Published on July 8th 2003

Warped in Calgary was almost a no go after a severe hail, lightning and thunderstorm attacked the area.

However, things cleared up and the motor city speedway was ready for punk rock. The speedway is filled with dust which had quickly turned to mud and wet ground. This signalled the crust punks who were out in an unusual abundance to wrestle in the mud and make fools of themselves. I arrived with my friends, who had driven out for the show from manitoba, just as the ataris were playing. I couldn't believe it! The Ataris were playing at 1:30, I missed most of their set but got inside to see them play 'Boys Of Summer' and 'San Dimas'.

After this I checked the board listing bands and was quite disappointed to note thet not only were Pennywise and AFI missing but The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Bowling for Soup and Mest had failed to make the treck to calgary. Canada got the shaft.

I wasn't impressed, I mean you pay the same price for every date yet half the main stage bands were absent. That sucked. Anyway after the initial disappointment of missing the Ataris and finding out about the lack of big bands, I checked out the merch and tried to get free stuff which was also pretty much non-existent.

Anyway, despite the short comings of this date, Warped is what you make of it. There were plenty of hot girls, the weather was warm and there were plenty of hot girls.

I checked out Rufio, who were pretty good, I hadn't heard any of their stuff before but I enjoyed their fast poppy punk.

Next band I saw was the Mad Caddies on the main stage. These guys are amazing, they never fail to rock the entire crowd. Chuck is an amazing front man with a great voice and they are all excellent musicians. They played stuff off all their releases and got the crowd dancing. It was great I recommend these guys to anyone. Pick up 'Duck and Cover' or 'Just One More', these are there best release in my opinion.

So, for me, The Mad Caddies were the band of the day.

Next I saw Avenged Sevenfold on the volcom stage. they were cool, mixing so many different types of music and playing some especially catchy hardcore. Definitely worth a look.

After this I watched Simple Plan, this was hilarious. they were pelted with bottles and mud, and one of their guitarists got hit in the gut.

After a while I felt sorry for these guys as they were obviously hated by 90% of the crowd. Why did they played Warped?

They covered "American Jesus". I couldn't believe it. It takes balls to cover Bad Religion in front of thousands of already hateful punks.

Whatever, their stuff is not punk but its catchy and I felt bad for the guys.

I also saw the Suicide Machines who ripped it up, they were second best show of the day. Go to see them and experience the 'Braveheart'. They played lots of old stuff and everyone moshed and sang along.

Thrice were good, as were Poison the Well. It was cool seeing some heavier bands on the mainstage. Poison the Well, are worth seeing, their stage energy is awesome and their vocalist is amazing.

Next came Rancid. I'm not a big fan but it was cool to see "Radio" and "Ruby Soho" live. They looked exactly how I imagined - leather and mohawks.

I missed The Dropkick Murphys and Face to Face but both bands drew huge crowds and sounded good from across the speedway.

The last band I watched was Less Than Jake, who are one of my favorite bands. they played quite a bit of new stuff, which is really good, as well as some oldies. All in all they sounded great live and really put on a good show with a cool party feel. There's nothing like ska in the summertime.

I left before Andrew WK, because I'm not a big fan, but from what i heard crossing the parking lot he sounded pretty wild, repeatedly chanting his name, and rocking hard.

Overall Warped in Calgary was fun, not as strong a line up as last year but still worth checking out.

I discovered 2 new bands: Avenged Sevenfold and Matchbook Romance. I also missed Glassjaw's set but I had to eat. (if you go to warped make sure you get your food and drink coupons early so that you're not waiting in line for ever.)

Bands - 7/10
Atmosphere - 8/10
Girls 9/10.

i've really grown out of rancid, but i still think Matt Freeman is the one of, if not the, best bassist in punk. I came to that understanding when I was taking lessons from this guy that was huge into funk and hated punk, but when he heard rancid he just said "whoa... that guys good" and stared at the stereo. it was amusing.

    My Score:

No need to apologize, it's all a matter of opinion here, and coincidentally, I play bass also, and while I agree, Matt is grossly over-rated by kids, he still deserves the praise he recieves. I mean, he's no Jaco, Miller, or Brunel, but he's definitely a note-worthy bassist, especially for his influence on kids who're learning to play bass and want to listen to something that's not jazz.
I personally don't love his work but you've gotta respect Matt for being one of the few "punk rock" bassists that's willing to play a solo that isn't a simple note progression but *gasp*, a simply fast note progression.

    Peace,

    My Score:

I'm sorry, but I see no purpose in apologizing for bashing Rancid. Seriously, it was like the "popular punk band" scene police just reprimanded me, and their explenations were mediocre at best. "Rancid 2k" was a step back, to me. When a band starts out doing street punk/oi, then ska-punk/Clash-rip-off punk, then dub, then, just to prove they're still "hardcore", they make an album that sounds like a cheap immitation of their first... That's a step back. Sorry guys, but I do know what I'm talking about. I'm a bass player, actually, and to say that "Matt Freeman is the greatest bassist" is just ridiculous.

