Holiday
Steal This Record - All My People, Honor Among Thieves
A Match and Some Gasoline - Did You Ever Get A Feeling Of Dread?
They probably played more, but that's all my noise-addled brain can recall at this time. All in all, the Machines were highly entertaining and seemed amazed at the overly positive response they got.

So after I got thoroughly sweaty in the skank/mosh pit, I went over to meet my sister who was watching Rufio. After she filled me in on the bands she watched [Mest - "okay," Rancid - "awful," Bowling For Soup - "terrible"], we watched the California quartet do their thing. Again, I'll begrudgingly admit that their music is good, but please, replace the singer. He's seriously holding you back. The amount of pre-pubescent gash watching these guys was absolutely amazing - I could've picked up any one of them simply by saying "hey baby, I can buy you cigarettes and beer legally." Anyway, I know the band played "Countdown," "White Lights," and "Set It Off," and some older stuff that sent the crowd completely apeshit. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Finding myself with another hour of downtime until Andrew WK, we wandered around some more. As I bought up old 22 Jacks CDs at the SideOneDummy booth [they're only 5 bucks each! What a steal!], I overheard Simple Plan on the main stage.

And then I heard Bad Religion on the main stage.

That's right, everyone's favorite Canadian pop-punk band was covering Bad Religion's "American Jesus." As my jaw dropped in horror, I looked at the S1D merch guy. He just shook his head. I asked if this was a daily occurance, and he nodded in assent. Wow. Simple Plan needs to die, and soon.

So after being aurally raped, there was only one hope - that the audio messiah himself, Andrew WK, would baptize me with his blood, sweat, and partying. He did all of that and more.

I don't want to go into detail on just how amazing my Andrew WK experience was. Basically, here's the short version - he got my sister and I up onstage, where we enjoyed such AWK classics as "Girl's Own Love," "Ready To Die," and "She Is Beautiful." The crowd chanted multiple times for "We Want Fun," and Andrew obliged with a ripping version of the Jackass: The Movie Soundtrack single. He even featured a new song called "Your Rules" that will be on his upcoming album called The Wolf coming out on September 9th, and I Was singing along by the end of it [like any good AWK song]. As the set drew to a close with "Party Hard" followed by "I Get Wet," Andrew beckoned all of us stodgy press types in the wings out on stage, where we danced it up like there was no tomorrow. If you were watching, and saw a tall fat man in a blue shirt and khaki shorts pick up Andrew, that was yours truly.

Basically, Andrew WK was fucking amazing. I could talk about how wonderful he was for many more paragraphs, but I hope you'll just go see him yourself and realize just how amazing and inspirational a person he really is.

Thrice was up next on the other main stage, but I was much too tired to get up close, so I hung back and caught the last few songs of their set from a distance. They sounded tight as hell, and there was many a raised fist in the front of the crowd, shaking along with every cymbal crash. Their metal riffs were the perfect end to my day.

So I didn't get to see everyone I wanted to see, and I especially was biased against smaller bands today [giving pretty much every smaller band I even considered checking out the shaft]. So I ask you to pick up my slack - go watch Anatomy of a Ghost and Vaux, both bands are amazing. With that said, I can safely say that this was the most fun I've had at a Warped Tour ever. Go. Don't miss Rise Against, Glassjaw, or Andrew WK. They were easily the best three bands I saw.

[Oh, and in case you were wondering, no one came up to me and asked for free stuff, so I just ended up chucking it all offstage during the Andrew WK last song melee.]

I think anybody from the original punk era would either have to be stupid or crazy to want to live in the past... When it comes down to it, living conditions were horrible, squats were fucking sick, and getting drunk every night after seeing an awesome band gets old after a while. I'm not living in the past. I just think old punk has a better sound than new...

Well, it sort of is accurate. Because I for one have had at least one pair of underwear since the 7th grade. That's like... shit 5 years ago. Updates aren't always a good thing, that's true, but I think that being stuck in the past is equally as... not good. What makes the Nerve Agents better than the Ramones? I won't care to elaborate, because since I know so little, you'll just discount me anyway.

