Despite all the rumors circulating about how this album was going to be “Keasbey Nights 2”, anyone who merely wrote Streetlight Manifesto off to that fact has no idea what they are missing. “Keasbey Nights” was my original all-time ska album, but “Everything Goes Numb” has dethroned it. This album isn’t just “Keasbey Nights 2”; it blows “Keasbey Nights” out of existence. Please login or register to post comments. What are the benefits of having a Punknews.org account?
First off i really like this album. love this album! its so great. its really different from most of the ska-punk bands out there like LTJ and Big D. This shit is mad complex, and i dig. At the risk of sounding out of place on a punk site, this album has too much punk on it. Im a big fan of ska-punk, but it really just doesnt work with this band (that one punk song right in the middle of Keasbey Nights knocks the entire album down a rung or two). Every time I listen to this I cringe when the distorted gits come in, because the music is great besides that. I can only imagine how great this album with be if Tomas's distortion pedal was stolen with all that equiptment... Among the best ska albums released, Tomas Kalokney is a very talented singer and songwriter. Combined with a very talented group = musical goodness. This is way too overproduced. Get Keasbey first. loved this cd, listened to it a ton perfect 10 By far the best album purchase I've ever made. Here's to hoping that the next true Streetlight album will be even better. this is one of the best records EVER! This CD freakin rules, We Are The Few is one of the greatest songs in existence. Can't wait to here next album. Now, I love my Streetlight just like I love my old catch22, but come on. This definately sounds like keasbey nights 2.0. The problem is, the songs on the streetlight cd average almost 4 minutes for absolutely no reason. If they were around 2 this album would be as good or better than keasbey, but since the songs are so damn long for no particular reason, this effort is not as good. rocks... rocks... rocks... sat on my shelf until recently, and then blew me away. Hilarious, because their next album IS Keasby Nights v.2 i am so glad i checked these guys out.....i have a tendency to hate ska bands before i hear them, but these guys are awesome...i found myself singing along on the third listen....cant wait for another record Any news on a new Streetlight manifesto CD? I actually just heard this cd for the first time about 3 days after they played a show here, which I'm not kicking myself for not going because this is the best cd that I've heard in a while. Rarely do you get a whole cd with all amazing songs and no songs that you skip over. One of the best cds I own, coming from someone who listens to very little ska, never really heard Catch 22 before, and really only keeps a Lillingtons cd on repeat. Great cd. this seriously is my favorite ska cd ever, before it was link 80's - 17 reasons, but Streetlight Manifesto has proved themselves quite well, and I actually saw them live a couple of days ago and they KICKED ASS :) this is the greatest album ever made!!!!! these guys have so much talent that its not even funny!!!!! Saying that this album blows away Keasbey Nights is completely wrong. Absolutely wrong. That album was Catch 22's best undoubtedly, and in my opinion one of the best third wave ska albums ever released. This album doesn't even touch Keasbey Nights. Cincypunk.net Photos -- Live at Radio Down-- everything said in this article is exactly true its one of the most kick ass albums ive ever heard. not to mention streetlight is my favorite band. "a better place, a better time" and "Big Sleep" are the best songs ive ever heard. A Match and Some Gasoline cannot compare with Destruction by Definition or Battle Hymns. By far one of the best ska cd's to come out in along time. Defintely better than the new catch 22. I f you don't have it you should feel deprived. to the guy below me, I've had that SHJ USA album for 2 or 3 years now, and I still love it! I just bought the Streetlight Manifesto yesterday, and I can already tell that they have something really special here. Right now, I think that the "Everything Goes Numb" is better then "Songs from Suberbia," but I kinda think it's comparing apples and oranges. The Spring Heeled Jack album is more of a showcase of the best thing to come out of ska of the past. The Streetlight album is the new wave of ska. If this album doesn't save ska, I don't know what will i hear great things about this album, i totally love catch 22, i am cheap as hell, if you can tell me honest that this cd is better than Spring heeled jack usa's(best 3rd wave ska ever) Songs from suburbia i will buy this cd fucking amazing cd. get it if you don't have it DBD is one of my of favorite albums of all time, all i am saying is the new album sounds OK but it doesn't move me the way DBD and Battle Hymes did and still does. It has some heavy shit and some ska like stuff, but it lacks the blend of the two that made DBD kick so much ass. And the heavy stuff, in my opinion, doesn't compare to Battle Hymes either. Damn, am I the only one? Oh well, everyone ignore the kid that said the suicide machines album is bad. He is an idiot. The new CD is better than DBD. Fuck yes that quote is great. I love the Blue Meanies. How about we just add this album to the 3rd wave ska bunch ok? But that will never take away what the Blue Meanies said: 'We're not your usual ska whatever punk ska punk core ska