"That's actually pretty funny, cause if you hate Matt for playing scales, I suppose you must hate nearly all Bass Players and Guitar players who compose their music based off of scales, arpeggio's, different modes, and chords, "just to sound fancy"."

I don't hate Matt Freeman, I'm just saying he's grossly overrated among young bassists. He takes dub basslines and speeds them up. Not interesting to me at all. I can think of many other bassists who made much simpler music, but sounded more melodic, as well as danceable.

Thus far, I've only heard "Fall back Down" off Indestructible and that song just fucking owns. August 26th is going to be a great day.

To call Rancid unoriginal is just being ignorant. That band has done it all and it doesn't matter if they've ripped off The Clash at times. Every band has ripped somebody else off, and you are a lying sack of shit if you think otherwise. Geez, at least they were ripping off the Clash and not some shitty no talent hacks.

Hardcore, reggae, punk, rock-a-billy, this band is continually expanding it's horizons. To say R2k was a "step back" is just absurd. Everybody ripped on them for not playing hard or fast enough anymore, and they did. Harder and faster than people thought. And for the amount of critical acclaim this band continually recieves on each album and for them pushing the boundries of punk, or the lack of right now, I think they deserve to be arrogant.

Rancid is one of the few bands that even keeps me interested in the punk scene anymore. They are just a flat out, a great band. And deserve some respect for their great contributions over the past decade.

That's actually pretty funny, cause if you hate Matt for playing scales, I suppose you must hate nearly all Bass Players and Guitar players who compose their music based off of scales, arpeggio's, different modes, and chords, "just to sound fancy".

If you have the ability to play the solo's Matt plays (which are conincidentally rising and dimishing scales, for Axiom at least) at the same speed, or even half the speed, i'd be impressed.

Well if 90% of Rancid fans weren't in denial (I'm not saying you are) that they are totally unoriginal, I might like them a bit more. And lately they've been acting like they're the new gods of punk rock... Yeah, right. I can think of so many better new bands than Rancid. And that Lars hillbilly guy is the most annoying person in the world. He has the only voice I prefer Tim's wannabe English singing voice to. He also says Good Whatsthename and NFG and the rest of that poppy class are the new punk bands... Yeah, right. It looks like Rancid are out to destroy the little credibility they have left in the scene... They got on MTV just because they looked the part while countless numbers of more talented and original bands get overlooked for that kind of publicity every day. All of these wannabe bass players think Matt Freeman is a musical genious. Look, it isn't hard to do that stuff. Freeman plays in scales, just to sound fancy. There are so many reasons to hate Rancid for me...

Rancid are way overrated anyway. Nothing about their music hasn't already been covered by some other band (especially the Clash). The "2000" album was the worst... Talk about stepping back. I liked some of the stuff off of the one before their last one... Oh well, it's really on the most basic level "kiddy punk". Just spikes and leather, and stereotypical lyrics and music. No substance for someone who has a real music collection.

'"Several Canadian government departments are blatantly aiding and abetting the export of a wide variety of Canadian military hardware to governments that are widely known to be engaged in war and/or that are violently repressing domestic human rights, including labor rights.  Canadian weapons systems are being used by many governments in the commission of crimes against peace, crimes against humanity and war crimes.  This makes the Canadian government an accomplice to these crimes,"  says COAT coordinator Richard Sanders.'

Found this on http://coat.ncf.ca/articles/links/media_release_april_25.html, and also don't forget Canadien troops were fighting alongside americans in Afganistan, no country is perfect. A lot countries do bad things but you never hear about them. Thats because most people look for problems with the US because its the big "dominate" country. Its kind like last week when Kobe Bryant got accused of sexual assault, it was all over the news. But if it was say the backup point guard for the Jazz that got in trouble, noone outside of Utah would know about. But yeah the US has done a lot of horrible things though.

And back to the size of Canadas military. They put about 1.2% of their GDP into their military, and their total GDP is $722.3 billion. Meanwhile the US put 3.2% of their GDP into the military and their total GDP is 9.255 trillion. So that would mean the US' military is about 4 and one half the size of Canadas. But then again the United states' military is oversized and over funded. But lets just say Canada wouldn't last a week if attacked by nazi germany.

"Yes soybomb, I've been to warped, probably not as many as you. 2 was my limit, the 1st warped and the 2nd"

Wow, I guess we have something in common.

"Whether you like it or not, your government represents the american people's interest with its policies. We all know they don't, but for the record, your government is absolutely FUCKED."