    To quote John Cusack:

How can it be bullshit to state a preference?

    Oh wait, yeah. I forgot.

    My Score:

Uhh... Since much music is timeless, the comparison to clothes and underwear are not really all that accurate. Updates aren't always a good thing. If music was a medical product of some sort, or a cure for cancer, maybe you're right... But it isn't. Music is music, not just the newest thing around. If you look at punk, as a musical genre, you'll see how little its evolved since its formative stages. It's been nearly thirty years since it started, and it has yet to face many dramatic changes. If you put Sex Pistols and the Clash, even the Ramones, in a modern context, you'll see that they work better than prog, or psychedelia. I think there's something to say for that, and a certain amount of respect owed to the bands that not only brought back a real rock revolution in the age of the seven minute drum solo, but paved the way for people to listen to other crap besides what's advertised on TV, radio, and Teen Beat. The Nerve Agents better than any of those bands? If that's what you honestly think, after listening to the first Ramones record, 'Nevermind the Bollocks', and the Clash self titeled, well, okay... But state what makes the Nerve Agents better than the Sex Pistols or Ramones... When you say things that you know are going to sound idiotic to a large amount of people, please care to explain them.

Just because someone did something first doesn't mean they do/did it better. Just because the Clash, Ramones and Sex Pistols were the "first" punk bands doesn't make them the best. Look at Jimi Hendrix. A lot of his songs were redos of other songs, and it's my opinion that his version(s) is(are) better. Just because Linda Loveless popularized deep throating doesn't mean Heather Ideepthroat isn't any better. Not that I'd know. But anyways. Old doesn't always mean good. Fresh milk is much better than sour milk. Clean underwear is nicer than old, dirty, shitstained underwear. Get the picture? good.

By the way, Jimi kicks AC/DC's ass. Rock.

Ohhhh... So, basically new bands that rip off old bands, but not the old bands that did it first... Wow, you're smart. I think Thrice sucks more than the Bouncing Souls, but if you're gonna say the Clash are only "okay" but go and love the Bouncing rip off Souls, it just proves you've never heard much of them. I don't give a fuck... But out of the 5 bands you mentioned, none of them are as good as the Ramones. Sorry. Saying Bad Religion is better than the Ramones is like saying AC/DC is better than Jimi Hendrix. Have your crappy taste, all you've done is proven that you know nothing about music.

I know I come off as an "elitist", but, this is the internet, and I really don't care. Also, most people who call me "elitist" are just trying to cover up for the fact that they don't know as much as me about music. Come up with something new, please.

But, once again, please don't voice your idiotic opinion on things. I bet you haven't even very many old bands' songs, and therefor have no place to talk. Oh, big boy, give yourself a pat on the back. You're so tough for admitting you're a jackass. If I remember, you said "old school sucks"... Well, there went your credibility. Of course a fan of fuckin' pop-rock isn't gonna like real bands like the Clash, I'm not gonna bother trying to convince you that you'd like them, because you wouldn't. It's like trying to get a Britney Spears fan to like actual music... Please don't act like you like real, respectable music, though, like that ThriceequalsGod kid or Inagreendase. All the bands you like are a bunch of kids who listen to punk, and their music is rather uninspired, but hey, that's your taste. A lot of my friends only like trendy crap music, too, I don't really mind, but I don't read them bragging about it on the internet, or hear them talking about it, either.

You still don't get it... I don't dismiss Thrice because they're new... I dismiss them because they aren't very good. Musicianship has proven to be the fuckest, dumbest reason to like a band. I play guitar, and I can play actual non-power chords, so does that make me better than Joey Ramone or Joe Strummer? No...

And, plus, the fucks in Thrice could never hope to make any solos as interesting as Mick Jones's. Ultra complicated? Maybe not, but they sound really good, and not all showy offy/ screamy metally like Thrice. I don't have a problem with Thrice fans, just Thrice fans who think the Clash suck compared to post-90's trash... I'm sorry, but that's just my opinion.

Thrice are just not as fun, catchy, or real as the Clash... They're a bunch of young kids who don't listen to anything older than 20 years. A bunch of newbies.