whatever thing, so hope you didn't come to see it, we have a new term for our style of music', 'What is it?', 'Its called music', 'Thank you, thank you for coming to listen to music'. It's really simple: the music they play is ska-punk anonymous(since you didn't leave a name for me to address you as), P.P.S -- This is my score of the new suicide machines with the last two albums they released factored in. I listened to like 8 of the new suicide machine songs, and i was happy to see them attempt at their old sound of D by D and some of battle hymes, but that attempt fell quite a bit short. I listened to them for maybe one day, two tops -- album of the year? Was i missing something? P.S --- someone tell me what sounds so much like keasby nights. Other than the obvious fact the singer is the same and they both have horns and ska (oh shit i genrelized) riffs. I would say 3 maybe 4 songs sound like Keasby -- yeah this is a keasby follow up but i just don't think it sounds much like its predeccesor, but they both are amazing. Skafather-- I would not deny that this album has tons of ska in it. But classifing it soley as a "ska" album is an insult to the diversity of the album. As for ska elitest, i could care less what genre something is in, it gets to murky and confusing -- if you like it you like it, thats what i was telling folks without a clue, this album is great, simple as that. for everyone saying this album isn't ska or whatever the hell is going on: I'm amazed at how many people think horns = ska... Generally, what makes it ska is the guitars... Anywho, I have SxE friends who like this I got a few emo friends who like, and I got hardcore friends who like. I even have metal friends who like it. Ok, so I've labeled a lot of stuff, but it'd be dumb to label SM under ska... Its such a small word, for so much music. "For that matter if you are a fan of Keasby Nights I don't really think it sounds like that either" For anyone reading this who has no clue, this album doesn't sound very much like SKA, so don't write if off. In fact it doesn't sound too much like anything you have ever heard but I promise you will love it. For that matter if you are a fan of Keasby Nights I don't really think it sounds like that either, but trust me and all the other folks who reviewed. Amazing album. I hate ska, DAMMIT I NEED THIS CD!! The few songs I've heard are fucking awesome! my reply to everyone talking about complex music or if music has to be complex to be good. Music doesn't necessarilly have to be incredibly complex to be good... Someone can play a really complex trumpet solo, but I might not like it. Yeah, really, playing the bassline in an Avenged Sevenfold proves nothing...it's fairly simple. The guitar parts on the other hand will rack your fucking mind... Pick up a guitar and try to play avenged sevenfold. It won't just takes you days, it will take you years. Try Eternal Rest. thanks for answering my questions jamie. how'd your class like your new cd? i know i'd be really psyched if my band teacher was in streetlight manifesto, botar, and was in catch 22 for their good album. shit, i dont check the posts for a few days, and when i leave, jamie egan starts posting. just my luck. while everyones asking questions, i figure i should ask this, since ive been wondering this for a while. in the botar booklet, it says the sm album is the second out of the three keasbey nights chapters, whats the third one? could it be the thought scrapped man bites dog project? or will it be the next sm album? oh, and while were all arguing over how good this cd is in contrast to others, im gonna go out on a limb here, and say this is one of the best 3rd wave ska albums ive ever heard. James, Jon, NOFXPunkLTJ22 = Hmm, "Two of the cd's on there I've yet to hear, so it might change". Open up your eyes you fucking moron. ok seriously, i heard come avenged sevenfold song, and i picked up my bass and memorized it the same day. i don't even like avenged sevelfold. but seriously, try picking up a bass and learning any SM song. it'll take days at the least. which songs did you use the C trumpet on? i'm a fellow trombonist so i actually do understand what you're talking about when you talk about various types of trumpets and trombones. also, how was everything recorded and tracked? did you use dummy tracks for the songs? Been listening to this for a good month as I'm sure a good amount of you have, but I bought it the day it came out at best buy.... Jon, "idiotic thing" instead of idiot thing. Uh oh, moron alert. Tomas has to be one of the most talented songwriters of the past 10 years. i like bandits much much more and thought this was just a run of the mill ska record, im enjoying it however, so tits to streetlight. I just happen to enjoy the bandits dynamic, and mood much more as well as their musicianship. streetlight manifesto equals bandits of the acoustic revolutioin. i'd say it's pretty obvious hey jamie, Album of the year. hands down. Speaking of the acoustic bandits, anyone check out the latest news? Some extra stuff is on the way. Most likely it will be out-takes (as in the ones mentioned in the Call To Arms notes) but something new is something new. It's also very cool of them to work out a way so not to cheat out the people bought the EP into buying it again. Whoa..... "but no matter what anyone says I'll never stop working on projects like these" = Please do, your making amazing music :) To all of you who like this album I'd like to say thanks! For all of you who