Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

“I’ve been waiting a long time to do this, just for New York.” Dan Andriano said that right before he broke into an amazing solo rendition of Enjoy Your Day, a song rarely ever played live, but I’ll get back to that later.

Since it was a Vagrant tour, of course there would be many bands. No Motiv was first up, and played only about 5 songs before going away, they weren’t bad, but nobody was on the floor listening. From Autumn to Ashes came on and so did the pits. Halfway through the second song there was already a fight, which security had to break up. Reggie and The Full Effect was next and did a great cover of the Slayer song “Raining Blood”

Then came the band that most people were waiting for, Alkaline Trio. With an amazing backdrop of their heart skull logo on the horizon of a graveyard, and a coffin on each side of the drum set, their had the most visual setup of the night.

Everything was calm until Matt Skiba walked on stage, everybody in the room pushed to the front as Derek and Dan were joining him. As they always do, they opened up with “This Could Be Love”, in which everyone was chanting out the steps in which Matt Skiba envisions his own death. Without any break between the songs, “We’ve Had Enough” was next, lead by some spectacular drumming from Derek Grant, the newest member of the trio. As if playing two consecutive tracks from Good Mourning wasn’t enough, “100 Stories” was the next song, and the first time Dan Andriano got to the microphone that night. It looked as if Alkaline Trio was going to play songs only from their Vagrant releases when Matt Skiba dedicated the next song to everyone who owned Maybe I’ll Catch Fire.

As they broke into “Keep Em Coming”, everyone in the crowd who knew the song went crazy, singing along with every word. Next up was the title track off of the very same cd, “Maybe I’ll Catch Fire”. Since they played 3 songs in a row from Good Mourning, why not 3 in a row from Maybe I’ll Catch Fire. Skiba dedicated “5-3-10-4” to anyone who was a bike messenger.

The next song was a song never played live until this tour, “Trucks and Trains”. Skiba even gave a little respect to NYC by changing the lyrics “…the west coast shore” to “…the east coast shore” in what was one of the best songs of the night. “Crawl” was next, in which Skiba sang as much as Adriano did, adding some depth to the song. The next song is one that is normally not played halfway through a show, but a request from the front got it. The intro to “Radio” got every single person in the crowd on their feet, singing so loud that even in the front you could hardly hear Skiba at all. Dan added in some bass to the intro, making the song even more amazing.

Matt Skiba dedicated “Queen of Pain” to New York. Quickly following was another old song of the trio’s, “This is Getting Over You”. As Derek and Matt walked off stage, it appeared that it would be over. Then Dan emerged from the side of the stage with a guitar in hand. Just the site of that made people know they were in for a treat, as that is something rarely seen. As he stood in front of the mic, he said he had waited a long time to do this, and wanted to do it in New York. The crowd went quiet as Dan went into the intro of “Enjoy Your Day”, and then softly sang along until the very end, in which Dan received an amazing applause, and his band mates came back on stage.

Since it’s a Vagrant tour, of course more new stuff was coming, and “Continental” came next, another great sing along. The second song of the night off of Goddamnit, “Message from Kathlene” was next. Matt approached the mic and said the next song would be their last. “All on Black”, the next single, was the last song, which the crowd sung along to just as they had to all the rest. The trio walked off stage, but not for long. There were chants for many songs, but finally the crowd started chanting “one last song”, and Matt Skiba walked back on, minus the suit and tie he had worn all night, now only clad in a short sleeve shirt and his black pants. Slowly he started playing “Blue in The Face” as he stood on stage by himself. Midway through the song, Derek and Dan came back and manned their instruments, joining him to finish the song full band.

The crowd had sung along all night, and the trio knew it, as they stopped playing just in time for the crowd to scream “Your coffin or mine?” to end the night.

The night started off with many new songs, but the Alkaline Trio went into an old song overdrive. Playing songs rarely or never played before such as 5-3-10-4, Keep Em Coming, Trucks and Trains, Message From Kathlene, This is Getting Over You, and of course, Enjoy Your Day.

All in all, it was a great place to be, as every second was thoroughly enjoyed.

A friend of mine claims they just signed to a major label. But that is kind of hard to believe since they are currently doing the Vagrant Tour.

Credit for what? Slowly dismantling any credibility they had at one time? They sure are doing a good job at that.

Ok, so that there Trio has a 2nd guitarist around to punch out the leads, that is a little disappointing, but it is not the first nor will it be the last time a band has a backup like that, again disappointing that it was these guys. And as for complaining about the set-list...shut up and like it, yeah, there were a couple of songs that I would have liked to hear, but they weren't there, oh fucking well and if they had come out and played the enitre Good Mourning album, I would have walked away a little disappointed, but happy. Leave them the fuck alone, or at least give some credit where it is due!!!!