You keep referring to the United States government as "my" government... Get it straight, I do not own political America, I just live within it. As far as the government doing what's in the "people's interest", that's bullshit. If they DID do what was in our interest, they would have never sent troops to Iraq, listened to the millions of protesters who's voices were muted, and they'd focus on internal improvements that would help the homeless and such. The American government is "fucked" and it's because of idiots in charge pushing their personal agenda's ahead of what the citizens of the country need. Too bad that's the way it's been for overly too long.

"Also, since you want to get 'technical' that everything I support is coporate, it simpley just isn't the case."

I see you're on a computer. You're using the internet.

"You must be relatively new to the punk scene, seeing as 'corporate' is something that has unfortunately made its way into the scene. The old school punk was never in support for corporate business, although, it seems according to you, its the punk way now."

Oh yeah, I'm "relatively new", I only started listening to punk after hearing "The Best Of Me"... The hypocrisy of the "punk community" is incredible, corporations are evil if they're not liked by "the punx"...
The "punk community" is a joke now. It's basically a bunch of elitists running around spouting off what people can and can't listen to in attempt to look bad ass. Ah well.

By the way, read my initial post below to read my stance on all this pro/anti American/Canadian sentiment.

Maybe we aren't that dumb, just jealous of countries with more rights than ours. Since "9/11", as I reluctantly and redundantly call it, America has become a fascist country which resembles pre-WW2 Germany in more than a few ways.

Well, here's and update from an American who doesn't watch corporately biased news stations: The rest of the civilized world hates us. Unless you count Micronesia. The only fuck in Britain who was pro-war was Blair. This is crazy. How can you honestly bother to ask "what has America done wrong to the rest of the world?". Is that a joke? I guess you missed my point.

The terrorist comment was made just to point out that if anything bad happened in Canada, America would be the first to help. Be it a natural disaster, economic hardship, whatever, the US would lend a hand.

And the army comment was not made in a negative light, either. Those are just the facts. Hell, if the US could get away with not having an army and spending the money on something that betters the quality of life for its citizens, than it would. Those are just realities.

And the Expos are a sweet team, its a fact that a small handful of american businessmen alienated the fanbase and therefore destroyed the team, just in hopes of getting it to Washington DC.

Relax, all my comments weren't negative, they were just points I was trying to make in order to defend America. I don't understand why everyone hates the US and says "Americans are fucking stupid". Do you really think all 200 something million of us walk around with guns blazing and rape women all day long? Some people honestly think all American cities are like a great big game of grand theft auto... This is a terrible review. Plain and simple, this reviewer has absolutely no clue about anything. Missing Glassjaw's set for a bite to eat? That should be punishable by law...whether or not you like their music, their live show should not be missed.

The reviewer also failed to mention one of the highlights of the show was during Simple Plan's set when the band was being hailed on with water bottles. Instead of flipping out like the prima donnas we all assume they are, the band firmly stated that if anyone had a problem with them they could come up to the stage and bring it up with them. No one uttered a word, and things carried on like normal with the band even noting that they still loved Calgary. That's a hell of a lot classier than most bands would have been.

Another hole in Jo-Jo's review was that Bowling For Soup didn't play. This is a gross inaccuracy because sure enough the Bowling For Soup guys were on the Ernie Ball stage around 5 p.m.

If you're going to review a show, have the sense to at least know your facts if you're not going to be aware enough to note the actual interesting events that happen at it.

One thing I don't understand is Canadians resentment towards Americans. Often I am treated rudely when I am in Canada just because I am American (people actually will tell me this), but I am not doing anything disrespectful or rude.

I wish those Canadians with a chip on their shoulder would realize that their better living environment can be contributed alot to what USA does. Canada barely has a standing army and is protected by their neighbor to the south, allowing them to spend the money that would otherwise go to an Army to other things that actually improve the quality of life. There are other examples too. Basically, Canada piggybacks off the US in a lot of ways. I don't have a problem with it and neither do most Americans, but at least show some respect for the US.

And if some jackass terrorist struck in Canada for whatever reason, or there was any kind of conflict that needed to be taken care of, our 'rendeck' president would be the first one to help.

The two people that posted below about how much Canada sucks just prove how dumb and ignorant some of you americans can be. You are just as dumb as your fuckin idiot president. We did get the shaft on the bands and so what if people like Mest or the used, just because it is not some shitty punk outfit like rancid who are just another average band who did get lots of play on MTV back in the 90's or another hardcore group with a singer who can only scream cuz his voice sucks ass. You punker than thou punks annoy me, by the way looking like a skid does not make you punk. Fuckers!

rancid played a new song in vancouver. it was very reminiscent of out come the wolves, back to the straight up punk style with no frills, gimmicks, or crazy steel drums/weird noises.

can't blame any of the bands who skipped this venue, it is canada after all and who would want to go there? I also find it hilarious that simple plan got pelted with bottles of mud in there own country. I can only imagine what we're gonna do to them when they come back to the states. and i do not feel sorry for them, they deserve every bottle they got and many more.