don't, but listen to it anyway and came up with an intelligent opinion, I also say thanks. I've worked on all these projects with C22, BOTAR, and SM. I've worked on all of them because I love the music and enjoy contributing to the sound. SM is special to me because I got to play trumpet as well as play trombone and sing harmony vocals. You can all debate what you like and why but no matter what anyone says I'll never stop working on projects like these. For those of you that wish I would, take heart, I'm old and could die any day. But when I die if you press your ear to the soil you'l notice that I'll still be humming from the grave. Hopefully they'll bury me with my trumpet and trombone as well. Yes i'm aware of that, calm down, but he said "pick up and instrument and try to play something", and as the fact that I play bass, I asked him to name a song, and I shall "pick up my bass and try to play the song". Calm yourself. hey, sometimes theres more to music then a fucking bassline. Granted, bass is nice, but sometimes a band likes to have more variety to there guitar playing then upstrokes and power chords. "Just because you don't understand a band, doesn't mean they don't have ability" = yaaaaa I'm not understanding "Dillinger(sp???) Escape Plan", and "Coheed..." but I'd be damned if I didn't think they "have ability". "Hmm, thats all well and good if Avenged Sevenfold has "songwriting ability", but it'd kinda help if they actually used the "ability"........." TJmoney = Holy shit man, I totally forgot about the Suicide Machines. Thats definitly tieing Rise Against for my 3rd spot. Sick cd. This and Strike Anywhere are the best releases so far this year. This is amazing!! Best CD of the year is Paint It Black so far. I like the new Suicide Machines CD...alot. I d/led the song "everything went numb" very very cool. I wanna hear more. Keasbey Nights is an awesome cd. LTJ's new cd is great, who cares what you say. Best CD of the year has to go to the Suicide Machines though. Hands down. The person 2 posts down = you speak the truth. Although I cannot see whats so special about Avenged Sevenfold, to each his own, I guess. What a petty argument. All the bands mentioned kick ass in there own specific ways. And also, not a single band you ave mentioned has made my "top 10 of the year" list, but im not bitchin. Calm down. Who cares. C22 - Okidoky... AMAZING ALBUM! I've been listening to it non-stop since I bought it the other night. Hmm, thats all well and good if Avenged Sevenfold has "songwriting ability", but it'd kinda help if they actually used the "ability"......... Oh yeah, Avenged Sevenfold has more songwriting ability than LTJ can wet dream about... I'm starting to think that this is a band member of LTJ...no one else would EVER consider that album the best of the year Your putting NOFX higher than LTJ? Like NOFX isn't "pop-punk at heart"? Wow, their new cd had 2, count 'em, 2 good songs on it, "Separation of Church and Skate", and "Idiots Are Taking Over". Last time I checked, a cd that makes the top 10 has more than just 2 good songs........ You people are dumb. First of all I don't think many of you realize that Tomas wrote all the BOTAR stuff as well as Streetlight. Second, LTJ?! I love the Jake, I have for years, but christ Anthem being a top album of the year is a fucking joke. Its pop-punk at heart with some horns and guitar upstrokes thrown in. Atrio, Rise Against, NOFX, Streetlight, Rancid, but certainly not LTJ. "3rd", not "3nd", and ya, i'm hopeing about the new Slackers cd. hey_sailor = Hahahaha you fucking moron. You may just be right about the Lawrence Arms cd, but since I havent heard it yet, I cant say much about it. But seriously, Mars Volta, and Avenged Sevenfold are shit. Your out of your goddamn mind, Mars Volta is just fucking annoying, and Avenged Sevenfold is just, as I said, shit. This is probably how it's going to play out... speaking of heres to life when the fuck is the bandits of the acoustic revolution going to put out the full lengths? im dying here. There are way too many good cd's this year for less than jake to even be remembered quincentuple your money is many people's favorite song, for a good reason too. personally, that and new noise are enough t' keep me kickin for a while. to be honest, i like Botar's version of Here's to life better. BUT! they are both great. And this Streetlight cd is really really good. i wonder how botar is gonna handle the streetlight manifesto covers. im not sure its possible, seeing how great of a song it is already, but im hoping they do something really great to a better place, a better time. im all for a violin lead in the breakdown about 2 and a half minutes into the song. my favorite songs are The new LTJ album is complete shit...and I was a LTJ fan. Get over it and realize that Lawrence Arms, Mars Volta, and Avenged Sevenfold have written much better albums. mumbleumbolous, I'm the guy who posted the Tomas quote and I TOTALLY agree with what you said. The songs MUST have evolved over the years, and I bet a few of them have even been just recently created, though some of them were definitely written back in the day. The previous post was by me hey_sailor = Ya i've heard the "quality music", and I think LTJ beats the shit out of it all, except this cd. So no, I'm 100% serious. I love this album but I hope that kid who said LTJ should be the top album of the year was joking. Have you heard the quality music that has come out this year? I'd say LTJ's new album is on the