Reviews

The highly anticipated new album from hard-core punkers Mest hit stores about a month ago, and recieved no fanfare or hoopla from anyone on this site. After sufficiently listening to this, their thrid Maverick release, it is safe to say that I can now make an accurate value judgement of these 13 pulse pounding and genre-shaping tracks.

Right away, "Until I Met You" blazes out of the gates with NOFX-type speed, Thrice-like riffs, and Pennywise-esque anger. "Rooftops" is a classic how-it-used-to-be tune, much in the same vein of Less Than Jake. With the passion of Thursday, lead singer Tony Lovato croons "It's times like these that I miss you most, remembering when we were so close." The dynamic vocal range of Jeremiah Rangel is strikingly comparable to The Mars Volta on "Night Alone", while I could've sworn "Burning Bridges" was an old Op Ivy song. Mest doesn't let the second half of the album drag the listener down, with the very original "200 Miles", the Postal Service keyboard intros of "Your Promise", and the Dashboard Confessional-like sob story of "Lost, Broken, and Confused".

Mest's self-titled release has been rumoured to be a concept album, much in the vein of Coheed and Cambria. The story is one of a boy and a girl, who apparantly shared some sort of relationship, and then broke it off. Emotions such as sadness, angst, and confusion run rampant. "Return To Self-Loathing" is the obvious lyrical standout, containing introspective lyrics of Bright Eyes-caliber.

Production wise, John Feldmann is back at the helm, and he may have churned out what may be this decade's "Clarity", with super-crisp guitar sound, and subtle yet booming drums. It is no doubt that this album will be on many Top 10 lists at the end of the year, and is far more diverse than anything Bad Religion has ever done.

Okay, so I apologize for the sarcasm. The point is......it's Mest. If you really like them, this release is a step up from "Destination Unknown", contains the same catchy harmonies, bouncy rhythms, and even features an appearance from punk icon Benji Madden from Good Charlotte. If you don't like them, it's the same 3 chords, predictable song structures, unoriginal lyrics, and even features an appearance from that ass-clown from Good Charlotte.

Bottom line: It's Mest. Do with that as you will.

I actually really like this album. it's good, as long as you know what it is. it isn't punk and it's not supposed to be punk.

i think you all spend way too much time focusing on music you hate rather than music you like. why are over here making fun of mest for being posers? go put on your bad religion album and just listen to that instead.

    problem solved.
it's not that hard to ignore the mainstream if you really hate it that much.

    My Score:

    Hmm. Mest...Hmm

Well, what this band can do is write good slow ballads.
I like the odd slow punk ballad and there have been some fantastic ones over the years. Mest are alright at doing these, Chelsea being one of the best. However, they are not the best at doing them. Far from it.

However, writing punk songs (which is 85% of the album) is not their strength. Infact, they suck at it. And although I like bands to branch out - Mest have done so poorly, using carribean music and samba stuff and punk to make some soul destroying music. And thus, their albums crash and burn in general.

I always thought that being 20 somehting year old men and farting out lame ass highschool love songs to the beat of "bouncy pop tunes" would be a little dorkier then enjoying sci-fi. Especially when it is as well written as CoCa's. You sound like you heard one song and made up a opinion. Bash shit like this all you want, but dont talk about bands that actually strive to do something different and succeed. All I know is, the song "Delirium Trigger" is worth more then every song this joke has ever written...and then some.

I have a feeling many people that use this site are somewhat of social outcasts who hate cocksuckers who judge them for their choice in style, music, whatever. People who just didn't fit in with the "cool" crowd for whatever reason. But the reason kids group together in social circles (the "jocks," "preps," "dorks," "punks," whatever) is for security in an insecure time in their lives (the teenage years).

But by judging and stereotyping the people who listen to bands like Mest and Good Charlotte, you make yourselves hypocrites and ignorantly prejudiced (not in a racial way, but prejudiced against people who don't like the same things as you). Isn't that just as bad as the people who were judging you for rocking out to whatever bands you listen to?

If you don't like the music, say so. Say why. If you don't like a person, say so, say why. But don't be just another simple-minded idiot who uses this site.

ps, this is probably going to hit home for a lot of people, and they're going to get defensive and bash me, so they're the easiest fools to spot

hmm, this album is a little too polished, they should ditch feldman, ever since the used i guess he thinks he must put strings in every song. its still good, but i think they've been on a steady decline since 'wasting time'. the songs just arent as catchy, and the jerimiah written songs straight up suck. if u don't like pop punk in the vein of mxpx, goldfinger and old greenday, stay the hell away from this album.its simplictic, but thats what makes mest great, not technical ability, but harmonies and hooks. catchy stuff, but i'm sure most people hate this band and would find it cheesy.

    My Score:

There is such a thing as too sarcastic. When you said "with the passion of Thursday," I seriously wanted to knife you.

As for the actual record, are the lyrics as bad as they were on the other one? It's hard to top the awfulness that was "Cadallic." If I may quoth a passage:

    "It's Friday night
    What's going on tonight
I'll see her later on tonight"

Seems like they misplaced the ol' rhyming dictionary for this song. Are there any songs like this on the new album, and give examples. I'm in the mood for laugh.

I couldn't tell if this review was sarcastic or not, but Mest should never be mentioned in the same breath as any of those bands. They're a bunch of ab-polishing, pretty boy jock mother fuckers who think NOFX are cool but obviously missed the point that bands like them and all the other bands who's names good charlotte have stitched to thier pants for cred are trying to put out there like the ideals of DIY. Shitty bands like mest are killing the scene by bringing in jocks and psudo-beach bunnies and overpopulating things like Warp with crooked mesh hats and wife beaters. Fuck mest. Fuck them up thier stupid asses. It's shitty Major Lable A&R assembled bands like them and Simple Plan who are able to fool mainstream America into forgetting the point to Steve Jones and John Lydon saying "fuck" on live television and into thinking that shit like "SK8er Boi" is so punk rock.
