Review by: Adam See others by this writer Punk vs Emo (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on September 26th 2003 …and everyone loses! I’m not of the mindset that you can successfully represent an entire genre of music on an album, so I’m not too surprised that this compilation fails to deliver. The problem being that there are no more than a few really decent songs here for each genre. Even the involved bands that have solid track records (Down By Law, The Forgotten, The Queers, Snuff among others) don’t really contribute any seriously interesting tracks to Punk vs Emo. However aside from a few notable punk bands that may fit on this type of compilation, the majority of the tracks are really b-level stuff. Not to insult the bands involved, but none really stand out stylistically or creatively. This problem plagues the emo side as well, even though it features more rising bands like Further Seems Forever, Over It and Rufio. This compilation is plagued by a lack of focus, which is really the death knell for a concept album. Both sides feature bands that are far too close to crossing into the other style, making the divide between the two a lot less apparent and ultimately less engaging. Couple that with the fact that “emo” is poorly defined in general:. It’s a lazy catchall term used to refer to any number of styles that we formerly called pop-punk, indie rock and post-hardcore. Collecting it in this way just proves how easily the definition falls apart. Of course I’m judging this compilation solely based on the fact that
it doesn’t live up to its title. However everything about this is meant to foster a debate, particulary the website where you vote for the best tracks on each side. For something that's supposed to get the pop-punk kids talking, this may do nothing more than put them to sleep. If your in dire need of a really competent “Punk vs Emo”
compilation you could just hot glue the jewel cases from BYO’s Sample This Too! and Deep Elm’s Emo
Diaries 1 together for better results.

Emo sucks so much !! emo and punk are not alike at all... !!! theyr opposites and whoever makes them look alike sucks i like the album cause it proves emo kiks punks ass get emotions mothr fuckrs Fucking emo kids and their goddamn pussy attitudes, QUIT TAKING FEMALE HORMONES YOU FUCKING PUSSIES! punk = a kind of "lifestyle" with ideas behind it this CD is so bad that it's brilliant. i would say it a bad joke but i'm laughing too hard. My vote for album of the year!! Why in the hell do we even mention punk and emo in the same sentence. I am so sick of this emo shit I want to beat the next person I hear playing this shit over the head with their acoustic. Stop fucking crying you pussies. damn that guy looks like he fell asleep with the micraphone in his hand, punk vs emo.....damn why don't they just fight and kill each other. Or better yet have the singer of emo bands take on the singers to punk or hardcore bands in street fights.....give the emo kids something to cry about when they see their favorite emo singer get the shit beat out of them i might buy this just for the cover. frame it perhaps. here's betting that this review makes the top ten most read cause everybody comes here to laugh at the cd cover. oh my God, this cover gets funnier and funnier everytime I look at it. You know that saying "dont judge a book by a cover"? "photoshop? c'mon guys, don't give em too much credit. MS Paint." oh yea. but this comp is crap. and the cover is ridiculous. but the idea, couldve been good. maybe, it was supposed to have bands that blur the lines crossing into the other category and showing there are no genres or subgenres and that music is exactly that, music. and we are all one and equal. What I've learned from the album cover photoshop? c'mon guys, don't give em too much credit. MS Paint. Whenever I'm feeling down, I figure all I really need to do is take a look at the album cover for a quick laugh! no really. that cover is a pile. 'I'm on my way to buy it now! "this looks like the worst put together comp ever, that cover looks like crap, and everyone knows that anyone that listens to emo should just cut to the end of the story and kill themselves" hahaha, stupid album cover "also emo is usually best done when the singer has no singing voice so it sounds rough and bad" i got this in the mail for free. it came in a plastic bag, no shit Maybe it was really just a commentary on how closely related the two genres have become as they've grown older. They may be trying to show the "scenes", so to speak, how they are drifting towards each other in content and style. Or maybe it just sucks. "Man, the "emo" guy looks like a drunk fratboy doing karaoke" Ha ha, well said! Great review I'm on my way to buy it now! this score is for the chick because she looks hot. Man, the "emo" guy looks like a drunk fratboy doing karaoke. what down by law and forgotten songs are on here? who else is on the punk rock wall of shame? I have to get a poster of that cover for my Punk Rock Wall Of Shame!! emo bands don't even make good sad/love songs, the best ones are made by bands that don't normally write that stuff the punk side represents a belvedere song...that's enough to make this thing good...but just buy the belvedere split instead...rock With that cover art they could have at least named this mofo: "Trying our damnedest to kill both punk and emo" and confirmed what everyone thought. Why even have a comp like this? This is the problem with music today...TOO MANY FUCKING LABLES!!! There is emo, punk, hardcore, pop-punk, screamo, emo-core...the list goes on and on. There is no such thing as emo anyways. Emo stands for emotional. All music is emotional not just heartbreak. music is emo even if it has happiness, sadness, anger, or anything like that. punk is what you make it. punk is punk. if a band is making music for their fans and the music they want to make they are punk even if they are making money doing it. This accurately represents the "punk" and emo scenes rather well. They are just fakey trends that kids pass through because everyone else is doing it. I am going off of nothing but the cover here, but I think this would probably be quality entertainment. Unless, that is, you actually are an emoron or something, then you would probably take offense to being depicted so thoroughly. Caio! This review gets my award for making me laugh the fastest Hey Adam, can you send me the cd booklet in the mail? I can't get over how hilarious it is. Seriously, I spit phlegm all over my keyboard the first time I clicked on the review because it was so unbelievable and I was laughing so hard. I want to put it on my wall. The fucking cover is ridiculous. The word "emo" is in a futuristic font straight out of an 80s movie. The guy on the cover represents emo? It looks like it was pasted together by a little kid. -Jay Recordings: No, the forgotten are included in the "few notable punk bands that may fit on this type of compilation." Although there are much better Forgotten songs in my opinion. The emo bands arne't emo and most of the punk bands suck. i hope you werent including the forgotten when you said that the bands were too similar to the other side, etc. yikes. what down by law song is on this:? Hahahaha...I love the cover! It's so cheesy that it deserves a 10! The only problem with all of this is that this label putting out the disc seem to be capitalizing both word Punk and Emo! Where's the irony? Anyone? Wow, that goes down as quite possibly the worst CD cover of all time! its real cover..Ive seen in record stores....And I have to agree the word emo is too general..and way overused That cover can't be real. That looks like something in the 2.99 shelf at a truckstop next to the register. this looks like the worst put together comp ever, that cover looks like crap, and everyone knows that anyone that listens to emo should just cut to the end of the story and kill themselves "That's it. Scene's dead. Go home." Yeah, I thought the same exact thing when I looked at the tracklisting long ago. "This band is kind of emo...emo pop-punk anyway, but..." The band listing is confusing, it's true, they're really not separated in a given fashion like the title presumes. "there's a fine line between clever and stupid" that review was pretty funny. tee hee. That fight was bullshit and everyone knows it, I wish Foreman would have kicked Larry Merchant's ass too. score is for the first three words of the review. a big disappointment just like the mosely/de la hoya fight. That's it. Scene's dead. Go home. |