bottom 10 of the year... This CD is awesome, one of the best if not the best of this year. I agree with the previous poster that "A better place, a better time" is an outstanding song and best on the album. "A Better Place, A Better Time" = song of the year. Seriously, if I dont see this cd, and the ltj cd tied for 1st on all the best cd's of the year lists, I'm going to be one pissed kid. referring to the comment 3 posts below. i guess youre right to some extent about the keasbey nights pt. 2 thing, because i was listening to it again after i posted, and there are reoccuring themes happening throughout everything goes numb, that also occur in keasbey nights. however i think because its a seperate band, and the music has probably evolved over the years, i wouldnt consider it a direct "sequel" to keasbey nights. although it makes you think. its been years since tomas left c22, so the songs must have evolved in some way since then. i wonder what they sounded like originally. oh, one last thing. i find it funny that both former c22 singers sing on this album(jeff davidson singing gang vocals on egn). Christ, I love this album. It just.. rocks. Period. This is the best release of the year. i'm the guy below, here's the exact quote: possibly my favorite CD of the year. one of the best records of the year, second only to de-loused in the comatorium. yea, like the guy before said about the lyrics to point counterpoint, if you listen to keasbey nights(the song), right before point/counterpoint, they sort of meld together by the lyrics. its the closest to keasbey nights pt. 2 anywhere on the album. you know....the reason this sounds like catch 22 is because TOMAS WROTE ALL OF KEASBY NIGHTS. and it sounds better because he's gotten better as a song writer and more than likely he's working with very talented people. I broke down and bought this on my lunchbreak today. It made me feel 15 again. This cd is fucking orgasmic. This cd, and the new LTJ cd, are by far the best of the year. Oddly enough, a few parts of "That’ll Be The Day" remind me of Bad Religion, but whatever, it's still a sick song. And, ya, I'm loving the Na-Na-Na-Na-Na's. "you shouldn't give an album a perfect score if you dont like some of the tracks." To those who write this off as Keasbey 2, so the fuck what? That isn't enough for you? I've been waiting 3 years for this follow up and it pays off in every aspect. I still perfer the grittier feel to the Everything Went Numb demo, but i enjoy the new Here's To Life a lot. Their explaination for reprising it in the album notes is reson enough for me. I'm pretty damn happy because today I get paid so I can go get this. I've heard a little and it sounded great. Keasbey nights is one of my favorite ska albums and if this one is better then that it must be damn good. a decent album if you liked keasby nights. of course a 100 times better than any post-tomas catch 22 release. what's the deal with victory plugging them as 1/3 one cool guy? there's no ex ocg members and the only member i recognize is the saxophone player who used to be in the royalties (rob from midtown was drummer). This album is pretty good, hasn't quite grown on me the way I thought it would yet. Still is good, but not as good as Keasbey Nights. It's not the best album of the year, but probably in the top 10. Victory had better do some serious cocksucking for this band, cause its close to being all they have left. I was realy excited when i got this...but so far it is just not doing anything for me. All the songs just seem to blur into a frenzy of drumfills and similar sounding basslines with a different trumpet tune being played over it. And some of the singing is very irritating (like the constant na-na na-na-na's). Its not bad at all, but some parts irritate me and it could have used ALOT more variety. The only song that really sticks out alot is "A moment of silence". I dunno...Keasbey had so many more sounds and different tempos then this cd. I still like it better. Who knows...this might grow on me more, but for now Im disapointed. It just seems like Tomas overreached. you shouldn't give an album a perfect score if you dont like some of the tracks. yes it was begging to be said in the review that "point/counterpoint"'s theme is pretty similar to the title track of yesteryear...the lyrics are the type where you could read it and just hear in your head how tomas is singing it. i can't wait until this shows up in my mailbox Totally...this record is great. Had to review it me-self and gave it a glowing review, I might add. nice, Keasbey Nights is definately one of my favorite ska albums ever and i'm glad to hear that this one is good...can't wait to hear it to the person that said the lyrics are alot like the chorus to keasbey nights below me....that song,"point/counterpoint", is kindof like a sequel to the song keasbey nights. yah i liked this cd alot. and i completly agree that thomas is better in Streetlight Manifesto. For some reason this cd shows his talent alot more than anything he did with catch 22. the best victory relase of the year. haven't heard this song yet, but the lyrics mentioned in this review sound pretty damn similar to the chorus of "keasbey nights" (when they come for me i'll be sitting in my desk / with a gun in my hand wearing a bulletproof vest / singing my my my how the time does fly / when you know you're gonna die by the end of the night) chalk this band up on my short list of bands to check out along with throwrag. sounds like good stuff. |
