Chicago has yet another band to bring to the table. This band- Holden’s Catch, is a four piece rock/punk band originating in Orland Part Illinois. Recently, many of Chicago’s local bands from the suburbs have had a repetitive and formulaic pop punk sound such as Fall Out Boy, The Plain White T’s, Lucky Boys Confusion, and even Spitalfield’s new album. I am glad to say that Holden’s Catch is a band hailing from the suburbs that will not entice you with continuous power chords and clap along beats.

This 6 song EP is the first release for Holden’s Catch, and was put out by Ger Around Records. Recently, this band has toured with Tom Sawyer, and played alongside bands such as The Ghost, and Small Brown Bike. These bands are exactly how I would classify the sound of Holden’s Catch.

The vocals remind me of Hot Water Music, scratchy and almost hoarse. This sound adds to the expressiveness of their lyrics- that I found to be pretty impressive for a new young band with an average age of 19 or 20. Holden’s Catch is by no means a band set out to make generic lyrics about failed high school love affairs. Instead they uniquely describe relationships and their coming of age through expressions of anger, rage, and self-realization.

In all honesty, Holden’s Catch is not in a league of their own. They are not a new innovative sound, unlike anything you have heard before. In fact, their sound seems to blend in with many other rock/punk bands I have seen this summer at the Fireside. However, this band does illustrate superior lyrics, and is know to for their energetic live show. It is safe to say that Holden’s Catch is doing very well for themselves in a scene with so many similar sounding bands.

You fucking kids don't get it... you see... music is all about relating... relating your personal experiences with the experiences of the artist making the music. Everyone... everyone, you know... thinks it's so cool to like a band that no one's ever heard of, but the simple fucking fact is... is that the less a band is known the less they are able to relate to the fans... that or they have super bad promotion. so who the fuck cares if 5 or 500000000000 people like a band as long as you can relate to it in a personal way then fuck the naysayers.

    shut the fuck up

that being said, holdens catch is an amaing band, both live and on tape. this ep is great. be sure to check them out next time they hit the fireside.

first off, sickboi is a rubber
secondly, sickboi isn't at all creative, its just lame
thirdly, if lucky boys confusion isnt pop punk, then i guess that means the random heroes are a good band...

    "Maybe a Kevin Smith reference....?"

Well, Holden from Chasing Amy was named after Holden Caulfield anyway, so it's still referencing Salinger. I don't think that's a bad thing myself. I think "The Elevator Pimp" would be a good name for a punk band that's referencing Catcher in the Rye, but it has a more comical sound to it than Holden's Catch.

I feel that this comapact disc is by far one of the best I have ever heard. The lyrics and music are enticing. I couldn't ask for anything of better quality. I will definately attend a Holden's Catch performance, hopefully soon in a nearby concert hall. Also, I can't wait to tell my local record shoppe dealer to start carrying Holden's Catch LPs. The mere thought of this makes my knees quiver. In retrospect, hearing about Holden's Catch is probbably one of the best things that has ever come in my directions. That's ME, signing off.

Just curious, is the band name a "Catcher in the Rye" reference? I could have sworn the narrator in that book was named Holden.

Oh man, it's good to see these kids finally getting the attention they deserve. A killer cd that keeps you hooked the whole way through, much better than those cookie cutter pop punk bands that plague the radio. These guys dare to be different in a scene full of followers. Make sure you catch a Holden's Catch show, no doubt you'll be as impressed as I was.