I just love how people just read the review to be able to post comments like "Alk 3's second best song is not Radio you fucking moron. Especially when the writer never even said that. So stop complaining about the horrible reviews until you learn how to read. If you still think they suck write your own you fuckin hack.

Of course not everyone will be happy with this set, cos Alk3 have just too many good songs. Who cares, they're trying to promote a new(ish) album, hence the set is gonna be top heavy with goood Mourning tracks.

MIA-Madame Me, Tuck Me in, Bleeder, Trouble Breathing, Nose Over tail, I lied My Face Off, 97, Goodbye Forever, My friend peter, Stupid Kid, Private Eye, My Little Needle, Clavicle etc.

This band could play 20 completely different songs and people would still be satisfied

Did they introduce their 'helper' at this show?

By helper I mean the guy who plays lead guitars but stands behind the cabs and pretends not to exist most of the time.

Anyone remember seeing the Blues Traveler video??

Ummm I do know what im talking about, it's my opinion, and I think good mourning is an incredibly boring albumn. Especialy when compared with their other stuff. But even if there other stuff wasn't good, Good Mourning was NOT a good record.

i haven't seen a "punk" band play with less energy and enthusiasm in my entire life. alkaline trio simply showed up, played a by-the-numbers show, and counted the money. and the second guitar player visible behind the stage? what a joke. A3 needs to go back to the garage and not come back out until they can hack it live. AND to see such a sorry excuse for a show on the day one of the better live bands, face to face, announces their retirement...what a downer

    My Score:

I've seen them three times and I gotta say that the last time (in september) was by far the worst. I've only ever seen them since "From here..." came out so they've always played stuff off that cd but the first two times I saw 'em they only played about 5 songs off it and the rest was really old stuff so i was quite excited to hear songs from good mourning live. Unfortunately, some of them are shown up for being quite derivative. The Trio still rock though and anyone who says their new album is just shit really has no clue what they're talking about. It's a good album, just not as great as anything else they've done (and yes, From here To infirmary is a great album, just a little more commercial.) Soup!

i think the setlist is kinda cool.. i would go into it accepting theyre gonna play a shitty setlist, and be pleasantly suprised by the cool songs they do play, i mean if they play Keep Em Coming, 5-3-10-4, Trucks and Trains, Enjoy Your Day, or Message From Kathlene(especially)... i think its cool theyre playing underplayed songs, i read somewhere that derek had them relearn a bunch of them... pardon me for saying this, but who needs to hear 97 again? now if we could only get them not to play those first 3...

Thier first album, "From Here to Infermary," is so gooood. Why don't they play Stupid Kid more?

Does Matt Skiba have a nose ring?

They don't have a second guitar player, that's why they're called Alkaline TRIO.

I agree, I want to see them start playing Youve got so far to go, sleepyhead, she took him to the lake, as you were, southern rock, You're Dead, Bleeder, Bloodied Up, Dead End road, sundials.

really, i dont want to see Queen of pain, crawl, or maybe ill catch fire played again for a while... not that they are bad songs, just want some other stuff besides the common favorites.

But, it wasnt a totaly bad show, songs like Message from kathlene, enjoy your day, keep em coming, 5-3-10-4, trucks and trains, and this is getting over you made it completley worthwhile.

Hopefully next time they tour they will stop playing so much off of Good Mourning, which I really dislike...

    My Score:

I went to this show. I was excited to see the Alkaline Trio but I was really unhappy with their set list. As an old fan of the band I was not so pleased with the set list especially since I don't really like the new album at all. I also was shocked that they did not close with 97. I have seen them about seven times and every time except this time they closed with 97. I was just shocked. I hope they remain true to their more diehard fans and play more old songs. Not that I don't recognize that a band has to play some songs off their newest release but try not to play the old album and try not to compromise a live show tradition in doing so

    My Score:

I was at this show. Other than Dans acoustic song, the rest of the set was terrible. The worst set ive ever seen them play. And now they have a fill in 2nd guitarist because Matt is too coked out to play the songs right. Reggie saved this night from being a total waste of money. Highlights from Reggie included a dance off w/ break dancing and some kid doing a running man.

I was at this show, and I have to say it was an alright show. I really enjoyed FATA and reggie, especialy when they played Dwarf Invasion.

5-3-10-4 was my favorite of the night. I also saw pete from the bouncing souls there which as cool.

This is my third time seeing Trio, and they are amazing... my only complaint is a lot of similar songs from the last time i saw them, and the same 3 song opener.
