Sure, lots of bands sing about killing girls. How many of them make it their entire theme?
While Boys Night Out have gone and flicked the pop switch on us from the Broken Bones and Bloody Kisses EP, there’s something about it that seems blatant and varied from the typified sound; it doesn’t circumstantiate Senses Fail or Finch comparisons. The band manages to narrowly avoid the ‘screamo’ label yet again, just enough where the music is more along the lines of pop-punk with a slight hardcore influence. With “I Got Punched in the Nose for Sticking My Face in Other People’s Business,” the opening dual screaming and pick slide is immediately followed by the poppy vocals and basic chords; it’s like a joke, but it works. In the song, the band actually pulls a role reversal, speaking from the victim’s point-of-view, to the proprietor of the crime. They also have the “sing-along, clap-along” part of the song (think the end of “The Only Honest Lovesong”); “drag my corpse through the cities I never got to visit / promise don’t let me miss it.” One irritating thing was in the slower track, “Hold On Tightly, Let Go Lightly.” There is a severe pause between the bridge and the breakdown, making you think the track ended. But then, at 2:09, the song starts up again, exactly like it first begins, with only a slight difference, a wind-type instrument playing quietly in the background. I thought the media player was on repeat, but much akin to their consistently vengeful plots, the band deceived me! Bastards! Although the album as a whole is slightly better than its predeceasing, er, preceding release, there are interesting things to compare and contrast. Little things like the hook before the chorus in “Where We Breathe” was never really fully replicated anywhere on the full-length. They still have several repetitious lines in the vein of actual hardcore here like the first disc, but the band apparently felt the need to increase the amount of writing in each song; sort of stretching out the beforehand plotting. And while the entire mood of the EP was dark, plodding, and surreal, establishing a haunting mood where you felt like you’re right at the murder scene, only a song or two here really sets up a similar setting. One such song here was the schizophrenic “Yeah, No...I Know.” It begins with appropriately post-traumatic, vocal distortion, and sags along its assembly line with dragging chord-striking and pleading dual vocals, backing the beg of “someone call an ambulance...” Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good song, but the mood swing starts to sway three minutes in, when the emotion seems to uplift for a moment, until two more minutes later when the pleads return, finishing the song against a wall of off-key, purposely sloppy string-picking. Much like the Rx Bandits did with The Resignation, the liner notes are a much different material from basic paper. Here it is a type of glossy paper, the clever idea back-dropping the bodies on ice photos. Many are going to see this as a turn for the worse. Others are going to take it with a grain of salt and still be able to enjoy the music and lyrics. And still, the others will continue disliking Boys Night Out. Could they be your thing? Still by far my favorite album from these guys. you know, i never woulda thought i'd say this back in 03, but over the years this album has just held up so well, especially as the genre bastardized and cannibalized itself. without a doubt, this is in my top 25 best album of this decade. an underrated masterpiece. Damn, this record still rocks! oh yeah i forgot i liked this more because it was a good cd to listen to if you got out of a bad relationship with a gf. Makes you wanna bash their brains in. like said in the movie the Shining = ] This is when i liked Boys Night Out too the fullest. The songs were fun and catchy as well like Just once and I punched in the face... But their new stuff ius okay. I'm sure if some of you didn't read these comments, forgot about catagories and just gave it an honest listen you might be suprised. funniest thing ever: i was walking back to my house from class today and there was a "make yourself sick" promo postcard on the sidewalk, and right on top of it was a huge pile of dog crap. it was hilarious. Any band that quotes from "The Wedding Singer" gets 5 stars in my book. the more i listen to this, the more i like it. they add an edginess to pop punk that keeps the sap away. this band is quite the suck, but the review was pretty well written. props on english skills "This a great cd.fuck you to they guy who called it fashioncore. I have never heard this band before but based on what I have read I am gonna say that I think they suck. The Killing Tree mentions killing the ladies quite often. I prefer Mike Kinsella. He is my favorite musician/songwriter ever. tim kinsella is master of most literary devices. hoot hoot, give me another god-damn cd. there old stuff did sound kinda like grade, but grade fuckin rule, best band ever. only one person can successfully pull off alliteration, and that is tim kinsella. did anyone notice that on their mp3.com page, they listed themselves as "killcore" that is one of the better cores i've heard, not as good as sasscore or corecore but better than postcore. Their tour manager's a pretty cool guy too, met him at the Thursday show last week. this is lame...... how fucking cool would it be to see boy's night out fight my chemical romance for the twisted-as-fuck-pop-punk crown? best concept band ever. There is only one band in the world that could ever make music about killing women fun and cool: cough fashioncore cough I really, really, really loved the EP. This album sounds kind of lame...I hope I'm not let down. this album is so different from the ep, but i love it none the less. its not so much "they changed their sound" they're growing as a band. this is based entirely on the album's concept. what kind of fucked up misogynist writes something like this? This album fucking sucks. I love BNO so much and have for a few years. But, i love their old stuff so much. If you have heard their you are my canvas demo and broken bones and bloody kisses ep then you know how much their sound has changed. I mean, some of the songs are on this album are OK, but there are a few that make me want to smack the taste of connors mouth for coming up with them. one of the best reviews i have read in a while, good job dude. also this album owns and this bands owns so put two and two together and you get an owned experience. i thought it was a let down from their EP Poppy music about killing girls. I dont see how this formula could get old. This album is pretty good. Ferret has a pretty good roster these days, Boys Night Out are right up there on that list |