And my opinion is that you and your opinion suck eac other at night.

Thrice ARE good musicians, but they sound the same as every other "cool" new band. They use metal riffs, they scream a lot and sing with their cute poppy voice in the chorus. I liked The Illusion of Safety for the first 2-3 times I listened to it, since their sound was really familiar to me, but I quickly realised that they brought nothing that hasn't been heard elsewhere. They also lack of diversity. (read: all of their songs sound the same) I understand that someone new to the scene could get interested by this, but come on, "a masterpiece"?

BTW, I wrote kiddo because I wanted to get your attention on the arrogance of that guy below who thinks that "without a doubt", Thrice (the flavor of the month) is "much better" than The Clash (the rock and roll legends). Hum...

Okay, when random mall punk's opinions start to effect history in the long run, the world will really start to suck... even worse. See how many people will be listening to Thrice in thirty years, or even how many albums they'll have put out that will be remembered as masterpieces of rock...

Please, all of you saying "I've heard one Clash song and think they aren't good" kids, I challenge you to actually name the song and which album it's from.

All of the Clash albums were so diverse, let me tell you what they're all like:

S/T (UK version)- The most musically inspirational straight punk album in the history of punk rock... If you don't own this in one form or another, you really can't say you like real punk rock.

Give'em Enough Rope- Longer songs, still mostly punk, but with a reggae-ish edge. This record got shit when it came out because of supposed "over-production", but you can't hear that in a modern context.

London Calling- What most refer to as their masterpiece. They were now really out of their punk stage, evolving into a band that could play nearly any form of music... This is one of the most diverse albums ever made. This is essential in any rock collection.

Sandanista!- Here, the band's starting to fall apart... This is still a good, solid album, if not too fuckin' long. A lot of dub reggae songs, and even a few hip hop numbers. Good, but not great.

Combat Rock- This is the end of perhaps the greatest punk band of all time... And what a shitty way to go out. Not very good at all. Better in a modern context because it's not as bad as most modern pop-punk albums, but it's still pretty dissapointing to any Clash fan.

Cut the Crap- The Clash without Mick Jones or Topper Headon? Cut the crap, Joe, this album sucks.

And there you have it... Give them a try.

when i say there is no punk, i mean what punk was considered 15 years ago is nothing of what it is today; there isn't even one specific punk genre. its all subgenres (emo, ska, hardcore), but i guess you would consider the major genre 'punk'..

    "goin simple on this one..

i really dont think thrice are god,
theyre just a really good band. if you listen to them, you can hear that. i am not a fan of old school, or a teeny bopper. i heard one song by the clash, and it was horrible. from that one song, and the fact that i dont really like that kind of music, i made my opinion. lets hope that im wrong on that one, because id hate to think that most the music i listen to have influences that go back to that time/genre.

i prefer newer music more than anything.. in fact i dont listen to much music at all that came out before 1990.. i do listen to some though (old nofx, br, cant think of any others)

so there you have it. you can just call me really biased, because i am. i am open to new types of music, but if i dont like it, im not gonna pretend to. sorry if i offended you, it was a stupid post that i didn't think about when i wrote, and i knew something was wrong with it when i posted it."

Biased! I don't know one Clash song off London Calling that isn't ten times better than any one Thrice song... Trust me, I have all of the Thrice albums...

Ummmm... And if you listen to the Clash, you can hear that they're ten times better than Thrice. Plus, you contradict yourself horribly because you say "punk isn't a sound anymore", then "the Beatles are more punk than the Clash, in sound"... Besides being untrue, you used "punk" as an adjective... Dirty mofo... And if you're looking for the Clash sounding "punk"... Get their first album (UK Version)

I listen to new and old punk... I love a lot of stuff besides punk, too. I'm probably one of the least biased people who use this site.

Bottom line: If you're going to judge "old school", actually listen to it. Listen to stuff before 1990 (besides Epitaph) and THEN judge it. From what you wrote, I gathered that you had maybe watched the Great Rock n Roll Swindle and heard one song off of London Calling.

    P.S.
Inagreendase, you lost your credibility looong ago.