I was there and in my opinion we didnt get the shaft at all. Listen to pennywise whine about the circle pit not being big enough or how the border treated their celeberty asses badly... no thanks. Seeing all the trendy AFI fans pretend like they have been there since day one... no thanks. All of you should be thankful that the two best bands on this tour were there and put on amazing sets as expected. Iam talking about The Suicide Machines and Thrice, out.

avenged sevenfold. once again, highlight of my warped... then thrice, the rest i'd seen before or couldn't care less about seeing, rufio's put on better shows... andrew wk got pretty intense but he was singing like some creepy metal freek, octave lower growling instead of singing, that threw me off.
    ltj, boring
ataris, they were fun i guess
rancid, the crowd was huge and i don't really like their music
s.t.u.n not my cup of tea, i caught the whole set, and did not enjoy a single song, i think i hated it in fact
simple plan, people were throwing shit, not funny, wasn't good anyways, but they looked liek they were having fun... so did the first like 20 rows of people
slick shoes, i swear they were faster
tsunami bomb, got so boring soo quick, the chick kinda walked around on teh stage
ptw, they were pretty cool, sound guy made them sound amazing, best sound of the whole day.
i dont' remember what else i saw... but face to face, seen em before, vowed to never see them again, i ended up seeing them again
all in all, some good some bad, the worse of all was the hail and rain... that sucked... and the mud, and the dirty gutterpunks

probably not any new rancid. judging from their warped set 2 years ago, they wont'. they get 30 minutes. thats about 12 songs for rancid. they have to play ruby soho, roots radicals, radio, nihlism, something off the first album, proably 2 more off aoctw. that leaves them 5 songs to play from life wont wait, rancid 2000 and the new one. u might hear one new song if your lucky (or unlucky if u think that it sux.) me personally, when i see rancid, i want to hear the old shit.

I was there and it was alot better than what the reviewer said:

Ataris were really good but they played ALOT of new stuff. Setlist in no particular order:
I Wont Spend Another Night Alone
    Takeoffs And Landings
    Boys Of Summer
    So Long Astoria
    San Dimas Highschool Football Rules
and a bunch more that i forget...

Thrice played kick ass. There was no pit and then it slowy slowly began to build then, it was insane, people were going off. The highlights of their set were "Deadbolt" and "Kill Me Quickly".

Suicide Machines were the best band of the day. From what I remember the setlist consisted of:
    Someone
    Break the Glass
    Honor Among Thieves
Did You Ever Get A Feeling Of Dread
    Burning in the Aftermath
    DDT
    So Long
Hands fucking down these guys were the best nad of the day, the singer kept jumping off the stage and throwing us the mic. So much energy from a great band. The new songs sound so good live, you have to see these guys.(pick up the new disc if you havent, it fucking rocks).

Rancid was amazing as well. They played:
The Wars End(my favorite of the whole set because they played it hella slow)
    Ruby Soho
    Radio
    Roots Radicals
    She's Automatic
Time Bomb(not that good, most dissapointing song of the set"
Maxwell Murder(Matt Freeman=best bass solo EVER)

Less Than Jake played ok, they were fun but they played sloppy. For some reason Chris's mic was turned down a bit... This what they played in the exact order,I snagged the setlist :)
Gainesville Rock City(best song of the set)
All My Best Friends Are Metal Heads
    Johnny Quest
Help Save The Youth of America From Exploding
The Ghosts of You And Me
    Boring Town
    Science Of Selling Yourself Short
    Look What Happened
    Welcome To The New South

I was there this year and I have to say that it was a pretty good time. Calgary got seriously shafted on the bands though. Since some of the bigger bands didn't come we get the joy of hearing audio poo such as Slick Shoes and Rufio back to back mid afternoon. It does make for a nice break to go check out the other attractions. Oh wait, Calgary doesn't get an other attractions. No slide and slide, motorcycle jumping, that steel cage thing they got going. Barely any athletes were going on the ramp too. I don't know why it is like that in Calgary every year. I've seen the Warpedtour in Toronto, Barrie, Minneapolis, Calgary, Sommerset Wisc. and the Calgary one is the worst run one of them all. No free yoohoo, No outside sealed water allowed in the gates, no digital cameras, no fuckin Claritin for those with allergies. I just wish that they would just run the same setup in every city.

And you didn't see AWK. For Shame!!!

Sounds like Calgary lucked out, to me.
I've always had more fun catching the side stages at Warped. There are some really interesting acts that I'd never heard of, and bands that I wouldn't go out of my way to see at a club, playing at any given time. Last year, I barely got to the main stage at all.
I think this kid is pretty representative of your average Warped attendee these days. It's a theme park where kids get to dress up for a day and feel like they're doing something dangerous and rebellious.
